Germany or Kentucky... same difference: Louisville City FC signs 16-year-old left back Jonathan Gómez.📝: https://t.co/CrzTL08dB5#LouCity | @jonathang_42 pic.twitter.com/Q1pdgabWut— Louisville City FC (@loucityfc) March 5, 2020
usl giving first team minutes to 16 year old kids for a year or two until they go to europe works for me
I watched the Louisville City game today and Jonathan Gomez came on around the 80th minute. He didn't do much (neither did the rest of his team), but the kid is built like Weston McKennie. He's big and sturdy. Also, while he's listed as a defender, he came on at left mid (the 5th and final sub for Louisville). Took a knock in a collision with the Pittsburgh keeper a few minutes after entering that seemed to affect him.
'03 Jonathan Gomez is currently at the training ground of FC Midtjylland in Denmark, according to his Instagram. He has also trained at various Bundesliga clubs. Certainly hope the Louisville City and USYNT player will be in Europe before long.— ChuckMe92 Soccer (@ChuckMe92Soccer) November 15, 2020
sporting b to be specific Interesting #LouCity news this morning:The Portuguese press has picked up on 17-year-old outside back Jonathan Gomez’s Instagram stories, which showed him yesterday at Sporting Club de Portugal’s (Sporting Lisbon) training ground outside of Lisbon.https://t.co/kZ63yaJBp1— Daniel Karell (@DanKarellVille) December 4, 2020
Had some additional trials this window: This offseason, @jonathang_42 trialed with a trio of first division clubs in Europe with an eye toward a bright future."He’s gathering more experience while at the same time coming in super motivated to make that next step."🔗 https://t.co/gfSwhjRjbV pic.twitter.com/C6Y2f7mmJc— Louisville City FC (@loucityfc) February 4, 2021 The showings landed Gomez offseason opportunities to trial at first division side FC Midtjylland in Denmark, plus top-level clubs Sporting CP and FC Porto in Portugal. Gomez’s older brother, Johan, is under contract with the latter. He turns 18 on Sept. 1st.
Still looking to go to Europe: So far, the young fullback has trained with FC Midtjylland, Freiburg, Sporting CP, Werder Bremen and Porto, where his older brother Johan currently plays. Due to the coronavirus, he's been unable to train with Real Sociedad, Holstein Kiel, Chivas de Guadalajara and Lille, but they've all remained in touch. Manchester City have made contact, Borussia Dortmund have watched him play and PSV scouted him during his time with the U.S. U-17s. https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/dif...-city-dortmund-move/wnn80idl8jth15j2rzgtuzyer
Is this kind of round-robin training common at all? I've never heard of a player of any age going around to so many different clubs on training stints. And, further, most of those are pretty good clubs.
Because Porto worked out so well for his brother. He's a better prospect but Porto churns through prospects like butter. He's got a huge uphill battle there.
I will quote myself after re-reading this post weeks later to give myself a partial answer. Yes, round robin training happens--but that I have only heard of it with players at very low levels. I think that the Jay Demerit movie describes this, if memory serves me. But that was in like the 7th division in England.
Top U.S. youth prospects have generally been able to get good trials at big clubs, perhaps not in this number, but certainly more than one. It's probably a bit easier now because of some degree of vogue for young American players, or at least the marketplace's determination that they are in some degree of vogue, if there's a difference. In Gomez's case he was likely helped by the fact that clubs know he's a top prospect in his age group, already a professional (no chance he decides to go to college or put off a decision for other reasons) and comparatively cheap.
https://www.loucity.com/news_article/show/1165470 A bright future begins now for JoGo!@jonathang_42 has been called up to train with the Mexican National Team ➡️ https://t.co/K80wOY73ru pic.twitter.com/iExXEFt7Kn— Louisville City FC (@loucityfc) May 24, 2021 Big news..... Gonzalez has been called up to the Senior Mexican NT to train as they prepare for the CONCACAF Nations League. Gonzalez is also keeping his options open......... Let me say this, thanks to ESPN+ I have watched all Lou City’s matches this season. This past weekend was his second start to the season after his European training stint and he was absolutely fantastic. He bossed the entire left side of the field attacking and defending for 90 minutes against San Diego Loyal who feature numerous former MLS players. This kid won’t be in Louisville at the end of the summer. You can clearly see his destined for Europe. I hope the USMNT is paying attention.
