    Ah, goalpost moved.

Since anyone that had a cup of coffee in an MLS academy fits in the third category, I presume, now you are probably right.

The number of players actively playing in MLS in the roster for the 2022 WC should be 0-5. That is how fast things are going.

Konrad De La Fuente is not a Barcelona player, is he?

The problem with Long is that his weaknesses get exploited against better competition. He is a liability with the ball at his feet.

Our best CB is not great when confronted with fast shifty dribblers. We aren't good enough to have complete players so the question is how they fit together.

Brooks foot skills matches well with a fast CB partner, even if that partner doesn't have great ball skills.

If Gregg is going to persist with the possession game, and I can't imagine he won't, he is going to have to drop Long. Long has been hidden in some games by being next to Brooks or Ream, and once with Miazga. But when he is next to another that can't distribute at a high level, like Zimmerman, it makes the whole thing move slow and lethargic.

Didn't see enough of McKenzie and I'm not sure he can defend, but he hits a good pass. Hopefully, Philly plays the season where he has to do that regularly.

That faster, more agile partner should be the much more experienced and well rounded Alvarado.

by all means, bring him in but there’s no guarantee that he’s an improvement.

Are you confusing FC Barcelona for just the gameday roster of the senior team?

The discussion I was having with another poster was concerning player development.

He plays a bigger role on a top team in a better league.

Besides that, he has improved significantlyin the last 4+ years since he played for the usmnt. He has the same physical tools, but much more experience at a higher level and is actually comfortable on the ball. I'd suspect a well rounded defender would be a noticable upgrade to Long.

if he werent an MLS player, fans on here would be going nuts about his mistakes and times getting beat by Venezuela, Mexico, Uruguay, and Canada.

You are having a separate conversation. MLS is flawed in its development of players. It can be over come if they get out by 18 to 20. Those that move at 22 to 24 have an up hill battle. Beyond that, there isnt much interest and their games taper off.

Lumping a kid that spent a year or two in an academy in with a 27 yo MLS lifer is crazy. To think just throwing some kids out on the field for a year is going to solve the developmental issue the league has had forever at the 18 yo to 23 yo is even crazier.

players that dont make it Barcelona and those that do is a very wide margin in terms of talent. I suspect we will see the same with former MLS academy players and MLS lifers, but the talent gap will be in the other direction.

The only reason to try to include former MLS academy players is the MLS fans like to take credit for anything they possibly can. it will be interesting to come back to this in a few years. I think a much larger percentage if foreign based players will come near expectations than those that stay on MLS.

Even if he's not better Long, the team is short on more mobile centerbacks, all of Brooks, Ream and Miazga are likely better with a more mobile partner and the options are limited. He definitely deserves a call up and a real chance show what he can do.

This isn't supported by the history of the modern US National Team.

If one is thinking of development then this makes perfect sense. FCD greatly facilitated Chris Richards's pathway to Bayern, even though he spent little time with FCD.

Not sure what this follows from. Dempsey, Holden, McBride, and Cameron all left the league mid-career age or older.

18-23 dev was never a big problem. Producing 18-year-olds who were ready to step onto the biggest stages was. American soccer culture and MLS looked to have mainly overcome this problem. The important aspect is for players to be at the right clubs, whether they are in MLS or in Europe.

He has gotten 17 caps. That is a real chance to show what he can do. This is just another example of trying to force a limited MLS player into the USMNT lineup.

The person who deserves a call up to show what he can do is Alvarado. The way fans talked about him in 2015 was disgusting. Those same fans are campaigning for Long and treating him as an auto starter. Let him be filled in the 4th to 6th CB spot which is consistent with his talent. The smart thing to do would be to accept he is who is instead of making believe he is something he isnt and fast tracking the young, athletic CBs coming up.

Long's transfer travails could be playing on his mind and his performances. Right now, imo, Ike Opara is the CB in the program. I'd like to see him get a cap. Not sure what the issue is with Alvarado.

Charles Boehm - FC Dallas wants to sign Reggie Cannon to a "big deal".

    https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020...-cannon-big-deal-says-team-president-dan-hunt

Boehm added a comment on Twitter about transfer interest in Cannon:

Yes, definitely. Two EPL/Champ clubs reportedly inquired about him over the winter. Questions are 1) meeting work permit requirements and 2) usual challenge of finding balance between financial security and freedom of movement over the next couple years

Cannon is stuck in that 80K-100K range like so many MLS fullbacks. Since Cannon has avoided the temptation of an early contract extension for this long, it's difficult to see FC Dallas winning him over now unless they offer him 7 figures IMO.

Giving a fullback a 7 figure deal for a team in a low salary capped league which is near the bottom in attendance would be funny.

Then again, FCD advertises coming to see other teams rather than their own. So.

Good to get confirmation, as I'd read claims no one had been interested.

FCD want to get a transfer fee. Nothing wrong with that.

$400k-$600k would make Cannon one of the highest paid fullbacks in the league.

How good is this guy? Can't say I've seen much of him...twitter was abuzz with all touch videos with his performance against CR. I watched the first half of that game, and thought he was exceedingly average. I was happy to watch the all touch, thinking maybe I was wrong or the 2nd half was much better, but it was a big "meh" as well.

Assuming this is one bottom PL team and top half Champ team, I guess that gives me an idea of where he's at. Guess I'm wondering then, why people want him as a starter over Yedlin or Antonee (assuming Dest is either at LB or RB)? Assuming it's more of the "flavor of the month"?

Cannon? He's the second best right back in the team.

Big news for moving guys out of MLS. This might make the difference for the likes of Aaron Long.

Does this count regarding transfers within the league?

I’m not a FC Dallas fan, but I’d love to see them build an empire based on selling youths across the league (and abroad as well). To the point, other teams; think... man. We should be doing what they’re doing.

I mean, honestly, if we had 30 FC Dallas academies... I’m not saying we’d be Brazil, Argentina, Spain, England, France, or Germany.

But we might be the next Belgium, Netherlands, Croatia, Portugal, Colombia, Uruguay, Mexico, Switzerland, or Italy.

At least, be like or have the edge on Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Serbia, Chile, Paraguay, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, South Korea, Japan, Tunisia, Morocco, Ghana, Wales, Ireland Republic, Ukraine, Austria, Russia, Venezuela, Peru, Australia, Senegal, Ecuador, and Czech Republic.

If we had 20 FCD-level academies we'd be Brazil, Spain, France, Germany. :)

Right now, we have only 3-4.
