I was just being silly and repurposing someone else’s post. I’m just saying we can amd should market what we have better than we have been doing. I would disagree with anyone who thinks they can’t better market the players we have.

How can they market gimenez when he’s still playing for Velez? How do you market aliseda when he’s still in Argentina? Let’s see what happens when these guys are here and are actually playing.

  4. Mansueto probably has a business plan of more than 3-5 to rectify this ship ... and probably longer than that ....not lets throw money at some over the hill player(s) and hope for the best.

Whatever. I'm not sure why you insist on making this an argument. It's not a big deal. I happen to think that you can market your team with good players whether or not they where well know before they came here. I'll bet 90% or more of MLS fans had never heard of Giovinco. At the time, Serie A wasn't on ESPN. If I remember correctly, it was on BeIn at the time. So, only a serious streaming fan would have likely seen him play for his club, and if you did, you wouldn't have seen that much. In 6 seasons at Juventus, he scored 12 league goals. He did better on loan at Parma, but who the hell watches Parma?

From the moment they announced the exit from Bridgeview to March 21 was the most critical period in any longer-term vision for the club as a business. They completely blew it, and it's going to be ten times as difficult to build from the mess they've created. That's just the reality of it.

A big name European league box-office star is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition of those broader business goals, four months ago or going forward, but it's a potential avenue to help things along.

This is absurdly stupid. How do they market a game that hasn’t been played yet? Of course they can market their players.

Giovinco was, at the time he arrived, a boundary-pushing signing for MLS as a prime-age player with an elite club and national team.

That most people hadn't seen him play is beside the point, the IDEA of Giovinco was something that got the national soccer media engaged and was exciting for people interested in the evolution of MLS.

In terms of judging the ticket-buying effects of that it's tough to disentangle it from what a huge and fun to watch success he was on the field, but the signing itself was A Thing, I think it's silly to deny that.

We have every reason to anticipate Gimenez will be a quality player, but his signing is following a well-trodden path for MLS players coming from South America. It's nothing to raise eyebrows. Even signing another Giovinco wouldn't be quite as eyebrow raising anymore, the bar keeps going upwards for that kind of splash.

I guess I fundamentally disagree that they completely blew it

I think Joe will be able to weather the storm, lol.

There's no doubt the club shot themselves in the foot, with the somnambulant pace of putting together a team. But to say they've "completely blown it" is a tad hyperbolic, no?

It seem like Mansueto's in this for the long haul. He has ambition and a boatload of money. Just as we were cursed by Cakes, I think we'll be blessed by Mansueto.

Prediction: Everyone is going to freak the f-ck out about attendance the first time the team draws poorly in a rainy-40 degree game this spring, and that freakout will include no less than three "we should have stayed in Bridgeview" posts across BS/Twitter/Reddit.

is the success of a fútbol team is measured by its attendance?

Do you really want to do the attendance-(dick)measuring exercise to validate your fandom?

The fire won't reach Seattle or Atlanta numbers ... and for all the nut-riding on LAFC.... 30% chance the Fire outdraw them. (only 22.5K needed)

In all honesty...I do believe the long term vision for the Fire is good (other then the crappiest team emblem thing) but what ticks me off is suddenly it feels like a rebuild when Mansueto made it clear he wanted the playoffs THIS SEASON. Rebuild should have been under Potato (who sucked at that too). I am sure all these pick ups are fine...Yay. Blow my socks off with relatively unproven players and it is stupid to say a player is an International player for his country for 2 minutes playing time. I am sure they will all be...ok...in the end...but seems to me we are already making excuses for THIS SEASON. He is a freakin billionaire so..he can actually afford to put players on the field that can be both GREAT PROVEN players as well as FAN DRAWS. HE was the one that said PLAYOFFS NOW and FUTURE. He NEVER said hey going to be a long measured road back to greatness. So forgive me for being less then excited when I was excited. I will still be there with my season tickets because I was dumb and bought into the PLAYOFFS 2020 pitch but yes...I want to see the greats as well as great soccer.

Is the success of an MLS franchise as a business measured by its attendance?

    Pretty much, yeah.

As a fan I just want to see a good show, and an empty stadium is more elbow room and shorter beer lines for me, I'm not sweating (something of an exaggeration I guess, it is fun to be a part of a good crowd, especially in soccer which is communal by nature)

But as an evangelist for the game of soccer in America (which I feel like most American soccer people have in common), the success of the national league in my home market is of keen interest to me, a seeming miracle arrived in Mansueto buying out both Hauptman and the Bridgeview lease, and utter shambles of what has followed that from a business perspective is honestly twice as shocking as the arrival of the opportunity in the first place.

They gave themselves a six-inch putt, and then took out a driver and fired it into Lake Michigan.

Much easier to put two logos side by side with a date, then market a player who has never even put on your jersey let alone in a game. Use some common sense instead of just complaining all day.

  18. You are in the wrong forum and with the wrong fans if this is what you want.

Give an example of what more they can do with gimenez a guy who was literally announced 48 hrs ago. There’s been 6 posts about gimenez on twitter since his signing 1 in Spanish, 3 on instagram, and 4 on Facebook. So please tell me marketing genius what else can they do? Keep yelling at the clouds old man.

FWIW, I dropped my opener tickets back onto ticketmaster at cost last week and they got snapped up in two days, so *someone* is clearly buying.

It was hard to get my 4 tickets next to each other and still in the club seats if that's worth anything.

I’m sorry you’re too dumb to understand the conversation. It happens. Continue to hate me and ignore intelligent conversation. It’ll save the others from having to deal with you. I’ll take that bullet for the team.

I’m sorry your not clever enough to come up with one thing the team could be differently so your resort to name calling like an entitled child. I would say 11 social media posts in 48 hrs is pretty damn good.

Twitter is like flushing the toilet. I’m suggesting the team tell an engaging story.
