These type of idiots are unavoidable. If you do not have entertainment options you will not attract a tax base to pay for your schools.
Decent message. Bad messengers. I'm OK with having the opinion that there are more important things to worry about than building a stadium for a soccer team and improving downtown so more people will spend money. If I wasn't a fan, I might be making that argument myself. But framing the argument in such a way that you're basically telling tens of thousands of people "Hey, you know that thing you're really passionate about? F*** it and f*** you." isn't exactly going to win you a lot of popularity contests.
I discovered this a few weeks ago, and had a conversation with a couple of non-BigSoccer users about it. The consensus was that this group should be partnering with people rather than burning bridges. That said, best of luck to them on their mission.
KC, do you know the messengers? Not personally, I mean (though you might), I just wasn't sure if the people behind this did something else? I get your point, and I agree with it to an extent. But I don't think we are their audience. I think their audience is the vast majority of Columbus residents who aren't "passionate" about Columbus Crew. Did they say what was exactly "burning bridges" about this? Believe me, as someone who has been part of many different politically active protests and demonstrations many are cringeworthy. And this may be too. That's why I said I was curious to see it. It could go either way, cringeworthy or constructive. As someone who is passionate about sports, but also believes that billionaires like Truck Stop Jimmy don't exactly need any public support for stadiums, I'm sympathetic to their argument. It's just a matter of how they actually do this.
We didn't really go into tactical specifics, just how their chosen strategy of saying the two issues are mutually exclusive is an odd tack - it seems to be needlessly adversarial. A lot of the "rich and predominately white" folks they're talking down to could be in positions to advance their cause.
The more that I think about this - since you reminded me - I really want to go to it. Maybe weekend after next. I'll report back if I do.
The one issue I have with these arguments is the conflation made with city government and the school district. I've talked with city leaders from time to time (due to my then service on the Northland Community Council) and they come across as frustrated with the school district as they have little to no influence on the budget or tax levies there. The city does not run the schools. A bloated (IMHO) bureaucracy does. The difference in funding the city schools get is not that much different from what suburban schools get, per capita. And yes, I know there are challenges the city school have that aren't the same as in the suburbs. But it's badly run. The scandal from a few years ago indicates that.
Made the greatest purchase of my life today. I will only be answering to “big walnut” from here on out. Thx. pic.twitter.com/NkiK6ge44K— Rachel Bonnetta (@rachelbonnetta) February 23, 2020
I'll take the flip side of that and wish them the worst of luck on their mission since it's fundamentally a lie. While Columbus City Schools have lots of problems, they aren't caused by the stadium project or any other municipal spending. The schools are lavishly funded, spending about 40% more per pupil than the affluent Olentangy district. The problem is they are run for the benefit of insiders rather than students. They've been complaining for decades about the lack of air conditioning in some of the older buildings. They have plenty of money to fix the problem but spend huge amounts on unnecessary personnel.
Garnish wages, bank accounts, whatever the hell is within the arm of the law. Seems like she has cheated more than a few people. I used to do mediation for Summit County Small Claims Court. Greatly reduced court fees and such if we managed to get a judge-approved mediation agreement.
Could they not group together into a class action-type thing, or is that only for corporate negligence?
Funny to see this shirt come back around. I ended up with one way back when - I think @BG13 designed it, if I remember correctly? http://supportersupply.co/item/the-north-corner-unisex-t-shirt
That would seem to be the salient issue. Go ahead sue her. Get a court to award you seventy-leven gazillion dollars. I'm betting a lien on everything she owns will net you exactly dick. And youd have to pay a lawyer out of your pocket since a contingency fee would be equally worthless.
