Why? It was known as the Wuhan virus in the mainstream media until Chris Hayes a week ago or so ago decided that calling it that was racist. It's not.

The prohibition against saying "the Wuhan virus" bears remarkable similarity to the jihad against the Betsy Ross flag, which Obama proudly displayed at his 2012 inauguration, but suddenly became "racist" after Colin Kaepernick ignorantly declared it so on Twitter.

Enough with the Woke bullshiit. I've been calling this new infliction generically coronavirus but if this nonsense persists I will start calling it the Wuhan virus as a big middle finger to the fascists who want to stomp out free expression in this country.

Countries who are managing this correctly, Most of Asia due to past epidemics like SARS and H1N1 shut things down and the spread stops.

The US is not in a very good position, not just because there is not enough tests kits (read "samples") out and available but there is incapacity in the test analysis side (checking to see if "samples" are positive/negative) so even if we could test everyone we want, we still can't process quickly enough to locate and isolate areas likely to trigger quick outbreaks.

Assuming everyone has it and then just lock down and wait out the virus lifetime (14-20 days?), while seemingly painful, is better than what will happen if we just act like "only they have it".

Unless your entire existence is off the grid, you depend on people you don't know who live where it can spread.

Missing out on entertainment will be the least of our worries. :(

And just so we understand why everyone has lost their collective minds. Our national healthcare system is evidently incapable of handling a small spike in coronavirus cases. So we need to spread out the inevitable. Check out the chart in the New York Times.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/11/science/coronavirus-curve-mitigation-infection.html

What they aren't saying is that if our healthcare gurus had f*cking planned for a predictable pandemic (not if, but when) over the past century the "health care system capacity" flat-line in the graphic would be raised, and even the red bulge of a spike would be below it. But they didn't plan, and as a society we're left with our collective pants down. Because our expert overlords are incompetent. And that's without mentioning that we stupidly outsourced our medical supply logistics to China.

But let's debate what to call this debacle.

COVID-19 is short, to the point since the common cold is also a coronavirus and it is NOT the flu.

They call it "Novel" because its form is a deviation from the other known coronaviruses.

Yes, I'll have to find the report my wife showed me this morning. Though we hear about how bad it is in China, it's not really that bad because their confirmed case growth flattened out as Italy & Iran growth rates blew by.

Basically, China, South Korea, Singapore & Taiwan look like that blue growth curve, while Italy, Iran and probably anyone else who's not locking down now, look like that orange growth curve

Our local governments are now running things... That gives me hope.

And they’ll raise prices to partially cover lost revenue from this season.

For sure. And Fisher will be tightening the purse strings even tighter. Expect to see us drafting from the local high schools.

Wonder what our sponsor InterMedia is thinking now. They signed up to sponsor a team not showing well in games and now the team won't be playing for a while.

. . . Are sports necessary? Strictly speaking, no. But in that sense, much of what makes life worth living is not strictly necessary. We face the possibility that a lot of people will be spending a lot more time at home in the coming months, their interactions with their fellow man reduced. Baseball went on during Reconstruction, the First World War, the Spanish Flu pandemic, the Great Depression, the Second World War, the 1989 Bay Area earthquake that interrupted the Giants-A’s World Series, and the aftermath of 9/11. In each case, there were a few interruptions, but both the nation’s leaders and the lords of the game recognized that sports serve a real social purpose as part of our public life . . .

Bummer for Quakes youth. Generation Adidas Cup and the new Developmental Academy Cup have both been cancelled. U17s and U15 boys are out of luck.

I appeared at a case management conference by "Court Call" earlier this week. (Not allowed to do so by cell phone, though.) The same case will have an in-person mediation next week. You cannot telecommute for everything. And the judiciary has yet to "suspend" litigation.

It seems like the death rate is highly impacted by the availability of medical care. Left unchecked, the virus spreads so quickly it overwhelms even the most advanced nations medical facilities. Then every case is a triage, who does the doctor treat and survive and who is left to die.

If the contagion spreads slowly enough, the existing health care system is able to mend the folks who have it, except for the unlucky ones with prior issues. That is why quarantines and social distancing are crucial to a low death rate.

I'm beginning to think that the right strategy is to seek out and and expose yourself now, while there are still hospital beds!

There is a long history of naming contagious diseases from their (apparent) source location.

    Spanish Flu, Zika, etc..

Calling it a recrimination is assigning bad intent where there is none.
