Stan Kroenke gets called out by Don Garber (along with Dynamo and Dallas ownerships): Don Garber calls out the Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas, and the Rapids got their lack of relevance in their respective major markets. 😬 pic.twitter.com/ewCPsAzPMt— MLS Buzz (@MLS_Buzz) February 28, 2020 Wonder if this will push him to do better as an owner, poor some more cash into the team, and try to stake a more relevant claim on the CO market..... It’s too early in the day for jokes that funny (One can still hope though, right????)
Not a fan. Overly dramatic, bombastic, Hollywood. Feel like I’m supposed to be watching a Transformers movie. Good thing I don’t really care one way or another about the MLS anthem.
Hoping to see the Rapids back on Comcast as they kick off a new season? Don't count on it. https://t.co/ly12oECeSv by @KyleFredrickson #Rapids96— Denver Post Rapids (@rapidsnews) February 28, 2020
Could the end of expansion create the scarcity needed to drive up the price of the Rapids enough to tempt Stan to sell to a new owner?
A. Expansion isn’t ending any time soon (despite what the league may say) B. Unlikely given that what the league will probably finish at there won’t be that many major metro areas that could afford to pay that much and support a team
Has Stan ever sold anything? We are not that lucky, plus his kid is the puppet owner to get around NFL rules so he can own the Rams.
No, that’s not accurate. I’m not sure who the legal owner is right now (Stan or Josh) but Stan was not required to sell the Rapids to buy the Rams like he was forced to sell the Avs and Nuggets. Soccer is legally exempt from that rule after Lamar Hunt sued the NFL when they tried to force him to sell the NASL Dallas Tornado while he owned the KC Chiefs, and won.
Sure it is, although the teams (but not their stadiums) were transferred to his wife and son was made managing partner, per 2 articles I pulled up. Took 5 years to hash out to get NFL owners approval. https://bleacherreport.com/articles...to-retain-rams-transfer-nuggets-and-avalanche "The league doesn't allow an owner to own an NFL team in one city and another pro sports franchise in another," Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk wrote. "This deal was a condition of Kroenke buying the Rams in 2010, and these things take some time because of the complexity of estate law."
You'll notice nowhere in that article are the Rapids mentioned. That's because soccer won an exemption from the NFL's rules in an anti-trust case. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamar_Hunt Now Stan may have transferred the Rapids to Josh along with the Avs and Nuggets, Maybe to e ven grease the wheels with the other NFL owners, but he was not required to by the NFL he couldn't have been legally. Remember Lamar owned the NFL Chiefs, as well as the MLS Wizards, Burn, and Crew all at the same time.
Wish I’d known, might have gone there. On bus to Denver. Next time... I’m on bus to Denver, I will be bummed if I find out I could have stayed in Boulder.
So, the Rapids are officially earning 3ppg right now. That's pretty solid! Upcoming Schedule: Is it next Saturday night yet?#Rapids96 pic.twitter.com/aAaBS8CfhC— Colorado Rapids (@ColoradoRapids) March 1, 2020 Based on this last weekends games across the league, I think the Rapids have a very real chance at continuing that average... Vs Orlando: Sure, it will be an Oscar Pareja led team, but Orlando will be without Nani again, and it will be at home. Orlando had some chances against FSL at home, but really looked lacking in either their final ball or their actual shots on goal (2 of their 9 shots were on target). DC for example had more shots, and more shots on target with similar numbers in passes in the attacking half and final third. Orlando seems to look to cross the ball a lot, and to get Ruan (dude's fast) involved in the attack. They attempted 27 crosses in their game (the Rapids attempted 28) - which should suit well for us as we have good aerial defense in the box on open play, and our wing backs aren't afraid to press the ball. I think this game will be fairly similar to our game against DC United - if you look at the underlying numbers (insert sarcastic tone) - which means it's a very winnable matchup. @ Whitecaps This will be another away test for the Rapids, but it will be against what should be a less formidable opponent than DC United. Their new signing Lucas Cavallini is definitely someone to watch out for, but their defensive 6 appear to have some problems. Vancouver put in a good fight, but ultimately lost at home to SKC 3-1. If the Rapids play good possession soccer like we did on Saturday, we again should match up well against the Whitecaps and have a chance to steal another 3 points on the road. Vs Houston Houston will be an interesting match for sure. It's a new coaching era for them as Tab Ramos is now leading the charge for the Dynamo. They just played the LA Gals to a 1-1 draw at home. Houston out-possessed, out-passed, and out-shot the visitors - all while doing so without Alberth Elis and Darwin Quintero. The Galaxy's defense has also always been their Achilles heal, so Houston's attack really got to go at it against them. However, Houston appears to be very exploitable on counter attacks (a Rapids specialty). Better finishing on counterattacks would've had the Galaxy up 3-1 on the day (or 3-2 if you give Houston better finishing as well). If Elis and Quintero both play on the wings for Houston against us, it will be tough to defend against. However, Elis and Quintero are also known for their fairly pitiful effort on the defensive side of the ball. If the Rapids can sit deep, defend well, and build on counter-attacks, Houston will be very beatable at altitude. They like to run and run fast. The 75th minute and on (when the Rapids were really constricting the life out of DC) will be the Rapids time to really shine as well. There's a very real chance that the Rapids could go 4-0-0 in our first 4 games. There's also no reason that we don't go 2-0-2 in our first 4 games and grab 8 points either. Maybe I'm still riding the high from Saturday's game, but based on how this first weekend went in the MLS, I think we have a real shot at starting the season really strong.
Something to keep our eyes on https://www.espn.com/soccer/major-l...ls-task-force-monitoring-coronavirus-outbreak
Did we ever sign the 2nd pick, Robin Afamefuna? Given he needs an international slot probably not but I don't recall hearing anything regarding him.
Figures, We finally have something we want to watch and between KSE & Covid-19 possible gov't response we may not be able to see it.
We made it through the Plague, so what's a little Coronavirus? Won't slow us down from having below-average attendance!
For those that have an Athletic subscription: https://theathletic.com/1649270/202...g-mls-is-back-and-so-is-rapidman-potentially/ Has the normal discussion that the Rapids are holding try-outs for a new Rapidman. But it goes a bit further and talks about some of the history with pics from a military visit, etc. It also talks about some knock-off Rapidmen around the country with pictures. I learned from it, which is nice from a national coverage piece. As it typical with The Athletic, nice job. (they also mentioned the Rapids were in the "one weird thing" last year, all of it as a surprise to how good we were doing) rod.
