i was watching Wheel of Fortune last night, and couldn't help but notice that I could beat the idiots they have on that show. While not all game shows are that easy, I've decided I need to get on one. Anyone have any tips on how to get on one?
--- i was on a game show a very long time ago. it was on a local network, and i left with a shoeshine kit, the result of risking everything to win big. when applying to be on a game show, it is best to show yourself to be a utter lunatic. that plays well on TV.
A friend of mine who is from Japan had a lifelong dream to be on "The Price Is Right". She visited California, made it into the studio audience, got called up, and won...A NEW CAR! Ironic thing is that they already had two new cars. Some people.
Jeopardy has contestant searches across the country throughout the year. They have the upcoming cities posted on their website. I tried out in Chicago in June and passed the test, which puts me in their player pool for one year.
My wife's cousin was on Jeopardy. He was in the lead all the way to Final Jeopardy when he had to name the house of King James of King James Bible fame. He wrote "What is Stu-" crossed it out and wrote "Tudor." The correct answer was "Stuart." Crash and burn, first to third. The funny thing is the episodes are taped months before they finally air. We couldn't figure out why he wouldn't tell us how he did. After watching, we knew why. He, um, doesn't like to talk about it.
I stood in line and took the written test to be on Jeopardy a couple years ago, but didn't pass. When I was in high school I was on a lovely program callled High Quiz Bowl on WKBT out of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, that pitted teams from various high schools against each other. It was a season long single elimination deal, kind of like the NCAA tournament or FA Cup kind of deal where if you lose you are out. We won one game, and then lost. My mom still has a tape of it somewhere, and I have pretty much the worst haircut in recorded history, as well as a fabulous sweater.
Good luck. The problem is that they always have more people than they need. I passed back in 2002 but never got called to come out to CA and be on the show. They probably knew they'd have a Ken Jennings-type situation on their hands.
I tried out for MTV's Remote Control in college and didn't even get pass the test. The questions were much, much, much harder on the test than on the show. I was expecting "Dead or Canadian?" type of questions and wound up having to name each of Cher's husbands. They eventually selected the manager of our campus radio station who went on to win the whole enchilada. He even got all of the videos correct at the end of the show. Did you check out Wheel's website or send them an email?
Unless the show in question is Jeopardy. My dad qualified to be on. He won the Alabama search. He said they ran the final few rounds like you're on TV. After he won, the host asked him what he'd do if he won a lot of money in the Tournament of Champions. My dad's response: "Buy a younger, skinnier girlfriend." It was funny, but I think it blew his chance of getting on air.
Not yet. It's on my list of things to do over the next 4 days. I'm thinking that one, Jeopardy, and Millionaire (I think that's still on)
Millionaire is still on in syndication, I think. Meredith Viera hosts. And sitting in the hot seat next to her would be winnings enough
I think that was my problem. They always ask that one and my response was "season tickets to Manchester United". The woman looked at me like I speaking Martian.
Naw, the reason they won't tell you how they did is because the show won't let them, it's some sort of breach of contract. A guy that I work with went on Millionaire w/ Meredith Viera and the show didn't air until over 6 months later and he wouldn't tell us how he did. It turns out that he missed like the 7th question and ended up with $1000. When he came back to the office we were yelling at him, "WE WAITED 6 MONTHS FOR THAT???" To this day we call it "Who Wants to be a Thousandaire" around him.
My girlfriend's sister was on Millionaire with Meredith Viera and crapped out at about the same time. I was supposed to be one of her phone-a-friends, but she cancelled me at the last minute, so I wound up going to the taping instead. So what happens? At the sixth or seventh question she's stumped, calls the phone-a-friend I was bumped for and the phone-a-friend was stumped too. - And I knew the answer to that question! I was trying to telepathically send her the answer from my seat in the studio, but my telepathy ain't what it used to be...She wound up with a thousand bucks.
I came close to getting on the college edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Unfortunately I had an eczema flare-up around my eyes and looked like an eternal stoner.
*pops head in for rare appearance* I was on Beat The Geeks in 2002. Here's how it went.....a friend referred me, gave casting my phone number and they called me. They did a phone interview and upon getting 3 out of 5 questions right, they asked me to come for an in-person interview. At that interview, you do all the paperwork (name, address, phone, if you know anyone on the show, things about your personality, fave music, films, tv shows, etc.) in a group of about 20 people. Then everyone gets up one at a time, introduces themselves and then answer a few questions based on your answers in the paperwork or just a question to test your improvisation skills. They call you back via phone at a later time if they want you for taping. They would tape 3 shows in 1 day. My friend taped her episode right after mine. She made it to the final round, but lost. I made it to the second round of my episode and the guy who beat me to go to the final ending up winning the grand prize (he won a part in a Troma horror film and got to choose how he'd die). I left with a handbag from Fossil (which is still one of my FAVE bags) and a pair of sketchers shoes that never arrived. I think I came away with the longer, better prize though...after my episode aired (about 3 months after I taped), one of the "geeks" found my friend and me via the internet and we're all friends now. if you're in L.A., some of the game shows will post contestant ads in LA Weekly (a free paper)
UPDATE: I got an email back from jeopardy. I'll be taking the test/auditioning here in DC in about a month. Very excited.
