Watching Channel 9 News this morning and saw a commercial for this and immediately jumped on BS to see if it was true. Woo hoo!
Here's a rando question for anyone who has Hulu for their cable: is anyone else NOT seeing Fire ads during soccer broadcasts? I'll be watching a Euro game and everyone on Twitter will be commenting on seeing Fire ads on the broadcast, but none of them ever end up on my TV. Oh, and btw... .@arlowhite slipped this photo in his Instagram story this morning. #cf97 pic.twitter.com/im58Pdir91— Patrick McCraney (@patrickmccraney) February 20, 2020
Top/first two comments on a column about Fire on WGN "For those of us who can't stretch the budget any further (thanks for nothing, Ricketts), it's a little something to soothe the sting of losing Cubs broadcasts." "Since i cannot watch the cubs anymore on WGN i will now watch the Fire." https://www.robertfeder.com/2020/02/19/back-play-play-wgn-air-chicago-fire-soccer-broadcasts/ This is exactly why free OTA broadcast are so important, and why it is important for the Fire to be on free TV. The Cubs are a major baseball brand because of WGN, not from winning baseball in the 60s,70s,80s or 90s.
I want one of those "backwards logo" shirts . It would be the only abomination-wear that I would own. (yes, I know it was shot in a mirror) It would go great with the Chicago Fire jacket that I purchased on E-Bay a few years ago (at the depths of the Andrew Hauptman/Frank Yallop dystopia) where the logo is upside down. When I complained the the seller, the seller tried to convince me that it was correct. Ultimately, I agreed and I proudly wear it whenever I am bit chilly at a game and particularly sour about the Chicago Fire.
Marty on twitter is saying the rumor is that he'd be doing "about a half dozen" games this season when he's not covering the Prem for NBC. Between him and Bennett, it's always been amusing seeing British soccer media guys who became Bears fans... poor bastards.
Was really good soccer player at my old HS, St Viator. Stood a sound chance of being a good pro soccer player. Never played football until before crossing over for his senior year. Was good enough after one season to get a ride to U of Miami as a running back. Always thought his playing in MLS would have been a sizable boost for the league, back when its survival was not a given. At least we got a supporter at WGN.
Oh I know , he was a good player . I seem to remember another St Viator at the time that was possibly better.. why am I thinkin Nino.. didn't the fire get him through P40 ?!?! * edit nino da Silva.. I don't know why I thought he played for us. He played for kc.
Dan(hole) Kelly vs Arlo White? C'mon, pinch me! Would be unreal if it happens and I actually think it might. Talk about buzz.
With the exception of the re-brand, I feel like there is this “wow, this is so amazing!” feeling spreading around Fire World. The thing is, it’s not that amazing. It is competence and it is the thing that has been missing for over a decade. To be honest, I didn’t thing that Dan Kelly was a horrible hire at the time, but a season in, competent management would have thought, “well that didn’t work,” and would have adjusted. Competent management would have said, “why don’t we go get a guy or gal with actual soccer play by play experience who has been generally well liked by soccer tv audiences.” That would be Arlo White or someone similar. Hopefully, in a year or two, these decisions will only be seen as, “okay, good idea. It’s nice to have competent people running the club.”
Him hitting 50% accuracy seems about right lately... I agree with you on the need to cut bait after what seemed like a decent idea not working out (see, Paunovic, Vjelko), but with the league approaching 30 teams, the days of just being able to pick up JP Dellacamera with his weekends free are mostly over, so easier said than done. Seeing as though the team will still need a PBP guy for the majority of their broadcasts, I'd still rather they pick a professional PBP guy even if he's not a pure soccer commentator and let him grow into the roll like Mark Followill in Dallas than follow the trend of "just pick any British guy" that seems the trend in MLS.
I can't be the only person who does not like Arlo White, can I? He is better than Dan Kelly but I still don't like either of them as play by play announcers.
Oh, damn you and your insistence on "competence." It is clear that you have taken a few years off from the Fire. Next, I suppose you will say "Results, motherf*ckers!" like we should expect results or something. Beware or Nelson Rodriguez will call you a wallower.
The old lady at the comic book shop that I hang out at is a major Cubs fan. She also said that she'd watch Fire games over Cubs games because the Fire were on WGN and the Cubs aren't.
God, I used to hate playing against Spector. I played the game if my life in the final of Best of the Midwest. I had a first half hat trick and we lost to Sockers 5-3. I cant remember if he scored 4 or all 5. I think that team accounted for like 75% of our losses that year. Edit: he used to be a forward or winger. I cant remember.
The Cubs are moving everything to their new network, Marquee. I've never seen one. Hulu doesn't sell local cable ads, as far as I know.
