Not sure it matters, but no, being born in England didn't give him citizenship and he could only sign for Dortmund due to his Portuguese passport.
Nothing to do with the thread but I’m not sure about England. Just because you are born in Europe, unlike the USA , you don’t become an automatic citizen. Mario Balotelli was born in Palermo but he couldn’t compete in the Olympic because he wasn’t a citizen until his 18th birthday. He missed it by 3 weeks. I think you still have to wait to get your citizenship papers in many European other countries as well. He may have been able to obtain it through his father with Jus sanguinis.... Per wiki that is a principle of nationality law by which citizenship is determined or acquired by the nationality or ethnicity of one or both parents.
You are correct that the UK doesn't have full birthright citizenship, but my understanding is that it did give it to children born there with at least one EU citizen parent, for children born while the UK was in the EU. If I'm correct, which I may not be, it would apply in the Reyna situation due to Claudio's Portuguese dual citizenship. Anyway, Cade Cowell . . .
Interesting that Cade made it onto the field ahead of Fierro. I hope Cade's minutes were more due to his improvement as a player, (he did ok on Saturday) rather than Fierro's apparent inability to impress Almeyda enough to play ahead of him. Was hoping the Quakes would try hitting the ball over the top for him to take advantage of his pace.
He's only 16.And he really did this in his debut. 😳 pic.twitter.com/di3moE1VRV— San Jose Earthquakes (@SJEarthquakes) March 9, 2020
Positive start for him in his first game. Rough around the edges, but generally made good decisions and physically was able to compete. Nothing against him, but I agree that it's not a good sign that we had a 16 year old playing for us (unless he is the second coming of Messi or Ronaldo).
Down 4-1 at half is a no pressure situation to throw a 16 year old into -- Almeyda probably told him to try and make something happen and not worry about making mistakes. I wouldn't say that necessarily means he's above Fierro in the pecking order, but for me: if we are gonna suck, I'd rather suck with JT, Cade and Gilbert playing.
And with the freedom to try ****. The surging run up the middle was a beauty. His head was up, I know he was looking to pass but his only real option was to keep pushing forward until he ran out of space. If he could have wrapped his foot a little more around the cross that would have been a special goal.
Last night against the LA Galaxy, Cade Cowell age 16 and from the Ballistic United SC in Pleasanton, California , became the youngest player ever to score a goal for the San Jose Earthquakes!
Anyone have thoughts on Cade's ceiling? For just being 2 months shy of 17, showing promise out there amongst grizzled veterans. Can he go higher, or is MLS (Quakes) it for him? National team?
He had the physical skills and appears mental toughness to compete at this level. The biggest hurdle in my mind is consistency. If he can show that, I can see National Team and potentially a move abroad or the Galaxy.
My two cents, I believe he has the potential to reach the larger nats 30 player roster if he is groomed as a target forward. He is fast and strong, but he'll need to make the right decisions and mentally play fast to succeed at the nats level. He's still young, but there are players already on the nats (Pulisic, Reyna) who are or were much further along at 17 with respect to vision, passing tempo and soccer IQ...but they are not target forward options, they can play drop forward or flank or acm. Our current target forward options are not overly impressive. I've never been a Jozy fan,he'll age out soon anyway. The closet player we have as far as skill and decent size is Sargent, but he really isn't a classic target forward. We have a dirth of options at target forward, so Cowell potentially plays a position the nats sorely need. It will be interesting to see how much more he physically develops. Can he still improve his speed or add height. Seems crazy, but he can already hold his own against MLS level CBs at 16. He has a great coach, who understands what it takes to succeed at the international level. Almeyda will get him on the right path and show him what he needs to improve. I guess the bottom line is, Yes, he can make the nats as a target forward if he develops the mental side of the game and can combo at a higher tempo. I can almost guarantee the goal he scored put him on GB's radar, if he wasn't already on it for future consideration.
Cade Cowell getting some attention At 16, Cade Cowell became the youngest player to start an MLS game for the San Jose Earthquakes. And in the game’s 59th minute, he curled in a 20-yard blast to give his team a brief lead and become the youngest Earthquake to score an MLS goal.https://t.co/APxWloxQ7i— San Francisco Chronicle (@sfchronicle) September 5, 2020 Cade Cowell pulling off an inverse Robben ✂➡🎯He's only 16 👶pic.twitter.com/gtM09Ct20O— GOAL (@goal) August 30, 2020 🇺🇸 Cade Cowell is 16 years old delivering passes like this to the leading goalscorer in @MLS history. He’s going to be special. 🤩 pic.twitter.com/T6E0mPbSSl— Football Wonderkids (@fbwonderkids) September 6, 2020
All the 16-18 year old jocks look like this now lol they did when I was in high school in 2002-2006 LOL. Don't think things have changed that much. Mentally he's still pubescent and a teenager.
Armchair Analyst: 7 Homegrowns who could follow the trail blazed by Alphonso Davies & Tyler Adams Cade Cowell Team: San Jose Earthquakes Position: Winger Age: 16 He doesn't just have pace: he has a change-of-pace that, based upon limited sample size, seems to be devastating in the open field ... Needs to work on: I wasn't going to include Cowell on this list because I still see him mostly as a straight-line runner without a ton of technique. He reminds me of what Jordan Morris was like at 21 coming out of college. Of course, we can all see what Jordan Morris has become at 25 after half-a-decade as a pro, and Cowell should work on the same things. Leverage that speed by finding space early off the ball and being decisive with it, and do more to become two-footed. Learn when to use that off-ball threat in order to push an opposing defense back, which opens up space underneath for teammates. Don't just compete defensively; win the ball. Work on receiving the ball in traffic with either foot. Use that change-of-pace as a weapon, not just a get-out-of-jail card. What the future holds: If Cowell can go on the same journey from age 16-to-21 that Morris went on from 21-to-26, then, like Morris, he will have his share of Bundesliga offers and USMNT camps and caps. Or he could choose to be, like Morris, a hometown hero. ... Morris's development has been exceptional. It's up to Cowell and the Quakes to make sure that it isn't actually an exception, though: it's a blueprint.
Since we're most likely going to suck this year, this will be the story I'll be following. Geez! What are they feeding that kid?! Sky's the limit for Cade, and wherever he winds up, he'll always be our homegrown !
Saw this on Reddit. Article from ESPN that Barcelona is scouting Cade. https://www.espn.com/soccer/soccer-...-real-madrid-radar-chelsea-plotting-rice-move
