If you trade one of our DMs, that leaves us needing a starting RB (where Canouse has beaten a lawn chair for the job) and leaves without any DM cover if there's an injury or when Moreno is gone for a month during Copa America, which is IMO significantly more important than getting someone to push Birnbaum, Brilliant and Pines.
Thread over on DCU reddit has an update from the Screaming Eagles Annual Meeting. Among other things, it says: Club is working on a free streaming option via DC website. Club is offering free tickets for Season Ticket Holders to away games at Red Bulls, NYCFC, and Philly. Maybe next year on the roof. Several other news and notes. Don't know if any of it is true (wasn't there), just passing along... https://www.reddit.com/r/DCUnited/comments/f8g40n/screaming_eagles_annual_meeting_fo_updates/
If this rumor is true, it means that Durkin is being sold to the Belgian club. That means in the summer, without additions, Moreno would be gone with just Canouse and Felipe as DMs. Of course you could use Segura or Gressel in a pinch, but it's better to have a "real" DM who can slot in for absences and injuries. The biggest hole I see is LB, where there is no real cover for Mora.
UPDATE, Monday, Feb. 24, 2:50 pm ET: Arriola has undergone reconstructive surgery on his torn ACL, D.C. United announced Monday. The operation was reportedly successful, with no additional damage discovered in his meniscal or articular cartilage. The midfielder will begin his lengthy rehab on Wednesday in Herndon, Virginia at the facility of OrthaVirgnia, where the operation took place. -J!
2 goals by Gamble (who?), 2 by Kamara, one each from Fatone (not really, but who?) Segura, Sorga. We need strikers. We scored 13 goals in our first 10 games last season, only Birnbaum and Segura (1each) are still on the roster. Thx, Jay!
It's like no one on this forum think Kamara can score goals in MLS. The team must think Kamara/Sorga/Yow are enough at forward.
While I do think Kamara is a legit talent. The team thinking they are enough doesn’t mean much given their history of finding top level attackers.
At least the team has some depth at forward. Currently, there are no healthy reserve center backs, maybe only one healthy reserve fullback, and the healthy reserve holding/D-mid starts at right back. The team needs depth at those positions before it needs another striker.
Agreed. And, Gordon Wild in on his 3rd/4th? team in MLS. If he was a surefire MLS talent, he would have stuck somewhere by now. I would rather take a flyer on the 20 year old Estonian Messi, than a 25 year old who hasn't held a starting or significant backup role in MLS.
We have 22 players on the roster at the moment, if I am not mistaken. Investment is what we need, not trades.
In 2020 we need more than this. Kamara has my full confidence especially with service from Gressel, Asad and Flores...he could honestly post career goalscoring numbers if they all remain healthy. I also expect our midfielders to contribute a decent haul themselves based on DCU tactical approach in years past. But if Kamara gets injured Sorga and Yow (or even Segura) don't inspire much fear in opposing defenders. They could be successful but I think it's irresponsible to gamble on such a plan.
Ola Kamara has 17 goals the last two years. He had 14 with the Galaxy in 2018 while playing out of position most of the year.
Because I'm a sadist, I looked up stats and found out that DC United hasn't had a +15 goal scorer since Luciano Emilio scored 20 in 2007.
Didn't he have Zlatan drawing a crowd during that time? We've got no Ferrari. We've got a bunch of Fiats and maybe a couple Alfa's.
He also scored 16 and 18 when he was in Columbus. And the year he scored 16, Higuain didn't do much at all. I think the forum as a whole continues to underrate Kamara. Poll incoming.
Sorga still isn't on the official roster, but Goff tells me that he is awaiting a contract upgrade and a work visa, both of which he says are "imminent." I hope he's right and all is done by Saturday so that is eligible to dress. Not sure he would make the 18, but we probably will need him for spot duty now and then.
Once Sorga is eligible fully eligible, he'll be in the 18 and he'll get playing time. Ben Olsen said they didn't bring him here to sit on the bench and eat Sour Patch Kids, after all.
Ha! That was an actual Ben Olsen quote from this story. "Estonian forward Erik Sorga — who is currently on a USL contract — played only a handful of minutes in United’s last preseason game against Louisville City FC, but Olsen said he has the potential to be both a viable option behind forward Ola Kamara or deployed in a two-forward formation alongside Kamara. “The more we see him, the more we feel he is similar to Ola,” Olsen said. “There could be times that we play Ola and Erik together. He didn’t come here to hang out at the end of the bench and eat Sour Patch Kids.”"
