shocking to see the #7 Matildas play so bad at Olympic qualifiers as they only managed a tie at home vs #15 China. A last minute goal saved them but I've them look better in losses. Their slow offense, back passing style got often intercepted by the Chinese press who would go on immediate counter attack. The stats showed them taking 19 shots to the Matildas 15 as well as 7 vs 3 on target for them. They came with a full strength lineup(it was the coach's decision not to include the popular but older Devanna)
Australia vs. China PR - 13 February 2020 - Women Soccerway
at least the draw got them the easier semi final vs Vietnam(if they win that, they go to the Olympics). Those, two set games will only be played in March. They just announced two frinedlies with the US, but if they played just they did, they'll get promptly spanked!. Here is the full game, luckely China don't have the world class strikers

You know there's an actual thread for the qualifiers, right? You could at least stay on-topic and discuss the walloping in the Sydney derby. In what always seems to interest you, two Americans scored for SFC in a 3-0 win over WSW.

I’ve been told not welcome at the Olympic threat/gave up on finding the Matildas one after skimming past hundreds of dead threats that nobody’s interested any more.
Got the feeling your kinda angry cause it’s against the ‘World is catching up’ theory( which you’ve been an proponent of).
This game was a disaster(especially since the Chinese squad was quarantined, getting its practices in their hotels doorways) and can directly influence the league in terms of future $$$ investments in Aussie woso. That & a new story that came out that the men’s pro clubs don’t allow their women’s sides to use their dressing rooms(even when their not there) at the major stadiums.
Coupled with another disaster that their youth squad got destroyed at the recent u20 Asian qualifiers by scores like 6-0 as well as the terrible Melbourne showing in recent club friendlies vs J/SK squads/my further affirmation that W Sydney is nothing without its two foreign stars(Williams & O’Sullivan)/ 4 major Matildas leaving the W-League this season(Kerr, Foord, Raso, Logarzo)/new report got netball still by far as AUS #1 sport among females.

all are good debating points, unless I got to start a new threat with something like ‘the rise & fall of Aussie woso?

just got this in as well; the AFWL(women's Aussie style football) been reporting crowds of over 20K at their club games, which is significant higher attendance at either the W'League & the Chinese game

You clearly don't know my forum habits well enough. :ROFLMAO: I hate off-topic posts more than just about anything. If I come to the W-League thread, I don't want to be distracted by NT blather.

Anyway, in the other derby this week, City beat the Victory to the tune of 4-0, all but locking up the Premiership for the season. Only one team, SFC, is left that can catch them, and to do so, SFC has to make up a GD of 6 by winning both remaining games while City loses both remaining games.

The other two games this week saw Perth beat Brisbane and my Canberra beat lowly Adelaide, meaning the only shuffling in the table was Perth edging past bye-week Newcastle. Adelaide and Canberra are the only two byes left in the season, in that order. Whatever happens in their game next week, Canberra will miss out on the playoffs for the third season in a row after only missing once in their previous nine years. As a worried fan, I wonder if they've now entirely fallen out of the "upper echelon" of the W-League...

They did that when they lost Yukari Kinga at the end of 2016-2017 season and let her sign for Melbourne City. :p

Some other notes about the playoffs I didn't mention earlier:

--City, as insinuated above, have clinched a home playoff game

--SFC have qualified for the playoffs but haven't clinched a home game yet. They have kept their 100% playoff appearance rate intact yet another year

--The other three teams still in contention are WSW, the Victory, and the Roar. None of those three play each other in the final two weeks, so there are no "six-pointers" available

--WSW versus City and the "Big Blue" SFC versus the Victory *do* happen down the stretch, though, so playoff seeding will still be interesting

--WSW's previous best performance was 6th place in their inaugural season, '12-'13, which is one worse than Adelaide's best, 5th-place in '15-'16. If WCW makes the playoffs this year - which they can guarantee with just 2pts from their last 2g, irrespective of anyone else's finish - then they will leave Adelaide as the only club to never qualify for the playoffs. And if WSW can regain 2nd place from SFC, then they will leave Adelaide as the only club to never have a *home* playoff game. (Everyone else has been in the top 2 at least once.)

The W-League final will be available in the US on ESPN+, which you can apparently get a free trial for. (I outright bought the Disney/Hulu/ESPN three-for-two bundle earlier today myself, what with a few weeks of quarantine looming and ESPN+ having an impressive soccer selection already anyway.)

15' - Sydney have come out strongly with the most possession and pressure, but Melbourne City don't look too worried, only conceding one slight threat from a left-footed shot by Sydney's Remy Siemsen on a cut inside, saved by Lydia Williams.

16' - Goal, Melb City 1-0 - Steph Catley scores with a powerful shot from the left of the box, after a one-two pass with Van Egmont. The finish was mishandled by Bledsoe

City have been soooooo lucky so far this match. First with the bad bounce off of Bledsoe, second with the non-call on what should have been recognized as a handball in the box. Granted, it's been a pretty even match overall, so the scoreline is fairly fair, but Sydney have to be frustrated here.

45' - Melbourne City have controlled more of the play since the goal - Claire Emslie nearly scored by picking up a loose defensive pass (good save by Bledsoe), and Kyah Simon hit the crossbar with a floating cross from the right side.

It'll be a pity if the result is decided by one goalkeeping error.

Sydney are hanging in there and should have had a penalty after 35', when Melbourne captain Catley used her right hand to hit away a high pass in the area, then pretended that the ball had hit her face.

    Second half, we're back.
49' - Latsko almost equalizes for Sydney on a through-ball, only just parried by Williams for Melbourne

60' - A tough and physical second half so far. Simon had a good chance to double Melbourne's lead but didn't hit the target.

75' - still 1-0, Sydney need something more. In an earlier substitution by coach Ante Juric, he decided to replace top scorer Remy Siemsen with Princess Ibini, but the visitors haven't strung together many big attacks recently. Amy Sayer has just come in replacing Natalie Tobin.

For Melb. City, they replaced Yukari Kinga with Milica Mijatović

    It's over, 1-0 - a 4th title for Melbourne City [IMG]

10 minutes from time, Ibini was set up with a decent chance, saved by Williams, but Sydney couldn't get any closer. Near the end, Van Egmond and substitute Watt nearly added a 2nd for City.
