So, $1,315 billion at least in prizes, if this is correct. At least 65 times as big total prize fund as now. Wow. Clearly why Karl-Heinz likes this.
Logistically it seems difficult since some teams won't know until 2 weeks ahead of time whether they will qualify for the tournament.
We should have more clarity after the FIFA Council meeting (now call) on March 20: https://www.fifa.com/who-we-are/news/fifa-council-meeting-to-be-held-via-video-conference I would expect them to nail down qualifying soon.
According to this it’s coronavirus related: https://www.beinsports.com/en/football/news/fifa-cancels-planned-council-meeting-in-asunc/1416576

Has to be said: not a good look for Conmebol to fall out with Concacaf (so far) and FIFA if they want a realistic shot at 2030.
UEFA poised to back new 'summer Champions League' starting NEXT YEAR with International Champions Cup set to be ramped up to rival FIFA's 24-team Club World Cup: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...ns-League-set-rival-FIFAs-Club-World-Cup.html How would CONCACAF react to a UEFA branded competition in its territory? The CAF Super Cup was played in the AFC this year (Doha) but that is a single match.
It gets played as a 7-team tournament in December? Hey, maybe all this was @It's called FOOTBALL playing the long game the whole time No way in hell FIFA gets away with hosting an expanded CWC and the WC finals in the same year.
In case anyone hasn't heard yet, the 2021 expanded CWC has been delayed: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...-2021-world-cup-dates-infantino-idUSKBN21434F Since Infantino won't drop the idea it makes sense now to delay it until 2025. Until then I hope we get two more editions in the current format for 2020 and 2021.
According to this FIFA wants to hold the expanded CWC in the summer of 2022 followed by Qatar 2022 in November: https://www.marca.com/futbol/futbol-internacional/2020/06/23/5ef0cd8f268e3ec6198b45a2.html I'm sure this will go down well with a number of parties.
No scheduling decision yet on the expanded CWC: https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/fi...n1acF-jW4M0EgPIMhiZ61fB_zaBUNwcu8P0m02RKU4CxG
For me I am of the mindset that the CWC won't really benefit any of the teams there because it is basically just like Champions League but with major differences. I would rather watch Champions League football.
AFC unveils extended 2023 Asian Cup dates to cope with Chinese travel: http://www.insideworldfootball.com/...ded-2023-asian-cup-dates-cope-chinese-travel/ With China hosting the 2023 Asian Cup I don't see how the expanded CWC can be played until 2025. Can't really fit it into 2022 with the Qatar winter World Cup. Unless you change hosts for 2023. But even then you have three nations cups being played in the summer of 2023: - Asian Cup (China) - AFCON (Ivory Coast) - Gold Cup (USA) In the summer of 2024 you of course have the Euros and Copa America. So that leaves 2025. @Paul Calixte - can you please change the thread title to "Expanded FIFA Club World Cup - Postponed", or something to that effect.
Can it be squeezed-in before the 2023 AFC cup? The UEFA CL final would need to be played one week earlier than usual (i.e. last Saturday of May), which would be difficult given the winter break necessitated by the 2022 WC.
