Probably change the colors as well. Yeah love the distinctive crest of the Reign. It was different from every other crest.
There's lots of rebrands that are welcome (Chicago Fire's notably being one that is NOT.). Of course, most rebrands and changes in locales in woso (WNY Flash to NC Courage; FC Kansas City to Utah Reign) have been tied to keeping a team afloat and/or financial issues. So even if you didn't like the change (although I think FCKC to Utah Royals was an upgrade in every way), you had to be happy on some level that the team was still there and players still had jobs. In this case, its a bit different because while majority ownership has changed, the metro area is the same. Thus, this strikes me more as a wealthy club wanting to stamp its brand on something than wanting to improve/remake a team's identity due to a change in location (especially when the crest and identity were already one of the best in the league).
To be entirely fair, there isn't a single crest in MLS or NWSL that I can think of that uses that sort of Euro-traditional heraldic-style art for their crest, (FCCincy comes a little close, but even their lion has been incredibly vectorized and modernized,) so this new one is still really distinctive.
The existing Reign crest/logo is one of the best anywhere! OL appears to be "tone deaf" to the US-American women's soccer culture. Hiring Benstitii without prepping the fan base was a sour note, too. Beyond the Horan story, he's French, and I am thinking there could be an over-arching France-USA culture chasm that can't be closed.
Wow I must have a really unpopular opinion because I did not care for the old crest. Not that I'm in love with the new one but any change for me would have been better. I think for me when I looked at the old crest it did not scream soccer club or even looked sporty. It looks more like a video game character. So I welcome the new redesign.

Please, keep anyway the old crest in your avatar: I did like it a lot instead and this way I'd keep seeing it around somehow!

I think it's nice and I like this new crest ,but , I'm not impartial .I've been carrying "the lion" for so many years in my heart and on my person (smile) sorry
in france tony Parker buy the team Lyon/villeurbanne ( ASVEL) (basket ball) and changed the color and crest and the new crest (ASVEL) is very nice i have a harder time with the fact that a team can change locations in the USA . than I do with the fact that the crest is changed
Updated with the news of Yanez's retirement. She will really be missed. Also Fishlock signed a new 2-year contract. Does she qualify for allocation dollars? Yes. As long as they pay her the $50K max, she's eligible for more from the allocation fund on multiple points. 1 player must otherwise exceed league max 2 cannot be used for (US/Can) federation players 3 one of following: 3 national caps in prior 24 months formerly allocated 5 NWSL seasons NWSL best XI/second XI in last 2 years NWSL award in last 2 years previously had allocation money

So.... Yanez isn't fully retired after all.... Recently retired from the Reign FC in the NWSL, Bev Yanez joins the California Storm! pic.twitter.com/uzyM5uDjBs— California Storm (@CalStormSoccer) March 2, 2020 She joins two ex-Sky Blue players (Kandace Love [nee' Wilson] and Brittany Cameron) in Sac as well
Some chatter on Twitter makes it sound like she'll be playing under amateur status. IDK where she's based officially but she is from CA originally, so maybe she's moving there full-time now? I don't know what she's doing for salary.
- Updates on the roster after the club announced several moves yesterday including the fact that Lydia Williams and Rumi Utsugi were waived. These two have been a big part of the club the last two years and it'll be sad to see them go. I wonder how @blissett feels about this news. - Changed the structure on these a bit as the colors were getting too ridiculous. One thing change the club have done this year which I absolutely love is announcing the length of the new contracts. So I have incorporated it in these updates. If I'm missing any contract announcement please let me know. Goal Keepers (2) Casey Murphy Michelle Betos (2020) Defenders (8) Lauren Barnes (2020) Steph Catley Steph Cox Celia Jiménez Delgado Kristen McNabb Taylor Smith Julia Ashley (2022) Amber Brooks (2022) Midfielders (6) Morgan Andrews Allie Long (FED) Rebecca Quinn Rosie White Jess Fishlock (2021) Dani Weatherholt Forwards (6) Darian Jenkins Megan Rapinoe (FED) Jodie Taylor (2020) Bethany Balcer (2022) Jasmyne Spencer Sofia Huerta (2022) Drafted 9th - Kelcie Hedge - Midfielder 33rd - Sam Hiatt - Defender 34th - Meg Brandt - Midfielder Out Lydia Williams Sammy Jo Prudhomme Scout Watson Jaycie Johnson Theresa Nielsen Christen Westphal Schuyler Debree Megan Oyster Morgan Profitt Bev Yanez Rumi Utsugi Ifeoma Onumonu Shea Groom Addison Steiner
Well, it's sad but quite understandable, since actually Rumi has never been fully healthy and fit in the latest year, to the point that she couldn't help Nadeshiko NT either during the WWC or subsequent tournaments. My feeling is that, if fully fit, Utsugi keeps being an amazing international-caliber player, but she's 31 and I wonder if injuries aren't actually cutting into the final part of her career as it looks like they basically did with Mizuho Sakaguchi (who's just one year older and, although she didn't officially retire yet, never actually got back to her full form after her injuries in 2018). it wasn't just because of the Japanese players in their roster that I was rooting for the Reign, but actually I have to admit that I am more and more cooling about them: there was something special in the atmosphere at the time when Predmore and Harvey had given the feeling of an actual "big family-team" and the way the team was playing in those two years when Kansas City took away the title from them was genuinely exciting. Now, with the change of property, the change of crest, the retirement or leaving of many "iconic" players from that cycle (last one was Beverly Yanez: not sure if she was a fans favorite, but she sure was a favorite of mine), I am afraid that I am no more as invested as I was, let's say, in 2014.
Catley is very likely to sign with Arsenal. Obviously no announcement before the Summer window, but this one should happen.
Bev was absolutely the top of the list of fan favorites. And she loved the fans -- she would sign autographs until there wasn't a single person left. She always took time to chat with me -- sometimes crossing the field when she saw me. She was the best and she will be terribly missed.
I am also finding it very hard. Name and crest changes, long travel to watch in a baseball stadium, the 'family' gone. A few of us were talking the other day about how important Barnes is and that loss was the undercurrent. We still have some great players -- Spencer, Fishlock, Pinoe and some very exciting youngsters in Balcer, Jenkins, Murphy, White, among others. And it's fun during the games, but they are not making it easy to be a fan. Don't flame me -- i know the struggles the club has and i am a SUPPORTER. I'm just saying, it's been a difficult couple of years.
