For anyone who says it’s not a big deal that there’s no sponsor so far, take a look at the yellow jerseys on the Crew tonight. They look like a low quality pub league side.
I could careless what their clothes looked like, I just want to see Ws! Crew won and I'm happy. In two years no where will it say the Crew won the Supporters Shield but with a little asterisk that says "ya but they didn't have a jersey sponsor". I'm tired of optics this or perception that. ALL that matters is winning and losing - that's it! It doesn't F'ing matter if there is accompany name on front of a jersey. STOP with this nonsense.
Uh, I hate to argue, but revenue is a pretty big deal too. Some might same making money is more important than winning games.
That depends. Others have commented that there are a bunch of teams that operate at a loss yet the value of the team continues to increase. I would concede that the former owner wouldn't be able to operate at a loss for long where our new owners could do it indefinitely.
I still do not understand being a huge fan of a team which has never existed, does not exist, has no players and no uniforms. These people are not celebrating a team, they're celebrating themselves and how cool they are.
Dude $2M is chump change for this ownership group. They are dropping multiples (100X) of that out of their pocket to buy team and build stadium. I'll repeat for YOU for the 10th time...ITS NOT A BIG DEAL!
$2M is probably what Dee gets paid in interest for one her checking accounts. People here getting bent out of shape for peanuts. The club is dropping money on the roster.
So wait. Are you saying that because the ownership group is worth billions - and are spending hundreds of millions - they're not interested in making any more money and spending less out of pocket?
I think what people are generally saying (and I probably shouldn’t interject myself here, but I grew up in New England and sometimes I just can’t help myself) is that the ownership group is placing more emphasis on the future seasons by ensuring those sponsors are lined up vs working harder in this season to solve the “optics issue”. They argue that the missing $2M in revenue is simply opportunity cost. Their argument of course, is based on the presumption that the FO isn’t even trying to find a 2020 jersey sponsor once it turned into a future deal. That can be dangerous and completely ignores your argument that is based on what I assume are a completely different set of assumptions. That the FO IS trying to still find a 2020 sponsor and that no one in Cbus is willing to pony up the $$. in reality, I think both camps are simultaneously right and wrong. Supporter’s summit ought to be awfully interesting.
I don't think he's saying that. Personally, I think there is a list of priorities to from what the team was when purchased to what the team can be. Things like hiring a FO staff. Hiring a game day staff. Cleaning mouse shit and mice from the stadium. Rebuilding relationships in the business community. Rebuilding relationships with fans. Getting a new stadium built. Permits for all these things. Hiring a new coach.Hiring a new staff for said coach. Bringing in new players. I'll stop here but finding a one year jersey sponsor is not the most important thing. Of course, we may even have one lined up but not announced.
I don't think I've ever been this disappointed about missing a Supporter's Summit. Y'all better post good notes.
Right. These guys all started rallying around a hypothetical team in late 2017 or 2018 that wont hit the field til 2021. That's a long time to just cosplay as real soccer fans even though there wasnt anything tangible to root for and wont be for another year yet. I used to always see Austin fans say things like "its nothing against Columbus". "We actually feel bad for Columbus, we're just grateful for and ready to embrace professional soccer here". If those types of sentiments were true, and every bodies having a f***ing blast creating some fake soccer culture around a team that wont exist til 3 or 4 years later....why isnt everyone an Austin Bold fan? If it's about embracing soccer and supporting "something" and enjoying the culture around it, why not do that for the first team that was announced and brought to the city, regardless of the play level. Is it because the Austin Bold owner was doing sketchy stuff to foil the MLS guys and prevent them from setting up shop?....because it's not like the "people" behind Austin FC are shining examples of integrity, ethics, and trustfulness either. All I see, yet to this day, are a bunch of people dressing up as soccer fans, who instead of supporting the initial soccer offerings available, a team with players and a soccer specific stadium that already exists right now, the majority of "fans" decided to wait for the other entity that would hopefully bring them a more fashionable brand, in a hipper location, with more name-drop worthy players. This is just my perception and maybe i dont understand something. Whatever. Enjoy the YETI shirts and Anthony Precourt Outdoorsman of the Year pictures.
I have a lot of criticisms of the douchebags from Austin... this was never one of them. If you're a fan of soccer, and you know you're getting a team, and you're going to get to watch pro soccer in your own town... why shouldn't you be excited? I was excited when I found out Columbus was getting a hockey team, and I wore an old-school CBJ jersey around for two-and-a-half years before the puck dropped.
Partly because Orlando CIty would be the Austin Aztecs of some such if they were really into grassroots soccer support. Orlando's owner ditched Austin for Orlando, played 3 seasons of USL ball then paid the fee to join MLS and built a really nice facility. He wanted to do that in Austin but couldn't figure out how to make it work, in part because of fan support. When did these Austin soccer fans become fans? It certainly wasn't 10 years ago. It comes down to are they really excited or are they just keen for some free gear and boosting their follower count?
Genuinely surprised to see Philadelphia Union bring Subaru into the fold as a naming sponsor for the stadium. A notoriously cheap team, with no history, no big names, and an owner worth much less than Truck Stop Jimmy, and who many Union fans wish would sell the team. Unsure whether this is good news for the league as a whole, or just that Philly is a bigger market and gets bigger names.
I hadn’t seen that yet and it saddens me immensely. Simply because I am the biggest Subaru homer ever and hate that they are now associated with that shit team.
well you could say the same about the sounders. THey of course had history but just before their ascent to MLS was mirred with empty stadiums. But i hate those bastards too.
