so i gather you dont like herdman's glamor, glitz and positive statements

but on the game vs the usa with a loss of 4-1, i do put the blame on john- his player and game tactics undermined the team's confidence and belief- why he did that is a puzzle

IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT TRY TO FIX IT

Herdman was never the best choice. The CMNT job is his FIRST head coaching position of a men's team. That is NOT an entry level job. He has the best players we've had in 2 decades and is not getting it done. But don't worry, I'm sure the old boys club at the CSA will praise him and keep him around.

He never should have been given the job. He is totally unqualified.

You are bang on . I was a big OZ fan and I must have wrote here back then how disgraceful he was treated.

John wanted to move up and leave the Canadian Women's team and told the CSA if they want him to stay, he has to have the Men's team. They decided they had to keep him but of course the problem was they had a guy in OZ. So, stories get said and whispered that he was a problem (he was in one sense as he was pushing for change with how the provincial associations operate within the CSA - big problem and old boys network ). They eventually got a couple of media people to hard sell OZ was a problem (i am not accusing them of willingly lying but perhaps they were fed things they thought were true), and hes out. just not the way to go about things .But John speaks well, is highly charasmatic, and most of all is willing to work within the CSA and provincial structures without pushing hard for change like OZ and Floro did.

I just look at his results so far. And we can't count all the laydown opponents, they have faced three tough ones, Haiti and the US twice. He is 1-2 including blowing a 2-0 halftime lead.

I am not blaming that squarely on John, but there is a consensus that he was out managed in the two losses; and to move Davies to LB in the 2nd US game and completely change a winning dynamic was strange.

And its still funny that since 1986, our two best WCQ campaigns were the two that Bobby managed. We haven't made the hex since then.

This roster is the best we have ever had, just serious talent. If they don't qualify for 2022 even if they have to go through the grand backdoor tournament, it would be highly disappointing.

I dont think he is "the guy", but he talks well and build relationships well so I would not be surprised if he gets to stick around for 2026 when we get in automatically.

LOL. For all the flack he gets (and yes he deserves a lot of it) he was a very good player and coach.

Yes, he was a very good manager right from 87 up until he got sacked by the CSA. His teams played a very entertaining style and he got good results. And of course he had a great playing career.

I like to remember that Bobby. Not the guy that was crippled under Kerfoots direction and turned into disgraced executive. I dont know if he misses being President, but his life must be a whole lot more relaxed and enjoyable.

watch this goal from Phonzie in a friendly game today: (as posted on GC)

    https://twitter.com/hashtag/CANMNT?src=hashtag_click

whats amazing to me is his right foot flicking back behind his left boot to make a forward pass-- does that make sense?? few players in the world can do that type of quick thinking and have the skill to pull it off- its one of the most unusual passes you will ever see and he does it at almost top speed!!

the Kid is becoming a world class player … and we are lucky to have seen him in his early days and now have him play for the red and white

strong rumor- Ottawa in CPL for 2020- sponsored by athletico madrid

medium rumor- Mark Anthony Kaye to club brugge in transfer - hard to believe that LAFC would let him go - even GC had a mock cap line-up with kaye in the #6 position

MDS is saying he hopes to sign MF(s) soon - he cant wait until the summer to get a top-notch MF

ex-whitecap coach, carl robinson, sitting next to his agent, david baldwin, who lined up a litany of failed signings like marvin emnes and Bernie ibini

the whitecaps can only hope that carl does sign-on to be bottom-dwellers Newcastle's new head coach- will save the Club some money

soccer people who had carl pinned for a top job in England were rather foolish... and soccer-knowledgeable people know that carl has HUGE flaws in his coaching and its why he hasn't landed a good gig - the main flaw being that he is capable of analyzing his tactics, strategies and recruitment and then making adjustments- a coach who is not a learner of the game will suffer more failures than successes

From GC forum- So looks like no Ranko or Owusu for Portland because of visa issues, but Godoy got his sorted earlier this week. He’s here, but rehabbing a calf injury suffered in San Diego

sounds like 2019 all over again-- the Club and MDS has had 4 months to get new players and have them in for training camp to set the season up for a more positive start and to bring hope, trust and belief

there is supposed to be new knowledgeable regime in the FO and MDS had supposedly learned his lessons from 2019 re:recruiting- after cavallini, what really has changed for 2020?? do you see the same pattern emerging ?? word has it that ranko's injury might be longer term (another khimiri??)

    GROAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear you. Not big improvements beyond Lucas. They seem to have stayed within the MLS funded money still, even Cavellini was bought down so not a ton of cash out of Mr Kerfoot's wallet.

The next casualty will be MDS if they are not in a reasonable position come June.

    STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES:

ex-Cap coach, carl robinson, has done it again- he went to player agent, david baldwin, who sent a litany of failed players to the Club and robo signed them

now robo in his new team, Newcastle, in the Australia league, has signed ex-Cap, Bernie ibini and is going after more of baldwin's stable for signings

I always said that robo's achilles with the Caps and for his career was his inability to learn from his mistakes

Yet our play is looking a lot better. I know it's just pre-season but it is much better than last year's. We'll see shortly as March is 4 games: SKC(h), LAG(a), Col(h), NYC(a). We really need to win against SKC & Colorado.

after watching the preseason game vs Minnesota- and yah a nice way to end the preseason, which means zippity-doo-dah- I came away more impressed with the team chemistry and unity on the field, linking of passes on the ground and the pressuring to win the ball back- those were the best parts of the game- Montero's goal was the icing

in 2019, the team was usually very disjointed, but on Saturday, the team played as a UNIT- if the Caps add 2 good players (nothing significant, though), then I think 2020 offers us some hope that a corner has been turned and a truck isn't coming on the other side

March will tell us a lot about what we have, but the MF still has to be beefed up - I will be there at the home opener- I am predicting a crowd in the 24 000 range

Remember that George Vancouver thread from years ago in the supporters folder here? That Iron Shiek fella may have been ahead of his time trying to cancel GV. Seems the statue got vandalized this week and may be on its way out!

Five distinct possibilities over the next 6 months:

    1. in-beom will be sold- its already in the works and the Caps will receive a bonus of $1 mill (beyond what the Club paid for him) towards a new player(s)- IMO, he is a second tier player and the russian league is a second tier league in europe - he was an underperformer and is not worth his DP salary- with proper scouting (is that possible wit this Club???), a much better AMF can be signed (if any really want to come here, what with the history of this Club and its deceitful owners and FO)

    2. ali adnan will be sold- really is he worth a top salary of over $1 mill for a defender ?? i think not

    3. yordy reyna will be sold - his enigmatic play needs to be upgraded and maybe someplace else, he will learn to apply himself consistently and use his skills in a more dynamic way

    4. marc crepeau will be sold to some euro team who see his good potential- he is a quality goalie on a bad team- hasler will take over whether he is ready or not and IMO, marc is a better goalie

    5. dos santos and his staff will be replaced for the 2021 season by an axel schuster choice- i like MDS and he and his staff work their arses off, but really, they have been underachieving- after 2 seasons with MDS, this team looks more like an expansion team aka cincy

and the ownership group will continue to be the worst in MLS- i really wonder what their long-term plan is - cash out to an american city, aka the grizzlies of NBA?

good to see you posting potato. Been a while.

I think Reyna will just become a free agent, I doubt they could sell him. Who knows.

For all of my affections for MDS , we have to be frank and say that a significant portion of his signings when he had that one year to himself were underperforming to out right poor. Axel is going to be cleaning out a lot of them which means, MDS will likely get sent packing too. I can not see him being the guy starting the 2021 season and it may even happen sooner. Axel is going to want to start over with his scouting and his coach and so forth. He won't want to wear any stink although he will end up getting his own stink from working for this owner.

And then he will hit the good old cement ceiling and be in a spot too.

In saying that, even with owners who loathe spending beyond the money MLS provides in salary cap, allocation, etc; they can do a hell of a lot better with proper scouting and decision making. We shall see how this unfolds.

HIB is gone to Rubin Kazan but I think we are going to see several more on the move. Adnan will be moving and they should get a good return for him. Though I think Reyna has cachet, I agree that he's probably moving at the end of his contract on a free transfer. The only reason Montero is still here is that he has zero interest from elsewhere so he will be just cashing in on the final year of his deal then try to make it in business. Four guys on the move, Milinkovic rent to own will probably not happen, so he'll be gone, Dajome is here because he's Reyna's replacement. Bair will want to try it overseas and will discover that he will actually have to work his ass off if he wants to see the bench let alone the field.

Next year, the big positive from the Whitecaps is that the Canadian Premier League will get to see some new talent join their ranks, so welcome Baldisimo and Metcalfe while Facchineri's loan to Ottawa will be permanent. Some newbies will join Colyn and Pencile on the bench.

Oh yeah, another point I agree with: Schuster will replace MDS and with his guy
