He has to be the one of the most valuable players in the world. Maybe only Mbappe is worth more? There is a huge drop off between Van Dijk and the next best centerback in the world. We have a team full of world class players, but Van Dijk is the one we can least afford to lose. He could never be replaced. Remember that Man United tried to sign their own Van Dijk and ended up with Harry McGuire.
Agreed. The point of the article was that not only is VVD an excellent player, not only has he improved Liverpool out of all recognition, but that he’s so good, such a team player, that the improvement he has wrought is outsized, out of sync perhaps with the influence of one player. Therefore, bearing in mind that he radically will improve any side he might sign for, it makes trying to put a valuation on him very difficult. The Guardian has said £150m, but, as I say, I disagree, but don’t know what the number is.
It also depends on the situation. When Liverpool sold Coutinho for a similar fee, it ended up improving us at the end of the day because we had major holes to fill in the squad and the money could be reinvested. If the current Liverpool team were to sell Van Dijk, what would we possibly use the 150 million for? We would first need to replace him with an inferior player, and it’s hard to imagine how the extra money could be used to improve anywhere else. At least if we sold one of the front 3, we could go out and sign another brilliant (perhaps younger player) who could do similar things on the pitch. Van Dijk (and Alisson fits into this category as well) is a one in a kind talent. I would argue he is the most important player Liverpool have, and maybe even the most important player in all of Europe.
It’s also comforting to know that when Man United and Chelsea start splashing cash around trying to catch up to us, they could never sign a Van Dijk, because there are no other Van Dijks. Harry McGuire is clearly not Van Dijk. There are no other Alissons. Chelsea found that out when they bought Kepa one week later. Good luck finding another Trent. Good luck finding a Fabinho. Good luck finding another Bobby Firmino. We are back at the top, and even infinite amounts of money might not be enough to knock us off our perch.
Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign Timo Werner https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/02/16/liverpool-are-in-advanced-talks-to-sign-timo-werner/
Liverpool are now in position to break £60million pattern this summer https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spo...ool-fsg-financial-position-transfers-17749287
As mentioned elsewhere, we're linked to Norwich's 21 yr old central midfielder Todd Cantwell. New links to Talles Magno, a 17 yr old from Vasco da Gama. He can play across the front 3, scored multiple goals in Brazil's u17 world cup win. Vasco is having some financial trouble and we're going to take advantage of that. Our Brazilian trio gives us the edge, apparently.
I posted this in the Norwich game thread as well - as there is some talk of Todd Cantwell interest... My take on Cantwell: He is a decent, young player. He can certainly improve and he would certainly improve under Klopp. But he is not likely to replace any of our current "starters" in midfield - which includes Hendo, Gini, AOC, Fab, or Keita... Cantwell would be a good replacement for Milner, who he would portably benefit from tremendously just by being around him... So - if he is available at a reasonable cost, and he wants to come here as an understudy to Millie, and fight for playing time over the next five years...he is welcome... It's too bad Emre Can moved on, we could have a starting midfield of Can on the right and Cantwell on the left... ...I know, I know...when do we play again?!
There is also Curtis Jones. If you truly believe he has a future at Liverpool, there is no point in signing someone like Cantwell.
That was my point. Is Cantwell genuinely better than Jones? So much do that we’d spend money on him? It may well be true but it takes a lot of convincing especially for the fee he’s likely to command.
Jones is an 18 year old talent. How many 18 year olds have made an impression in the first team over a couple appearances and then not panned out? Talent needs to be stockpiled at the youth levels. Especially given Milner is 30-something and now Hendo is approaching 30-something with a hamstring tear to his name. Cantwell has proven to be a productive PL'er - no harm in signing him.
I don't think it has to be either or as far as these young players. Lallana is leaving possibly Shaqiri . Milner is approaching mid 30's . Jones is a great prospect and I'll argue if Cantwell was in our reserves we'd be raving about him as a top prospect too. We'll certainly need more than one mf addition in the near future be it Cantwell ,Kai Havertz or whoever.
Didn’t we sign some player named Minimoto recently. Has he left already. Or was that just an investment.
If that is true I say let's do it Timo Werner’s release clause that can be triggered before the end of April is actually much lower than the £51m that has been widely speculated, with the clause only £25m + performance based add ons. Liverpool are looking to Anderlecht's Jeremy Doku as the long-term successor to Sadio Mane. We're scouting Ben White, Brighton's young CB that is on-loan at Leeds right now. Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Everton remain interested in signing Trabzonspor’s Turkish goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, 23. Liverpool ‘have joined the rest of the Premier League’s Big Six in pursuit of’ Jude Bellingham with the England under-17 international ‘certain to be off in the summer for £30m plus’. More links with Werner, apparently he we can get him for less than the 50m release clause in April...
I don't think Minimino fits in the same spot as Jones or Cantwell... In my opinion, only sign Cantwell if he is willing to fight for a spot and potentially lose some playing time in our midfield, and only sign him if "the price is right" - no reason to "break the bank" on him...
I can however think of many reasons why just being Premier League regular isn’t a justifiable reason to sign somebody.. You’ve probably seen more of Cantwell than I have and you seem persuaded. I’ll take that.
He's a 21 yr old with 8 goals and 6 assists from central midfield for a (soon-to-be) relegated team. The kid has talent - he's not Mark Noble And we've had a pretty good record of signing players from relegated clubs recently.
Heard an interesting snippet from a usually reliable source regarding Shaqiri. Klopp rates him and wants to keep him. He sees him as a perfect game-changer from the bench (with occasional starts), not too dissimilar to AOC. Shaqiri wants to start (who doesn't?) but understands the pecking order and is happy enough, just about, to play as 12-13-14 man. But, and this is where will all hinge upon apparently, his injuries. The story is that Klopp and the club brass now need to be convinced via tests and so on, that he has been unlucky this season with injuries and not injury prone; they need be further convinced that he will be fit mostly. If so, then there's a place for him in the squad. FWIW.
Diego Carlos' former coach is in the media touting him to Liverpool after we were linked with him over the winter. For those of you with short memories, he plays for Sevilla, has a ~70m release clause, and was purchased last summer for just 12.5m.
