Got my first email (from Legends FC) that a youth event is canceled. Several colleges now closing or going to all-on-line classes now or after Spring Break. I'm pretty sure that kills the spring college soccer season, at least for a few weeks. Maybe Spring sports seasons altogether. Let's hope European soccer leagues keep running so we have something to watch at home! NCAA Basketball Tournament decision will be interesting.
I just posted in the uswnt pages on the questionable status of the upcoming US v Brazil game in San Jose. Likely to be cancelled or moved b cause SAnta Clara has a ban on public gayherings
I'm guessing Legends was cancelled because it's right next to Corona, California? Surely the central hub of the virus
Won’t be the last. We are getting similar info out East that events will most likely be cancelled in coming days
The Ivy League has just announced the spring season for all sports is cancelled. Will the Princeton women's basketball and Yale men's basketball teams be allowed to play in the Big Dance
Holy Shite - Tom Hanks has coronavirus! NCAA basketball games will be in empty arenas and the NBA season is suspended. Players from the NBA and Juventus testing positive. Schools closing, seasons getting canceled. Italy is closed - the country of Italy. In the State where I work, only 100 people have been tested. We need maybe a million before we really know who has this thing. Going to be a crazy year folks.
And, the US is closed to people coming from Europe (but not Great Britain and not for US residents coming from Europe except they'll have as yet undefined procedures to go through) for 30 days, starting Friday. But not yet Chinese or South Koreans ....
What are these tournaments waiting for to pull the plug? The NBA has suspended their season but Jefferson Cup in Richmond Va is still on. The ECNL has an event in Phoenix in less than a month that is still on. Come on league and tournament directors be pro active. Don't wait too long
Why do they need to cancel a tournament that is a month away. Travel plans have already been made. They can cancel it in two or three weeks with the same result. I would play wait and see, too.
I live in a city in which no one has the virus, as far as is known, and I think that's the case in a lot of places. I think there is one case in my state. Should two college teams with no issues cancel a spring game on the off chance that someone might catch a virus from another player? I fully get that precautions must be taken--but does that mean shutting down everything everywhere for a time? Not having big crowds, I get, but I'm not sure that spring seasons need to be canceled.
And, how does that affect what I said? I said there is no need to cancel today (if the event is a month away), when they can evaluate over the next couple weeks, and make more thorough decisions. The end result is the same.
Here in Italy we were in a similar full denial-mode until 2-3 weeks ago, with just a handful of "official" cases in the country and the general opinion that they weren't enough to justify draconian measures. Now we are at the lockdown of a whole nation: given the way the disease is spreading, I suggest that no precaution is too much to try to slow it down.
The whole idea of flattening the curve is about avoiding or at least minimizing the spike of patients that overwhelm our healthcare system past the point of volume they can handle. As the previous poster said, look no further than Italy to see what happens by waiting and seeing.
Did you actually read what I wrote? I am all for them cancelling it. But there are logistical issues they can sort out before making a rushed announcement. For example hotels? Do teams get a refund on their hotels? Possibly moving it to another date down the road. The event is one month away. Let them make an informed decision and send out an informative release to the clubs.
Not sure I am the one with a reading comprehension problem, but I get your point. Don't agree with it, but I get it.
NCAA has canceled winter sports championships. The NCAA suspended spring sports, as well as canceling all championships.
Yes you are. You addressed an issue to me that was not relevant to my post. And, to further my point, ECNL announced a suspension of the season today (so did DA). Now parents, coaches, clubs want to know who is eating the costs (ECNL, parents, clubs, coaches)? How is the season going to be handled for playoffs (if there is a playoff). So many more questions. As of now there are no answers. That was the entire point of my original post.
Taking precautions to avoid a potential health crisis is more important than you, me, or anyone else not having answers about airfare, club fees, hotel fees getting refunded or not getting refunded. Does it suck? Yep it sure does. Does it suck more than ending up in a situation like what is facing Italy? Nope it sure doesn’t. You need to take a few steps back and look at the big picture. I am sure we will get some or all of our money back in the end. Waiting another week or two until all of those question have answers to make decisions to cancel would be irresponsible. I think they made the prudent decision to cancel these events now before things got out of hand. THAT is my point.
You need to learn how to read. I never said they should not cancel it. I said they should gather the information they needed so they had the answers to questions when they did announce it. Since the event was ONE MONTH away they had time to gather that information. Nothing changes by waiting two weeks to announce it. No one was traveling for a month. Keep twisting in the wind. Now that they are canceling league matches for the months of March and April they no longer had time. There were games scheduled this weekend. They had to get it out. Reading comprehension is an important skill. So is putting your ego aside and admitting you were wrong. Now let's both leave this thread to the others. They don't deserve this juvenile back and forth.
