I agree on that one, plus when it's a major competition it's always geared to Euro time zone, so, it would be totally unsociable time's, similar to the Rugby World Cup right now if you're in the States like me.
Damnit, look what Bolivia did by opening the door to 5-nation bids (they're not officially in with CHUPAR, but have asked): now Ireland wants to join the UK bid
2030 is the centenarium of the first world cup: 3 country's of South America with uruguay one of the 3 or 1 country of each confederation.
Colombia, Peru and Ecuador insists with splitting South America. https://www.elobservador.com.uy/not...peru-tambien-quieren-el-mundial-2020123165418
This has to end in a Conmebol primary - no way either of these bids wins in the FIFA Congress without Conmebol wheeling and dealing on its behalf, and a fair shot through a primary process is the best way to minimize the other bidding nations feeling aggrieved. Then again, after all the bidding nations abstain, it would basically boil down to a panel of Brazil, Bolivia and Venezuela casting the deciding votes.
Whatever the case may be I think regional joint bid World Cups will be the new norm. No more single country bids ever again. Especially after FIFA takes a look at the record high tickets sales for the continental Euro coming up.
Agree completely. More so, not only will UEFA be overdue, but by 2030 fans in mainland Europe* won't have had a World Cup since Germany 2006 - that's 24 years! I say the above because to me Russia 2018 didn't feel altogether like a European World Cup. Even the more westerly venues such as Kaliningrad, Saint Petersburg and Moscow are quite far from many of the prominent competing European nations and places like Kazan, Samara and Yekaterinburg are practically in Asia (regardless of any geography textbook definition of Europe). The impact of this is that by 2030 we'll have an entire generation of football fans from mainland Europe* who haven't had the opportunity to see a World Cup held entirely in their own continent. Fans in mainland Europe* are long overdue a World Cup in a location that can be flown to at a reasonable price, or even got to via rail or road should one really want to, and for this reason I would be only too pleased if the joint Spain / Portugal bid is successful. A lot of European people take their holidays in these countries and fans could even get value for money combining their summer holiday with taking in some World Cup action up close and personal. Spain / Portugal 2030 could be a truly wonderful tournament for a continent which has been starved a World Cup for far too long. * my use of "mainland Europe" in this context might have geography scholars spitting feathers. It is not meant to infuriate of offend anybody. By "mainland Europe, I mean Western Europe, Central Europe, Iberia and the Mediterranean.
To say Russia did not feel like a Euro World Cup may be valid but is still pretty much meaningless to me when pertaining to this bidding process. Uruguay-Arg-Par will feeel WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY different than Brasil 2014 if they host. It will be like another planet since it will be very cold down there. Col-Ecu-Peru would be similar to Brasil 2014 in climate (in some areas) but still very different in cultures and language and altitudes/elevations etc. So that argument about Russia not counting as Europe pretty much does not hold any water to me. If they are part of UEFA they are part of Europe. End of story.
People, I just came from the future. These are all the World Cups coming up 2030 - Argentina, Uruguay, Chile 2034 - England, Wales, Scotland 2038 - China 2042 - Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia 2046 - Spain, Portugal 2050 - Jamaica
2050 will be an all Carribbean affair as FIFA will expand the World Cup to all countries. Come 2054, the World Cup will be held on Jupiter and will be expanded to an intergalactic tournament. The Earth's World Champion will just be declared based on FIFA ranking to compete against teams from other planets and galaxies...
They'll try...but the Plutonians will use their natural resource money to win the bid even though they're too small, will need avant-garde technology to make their stadia playable, and rely on a brutal guest worker regime.
Portugal should host the world cup alone no need for Spain to be involved. Spain already hosted a world cup in 1982. we hosted EURO 2004 on our own just fine. the final would be in a rebuilt National Stadium in Lisbon (which needs rebuilding). other games in Estadio da Luz, Alvalade, Dragao, Bessa, Braga, all the typical venues. I would also suggest hosting games in Ponta Delgada (Azores) and Madeira.
Look, I love Portugal, I take my holidays there and believe me you won't find a bigger advocate for Portugal-Spain 2030 than me (other than Portuguese and Spaniards). I'd actually prefer Portugal & Spain to host World Cup 2030 over my home country of the UK because I think you'd both be great hosts and give visitors an all round better "summer World Cup experience" than the UK. That said, Portugal hosting a World Cup alone isn't viable. Euro 2004 was a much smaller tournament than a 48 team World Cup. Portugal pulled off a very nice Euros with 8 stadiums, but 6 of them were (presumably still are) under the minimum stadium size of 40000. You would need 16 sufficiently large stadia to host the World Cup. I appreciate you might say stadiums can be expanded, which is true in itself, but in Portugal's case creates a very real risk of "white elephant" developments. I watch a fair bit of Primeira Liga action when I'm over there and whilst I love what I watch on the pitch, off the field the fact is only Benfica, Porto and Sporting have enough paying supporters to fill a World Cup size ground. For instance, the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques in Guimaraes would need a 10000 extension to be a World Cup venue but Vitoria's average attendance is only 16000. The Estadio Algarve is already something of a white elephant, built especially for Euro 2004 and since only used infrequently by lower division teams who in some cases only have attendances of a few hundred (Louletano), the odd lower category national team game and once very few seasons for the Super Taca. It would become even more of a white elephant having to be extended further to meet the minimum World Cup capacity requirements. I could give you other examples. I believe Portugal's best hopes of hosting the World Cup are to team with Spain.
Totally agree with Real Mardin on this one. Would be great to see some WC matches in Portugal - maybe even the final itself in Lisbon. However, can't possibly see them doing this new format alone. Huge difference between 16-team Euro 2004 and this 48-team monstrosity the World Cup has become now.
The Funny thing is Braga had to switch its Europa League date to yesterday because Porto was playing at the same time if they played today Their stadiums are like 45 minutes away from each other but the excuse was that the traffic would have been horrible. If Portugal can't even host two club matches in the same day could you imagine the congested schedule of an expanded World Cup???? It is simply too small of a country to have such a burden. Also, Politically joint World Cup bids are the way of the future. Solo World Cup bids will go the way of the Dodo.
Eh, I don't know about that. For instance, we (the US) could've hosted 2026 on our own, but decided to go with a joint bid to avoid losing votes out of spite against our country in particular.
You prove my point. There is more incentive to have a bunch of Countries get together politically. There is also incentive for Nations to do it monetarily. There is less incentive to bid on your own in comparison.
The ONLY World Cup that could be done only in one country going forward is China. Thats it Going forward I'm damn near sure its all gonna be co-hosted. United 2026 opened up pandoras box with this and its no going back.
really good post, I too am personally hoping for Spain-Portugal in 2030, with one of the South American bids just behind that. I really hope it's not some sort of UK bid winning. I'm sure they'd put on a superior WC if just attending matches is considered, but it's just not as interesting place to visit for me, been there already too many times.
