CONCACAF with yet another format change. This time everyone in Central America is put in the CONCACAF league and despite this being a ko format 6 teams move on to the 2020 CONCACAF champions league. Somehow in CONCACAF world it makes sense that two quarterfinalist that lose to move on to the CCL but two that lose don’t move on this region is such a mess.

Last night Santa Tecla started things off with a loss to Real Esteli in Nicaragua.

I am not even surprised anymore that we are losing to Esteli. Credit to them for improving but our league is a mess and shows no signs of improving.

5-1 a dominant game outside of that one slip up that led to the loan SF goal. I’m going to nitpick but that lackadaisical reaction in the back is what has rooted itself into the NT as well and I would hope coaches put more of an effort to downsize that weakness.

Yeah this Tecla team doesn’t seem close to the ones that could actually challenge for a title. Especially if last season was an indicator of things to come.

Alianza advance as well but in much more impressive fashion. They beat San Francisco (Panama) 6-1 on aggregate even winning the away leg tonight 1-0. They face Tauro of Panama next. They also had a good run in Copa Premier so it’s good they are doing well but Oscar Ceren should be abroad by now

Benji Villalobos had a blinder , Aguila should have lost game by more.
Alianza should have scored more goals but Juan Carlos Portillo just took the wrong option. Hopefully the two goal buffer is enough, because they are clearly one of the best sides in Central America

Pretty bleak showing only Alianza advance to the quarterfinals where even if they lose to San Carlos they might still be one of two losing teams to advance to the CL because that somehow makes sense to people at Concacaf.

    On aggregate final results
San Carlos 4-2 Santa Tecla on penalties. Tecla had a chance to win but didn’t finish well
    Saprissa 2-1 Aguila
    Tauro 1-2 Alianza

    Few key points
Salvadoran team continue to struggle in penalty shootouts, Roberto Dominguez chose the worst time to try a paneka.
Aguila attacked strongly but sadly couldn't get that second goal, Fernando Castillo was outstanding and he shown the form was getting scouted by foreign team before that injury hit him.
Alianza did enough without being outstanding.

Alianza now play Santa Tecla conquerors San Carlos in the quarterfinal.

Alianza beat San Carlos on aggregate 2-1 move on to the semifinals and qualified to the CCL.

They will play Motagua next. This is the most impressive run since Metapan’s in my opinion. They have taken out two teams from Panama and 1 from Costa Rica. Motagua has taken out Managua and Waterhouse in unimpressive fashion so it’s possible they could make the final but it won’t be easy since Motagua hosts the second game

Even if Alianza get stomped in the 2nd match I’m very proud of this win at home.

Alianza did a great job of holding on, did have some luck on their side too. Gotta play better in Monterrey to somehow, someway get a result

in my opinion this is the new best run ever by any of our clubs in the CCL era. They lose away 4-2 to Tigres. 4-5 on aggregate.

I felt he flopped at first, but seeing the footage again it was a weak foul call but refs are going to call it against C.A. clubs. It sucks that they still can’t defend a set piece to save their lives and this translates to the NT.

All in all they did get punched in the mouth and responded so kudos to them.

After losing this way last time to Olimpia I was curious to see how they would respond this cycle to their credit they did well but it is amazing they lose at the very end again like this. The defense on the set play was pathetic though three guys completely unmarked right in front of goal
