Embarrassing! If I were Almeyda, I’d start a bunch of youngsters. If they are going to lose this bad anyway with a bunch of veterans, they may as well help build for the future and let the boys develop. What a disgrace!
Saw that ESPN was showing the Nine for IX special about the '99 USWNT for International Women's Day. Truly a seminal event for women's athletics but also a banner day for soccer in the US. A "Where were you when..." moment that undoubtedly endeared more fans to the potential entertainment and appeal in the game. It's even more powerful if you read some stories about the state of the women's game before then, and what the conditions were like in China for their WC. So thank you, Michille, Julie, Brianna, and all of the USWNT for all your hard work in lifting the game in the States and for your contribution to women's atheltics.
Seattle Sounders see smaller crowd amid coronavirus outbreak Washington State Influenza Update Week 9: February 23 - February 29, 2020 Seventy five lab-confirmed influenza deaths have been reported for the 2019-2020 season to date. • Fifty seven influenza-like illness outbreaks in long term care facilities have been reported for the 2019-2020 season to date. coronavirus deaths in Washington State = 6; none in canada are we finished panicking over the media hype and willing to look at the reality ?? we don't need to be like lemmings- when has the flu which brings 18K-30K deaths in the usa every year kept people from attending events or going out shopping
This is an Age of Panic, and the great god Pan likes his Pandemonium raw and wriggly. You want perspective? you want a calm, reasoned, yet clear eyed and determined, approach to all this? Well, then, you've not learned that a good crisis is never to be wasted.
You are missing one major point. Regular influenza probably affects half of the population in a given year, that is almost 175 million people and 61k die because of it that is 0.07 percent. Nowhere near close to the percentage of USA deaths due to the coronavirus which last I head was at 2%. The only skewed number is that most fatalities were in a convalescent home in Washington state.
I saw two shows in succession. One from 2013 and the other one from last year, 2019 I believe it was. It seems the same problems that existed with woman's pro soccer then and now haven't changed. Since their 1999 WC win, they have won two World Cups Five CONCACAF Championship trophies and three Olympic Gold Medals. On a 20 year average, that is a championship every other year. They complained about the money involved in the men's game as opposed to the women. Honestly though, I think it as to do more with the fact that no one really cares about investing heavily and losing loads of money in a Women's Pro League. They have gone through 2 different D1 women’s leagues I believe in the last 19 years, the WUSA and WPS which both folded. They are now on their third , the NWSL which has lasted longer. I'm not sure if the latest one will fold or not. After the national team won ten medals in the last 20 years and no improvement of the Women's' Pro League since however , I don't think the next 20 years will be any better.
The same women though, do in fact support NBA, NFL, MLB , NHL and MLS games. There are many women fans attending those matches.
they rather go to men sports then support there fellow sisters . yet men are called sexist if they don't go to women sports
I'm not normally known as a big fan of the media to begin with, but the current display of fearmongering-for-hits-and-ratings has to be among their lowest points ever. (Yes, some of it is political, and the sight of some in the business gleefully anticipating rivers of death across the country being to their partisan advantage is beneath contemptible, but that aside nothing they're doing is intended to inform or reassure or assist i any way) This bottom line is that theres a highly contagious virus running around out there and mortality aside nobody wants to be sick as a dog for a week, as with any other flu. But it ain't the black plague
This is why this "panic" is pretty damn important. The idea that its "just the flu" or "no worse than the flu" is a complete misread of the danger we're in if this is left to run unchecked: 1236721200291655680 is not a valid tweet id Health care systems need to prepare for spike in patients due to #SARSCoV2 #COVID19 #coronavirus. Some will be worried well, but many may need ICU-level care. In the meantime, we need to do everything possible to buy ourselves time and #FlattenTheCurve. https://t.co/XMB8hdtC9D pic.twitter.com/5dQrIKx5kf— Céline Gounder, MD, ScM, FIDSA 🇺🇦 (@celinegounder) March 8, 2020 Dr. Celine Gounder, beyond being an infectious disease specialist, professor, and (as I learned today) fellow Husky, also has a soccer connection. She's married to Grant Wahl. Now that doesn't mean running around and buying 7 Costco size packs of toilet paper and 12 flats of water makes sense. But anything we can do to flatten that curve and stretch this pandemic out over time is going to save lives.
Since you posted the above on other threads, I'll reply the way I did there. Yes, let's act swiftly and with reason and evidence leading the way. No, let's not embrace panic. ___________________________________________________________ "Perhaps the quotation marks indicate that when you say panic is pretty damn important you really mean something other than panic. Here is a dictionary definition of the noun: "Panic: sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behavior." So fear and anxiety are natural, but if we allow it to be uncontrollable it leads to rashness, to stupidity, to destructive and self-defeating behavior. Between this "Panic" you laud, and blase' dismissal as "no worse than the [ordinary] flu", is focused attention on learning what we are facing, on action as rapid as possible to minimize the spread of the contagion, and on a fixed determination to mitigate its effects. If we are to succeed at this, the last thing we can do is to "panic first, face reality later". As I said before, in other posts, it would be of ugly interest to discover how 21st Century modernity would behave before an epidemic much more lethal and contagious than the Wuhan virus...say the Spanish Influenza of 1918-1919."
