I'd say that in '18, for his position, Adams had become one of the top players in the league. That's what I'm using for 'breakout'. Pomykal isn't there, yet.
OK. High Bar. I look at it as guy who has played sparingly, if at all in previous years. Becomes starter and is a top 10-20ish American in the league.
I hear ya. I set the bar that high because this is the NT forum, and the league is MLS. If the league were the B1 then getting sub's appearances spot starts in UCL, league, and cup matches would be enough to be considered a breakout. A young MLSer needs to be little bit more dominant, imo
Believe it or not, Tanner Tessman choosing FCD over Clemson is currently one of the "top headlines" on ESPN's main page. Keen MLS fans will remember the opposite. Young FCD goalkeeper and USYNTer Josh Lambo chose to go to Texas A&M to become a place kicker. He currently kicks for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even longer term MLS fans will remember USYNTer Devin Barclay leaving the Crew to become a place kicker. He ended up starting for Ohio State. But here we have a kid choosing to stay in MLS. There are rumors that not only will he be in the 18 this weekend for FCD...............he might start. Pomykal and Servania are both unavailable. https://www.espn.com/college-sports...-tessmann-opts-sign-fc-dallas-kicking-clemson Clemson does return starting kicker B.T. Potter, but Swinney said he was looking forward to working with Tessmann as well. "He's one of the best athletes," Swinney said in December. "He could go play D-I basketball. He could probably start at receiver at Clemson. He could probably play safety at Clemson. He's a 6-foot-2 phenom. He can fly. He's as good athlete as I've ever seen."
Lambo has put together a good NFL career too. It looks like he made the right call, I imagine that Tessman figures that he could always go looking for that kicking scholarship if the soccer thing doesn't work out.
I think the Tessman headline may have more to do with Clemson football than MLS - I could see the same headline if he chose to attend Juilliard. YMMV.
They have been for a while. Tessman is the 28th academy product that they've signed to a first team FCD contract. They currently have 13 players under the age of 23 on their first team roster. We are excited to announce that we've signed Tanner Tessmann to a Homegrown contract! 👊@frantanjam5 is #DTID— FC Dallas (@FCDallas) February 27, 2020
You know if they were more successful in attendance / relevant in the local market etc like Garber just talked about I don't think they would have the academy they do. It's on the verge of being a factory for the national team if a few of they players are good enough to move on and keep the conveyor belt running. If they had the pressure LAG have to sign and play stars etc I think they might have a similar academy. Sux for them probably ever winning a title but good for the national team.
I think the definition you used in another post is appropriate. It isnt the player that breaks out in MLS, but the young MLS player that breaks into the the USMNT. I'd have the 2019 player as Cannon. He isnt as strong as Adam's from 2018, but definitely the guy who got the most minutes last year and a decent probability of getting them this year.
At the risk of being gauchely off-topic, it would seem that at the moment the bulk of the most impactful breakout young players for us this year are in Europe.
At the risk of being gauchely off-topic, it would seem that at the moment the bulk of the most impactful breakout young players for us this year are in Europe. Not to say that this thread is irrelevant, but... the real relevance right now as far as this goes is the Bundesliga, isn't it?
I can't believe there's a post claiming conversation about young MLS players, some of whom have senior team call-ups already, is being questioned for relevance on a board where people are still arguing incessantly about Jurgen Klinsmann leaving Landon Donovan off the 2014 World Cup roster.
Yet the number of talented young Americans in MLS is higher than ever. That should tell us something about this generation.
The fed needs to look into this. They could help the entire pool if they can identify weakness in workouts, diet etc to keep players healthier. Would help their club teams and of course the national team. I would get someone to look at which teams in top 20 leagues are the most healthy and see of there is a trainer or common denominator for their health. With our best players in constant injury purgatory perhaps this could be the most important thing the fed can do right now.
exactly!! It’s a bad look when approximately 75-90% of our best XI are chronically injured and also take much longer returning from injuries.
17 net defensive incidents and an assist for Tessman. Whoscored 8.0 for MOTM. Was strong in both halves. Needs to get cleaner in the passing, but he really impressed for a debut. Early leader.
Yeah... Like I said earlier... I feel like have to root for the Galaxy due to my locale... but FC Dallas is must-see TV for USMNT Youth Fans. Not sure why the announcers were bagging on Tessmann in the 1st half. He had a couple of missed passes but I thought he played very well... especially considering it was his first game. He ends up with an assist and to Paxton of all players! I know people argue that Paxton broke out last season.... but he didn't do all that much with respect to scoring stats... so there is still a ton of room to break out IMO and that was a great start. Love watching Cannon and Ferreira too... and to think they have Pepi and Servania as well. It is like a US U23 squad out there. Just fantastic. On the other side... I thought Aaronson and McKenzie also had good games. The Union O just disappeared when Aaronson went off and I like McKenzie's speed and athleticism. We are so weak at CB on the USMNT... it would be nice to see McKenzie and Richards manning the back in the near future.
Highlights are honestly my first look at Tessman. Thought Dabo was was stretching it a bit. Maybe not. Man-Child.
Aaronson played with a purpose. He pressed quite well in Philly's system. He was good on getting on the ball, shielding it, and making the pass. He ran into a few too many blind alleys, imo. Also, so far, his skill set seems more 8 than 10. He needs to be more goal dangerous at the top of a diamond. McKenzie was excellent. Was surprisingly strong his duels. Showed great range. Had a game high passing % of 89. Tessman--7 tackles. I'm tired of all the make-believe Pirlos who keep getting hyped. Go with the strength in the pool. Wouldn't say Pomykal was a young MLS breakout player last year. But again, my rationale is that an MLS breakout needs to be one of the top players for his position. Those are the types who have the best chances of impacting the NT.
Breakout Player of the Week by Category 1) Starlet Category (ie those without prior significan MLS experience)--Tessman 2) National Team Candidate (not yet established with Nats)--Pomykal 3) Older Dudes (with or without national team experience)--Zimmerman
