What's your take on USMNT preference for MLS?

What makes no sense is having a position that MLS players aren't good enough AND supporting a player who couldn't even make an MLS squad as good enough for the NT. The two statements together make no sense hence my overreaching point that people totally overvalue middling European leagues.

The fact he's playing well in the SPL is a sign of how terrible the SPL is and that MLS is clearly a better league. The dude went from not able to make 18's in MLS (and btw LAFC has been looking for a LB... they signed Palacios from Willem II) to one of the best LBs in another league.

Ignore SPI. Ignore Transfermarkt values. Ignore the UEFA coefficient that has known power league Cyprus ahead of Scotland. Ignore all facts. Hamalainen is great now because he plays in (enter any league) in Europe.

Context matters here. January camp sees plenty of MLS players that are long shots. This camp should see plenty of Euro players that are long shots.

Lalas can be an idiot at times, but he's frankly correct here. I've yet to hear a good counter-argument to this point; just people who don't know better being unable to wrap their mind around the idea that club form is not always an indicator of NT performance. If it were, Fabian Johnson would've been an all-time great based on his club pedigree, not someone who was basically as good for the NT as MLS lifers like Graham Zusi and Gyasi Zardes over the same period.

Tim Chandler (whom Lalas was talking about specifically) has historically had trouble translating his club form to the NT, plus there's enough reason to doubt his commitment to the team to justify not calling him, IMO.

Well, Fabian Johnson did have an excellent Word Cup for us, truly one of our standout players in Brazil so I'm not sure he's a great argument that good club players don't necessarily translate. He fell off the radar through injuries and now age and ongoing fragility so I am actually quite fine with leaving him out now. But lets not rewrite history; he was a good player for us regularly and an excellent one when it mattered most. Zusi never, never played at right back at the level Johnson was able to bring in World Cup 2014. And Zardes? Sounds like really bending over backwards to discredit Johnson's performances, especially in big tournaments. Johnson was a monster in the Copa America Centenario as well.

Here's what was being said back in 2014 about Johnson:

Find me anyone who ever thought Zusi or Zadres was that type of player.

And really, we are going to say it doesn't matter how much a player has improved or what he's currently doing because we looked at him 5 years ago? At least bring the guy in and see if it translates instead of just assuming it doesn't translate. Considering Weah's return was cut short and Arriola just got taken out by injury, we could use an experienced guy to step into one of the wing positions. And here we have a US player really making his mark in a position of need. Or, should we just run out Corey Baird?

I get that a tam is more than a collection of the best players, but that's mostly due to positional needs. If your best 5 players are all strikers, you don't need them all. If you need a wing player and you have a wing player looking better than other wing players, that collection of players being more important than the best players line is a cop out.

these types of statements would have more credibility if the posters who voiced them don’t go ape-s*** if a player in a lesser league than MLS gets time or even mentioned.

Honestly, its just a shame that fans of the team are willing to tear down the accomplishments of guys who showed up big for us in multiple high profile events in the past to push an agenda. I'm fine with differences of opinion and I can understand having the opinion that Chandler wouldn't be a good fit for this team. But, you don't have to throw a guy who served the team well in the past under the bus to make that point.
