Just the Leicester effet. A team winning a trophy makes ppl draw all the wrong conclusions. To Southgate's credit he didn't really fall for it.
I was more thinking for the left back spot. What are the options? Chilwell has been very up and down this season, many of his recent games have been very error strewn. Rose is on a downward trajectory and he was never that good anyway. Shaw is Shaw, flakiness personified and with questionable commitment to the cause. Saka may not be the best defender in the world but for my money he's a level above them all attacking wise which is a key attribute in modern football for a fullback.
I really don't have a problem with Shaw. You wouldn't want him on your pub quiz team, but he's a very good attacking left-back.
Chillwell and rose or shaw not an issue imo chillwell is clear and obvious as is Trent on the right I bet awb could play lb in a pinch if we need to lock up the opposition rw
Alli shows signs but he’s a shadow of the player from a year or so ago Grealish was magnificent again yesterday. He was practically flawless His first touch , game management weight of pass , hold up play , vision was unmatched. He knows exactly when to speed up / slow things down I think the next England squad will be very telling because if Jack isn’t in there then it will confirm that Southgate is incompetent. I’d give the job to Chris Wilder
Can't see how he can be ignored. He will make the team. And if he performs he'll be in the plane this summer.
To be fair to Alli hes almost back to where he was 2 years ago. But I think Grealish is a more complete player anyway. Hes got a bit of everything. I understand why Southgate hasn't picked him before, But he should walk into the next squad.
I wouldn't mind trialling one of the other right backs as a potential left back, Reece James has shown himself to be very versatile in his career so I think he could manage it pretty easily. Lahm did very well for Germany as a makeshift left back for a good while. Chilwell will get in by default despite erratic form but Rose has no business being near the England side nowadays, I don't think he's even premier league quality anymore.
Alli might have pretty good numbers but the performances are still very average IMO, last 6 or 7 games he did next extremely little in open play
Alli just doesn't really fit in the system. If you play him deeper he never gets goals or assists and struggles to get on the ball, while his passing is average at best. I think the signs are Mount has the same problem if you push him into the midfield 3.
Alli and Ox are really good impact subs/rotation options in a tournament, if there are no more injuries.
Interesting that Lampard obviously sees Tomori as his fourth choice centre half at the moment. Can’t see Southgate calling him up anytime soon unless he can somehow get ahead of the other two.
I’ve been saying this since I saw mount and Alli Maddison and Graelish can work in a 433 because they are good passers, can dribbler through pressure and work hard rlc is another one capable
Thought this was interesting: Brandon Williams has played more premier league minutes this year (686) than Phil Foden has in his career (634).
Sancho has been Dortmunds best player tonight, better than mbappe and neymar. Gomez has looked solid for liverpool, trent has been pretty poor
