One problem is that Yedlin's feisty speed has yielded relatively little, at least on offense. According to Wiki, he has 3 goals since joining NU in 2016. I was unable to find his assist numbers on that page. Due to his lack of ball skill, he does not combine well with his teammates. (Manquillo is better in this area). His crosses are also subpar, lacking pace, curve and/or dip. With all that said, I wish him the best. I wish I were making his kind of cash.
3 goals, 10 assists over 110 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle. Manquillo has 0 goals and 5 assists in 56 appearances for Newcastle. Manquillo fares a little bit better on the minutes/assist front, with one every 832 minutes versus one every 866 minutes for Yedlin. Over the course of a 3,420-minute league season, that works out to Manquillo getting 0.17 more assists per season than Yedlin.
Thanks. I just looked it up (and I should have done it before), he has 2 goals and 5 assists in 99 PL appearances. Edit: ArsenalMetro's post above is more informative.
I can't speak to his play independently, but he basically walked into the starting role in August, played himself out of it after 5 starts, and has 149 minutes in the league since October. So, Steve Bruce thinks he's been poor, at least.
Newcastle and Sunderland are famous for bad signings. Out of the Top 50 Worst EPL Signings, I think those two make for near half. There's a reason for that: you have to take big risks and pay big fees and salaries to get anyone to move to that area of England. You'll be happier basically anywhere else.
Its really not that bad, Newcastle is quite a nice city, and the surrounding coast and countryside is really picturesque. But most foreign players want to live in or near London, or for one of the Manchester or Merseyside powerhouses. So generally it takes a larger pay packet to get them to the North East.
Because, like most American players, he has a relatively limited skillset (with little likelihood of adding much to it at this age) who, like most American players, is hard-working, mentally as well as physically brave, willing to learn, low-maintenane and consistent. For a club as badly run as Newcastle's Front Office has made then, that's quite a catch.
And the shopping is much, much better in London, Manchester and Cheshire (where the Manchester and Liverpool players live). That doesn't influence the players too much but it does influence their WAGs, which has, shall we say, an impact on the players
All I know of Newcastle I learned by watching Michael Caine's Get Carter: "Get Carter was a successful experiment in moving British film locations out of the social bubble of London; furthermore, its subsequent position as a gem in the British crime drama genre underscored the value in social and geographical diversity. It thus encouraged film makers from all reaches of the British Isles to consider making a movie about their home town, just as Get Carter paid a somewhat depressing homage to Newcastle‑upon‑Tyne. Indeed, it is hard to escape the feeling that the city of Newcastle plays as an important a part in the film as does Michael Caine. Its foreboding, narrow Victorian streets appear to constrict around the anti‑hero, trapping him as an unwilling prisoner, which mirrors the game of ‘cat‑and‑mouse’ that characterises Carter’s search for the truth behind his brother’s untimely death. As we view, piecemeal, the degeneration of the city, we see Carter’s descent into an increasingly violent, sadistic and corrupt way of life ..." https://www.getcarter.xyz/the-film/
Even if it is true that Manquillo combines better with his teammates, that is not NUFC's game - getting goals out of build-up from FBs. NUFC is exposed often and a back with recovery speed and less mental lapses is important to them as well. Yedlin is not the picture of concentration, but to my eye seems to tune out less than Manquillo. And, of course, my eye does not matter. It seems Bruce (and Rafa before him) tend to see it the same way, which is all that matters for a healthy DY. I'm not claiming DY is Cafu, just that he is overall marginally more useful to NUFC than Manquillo is.
Any event, Manquillo contract up this summer. Unclear if he stays. Conversation to "be had" sez Bruce.
The weather, and it's an area that has been in economic decay for 30 years. It's also known as depression central. Probably because of the weather. Humans are not made to live under dark gray skies 80% of the year. https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/most-depressed-place-north-east-12919690
Since moving to England he's been a starter under Sam Allardyce and Rafa Benitez, two quite different but equally meticulous and detail-oriented coaches. Those are qualities that aren't normally associated with Steve Bruce teams. Perhaps Yedlin's been benched because he's expecting more from Bruce than the guy is able to deliver and it's become noticeable on the training ground. It wouldn't be the first time in football. In any case, if he is on the move in the summer, with his record under Big Sam and Rafa, he'll get offers from EPL/EPL-equivalent sides. Just not from the big ones.
Indeed, few such tattooed-players are as low-maintenance. Please send my best to everyone at Gleeson's.
But when has Yedlin been benched? I can off hand only think of one, maybe two games he did not play when he was healthy this year, maybe 3 or 4 he only subbed in. Did I miss a stretch when he sat?
Lazaro got a red card in the waning minutes of this one. Yedlin might actually have a shot at playing next weekend.
He spent the full 90 on the bench. Lozaro got a red card for DOGSO in stoppage time, so he's out for next Saturday's match v. Burnley.
Not starting again for their FA Cup match. Seems to be in the dog house. I would love to see him change leagues. Italian league would be great
