The timing is likely coincidence more than anything. McBride reports to Earnie, and he's also brand new in the org, so he likely wouldn't have impacted this decision.

If anything, Earnie might have given McBride a heads up before Jay's departure and given him some background on that decision so that it didn't surprise him too much given how new McBride is in his role. But the job for him today is the same as it was when he was hired.

Important caveat... This is all one guy's speculation reading the tea leaves from the outside, but that is how I've seen corporate leadership transitions play out internally.

Yeah, I think it's possible that there was nepotism at work in Berhalter's hire, but it's more plausible that it was Stewart's decision. It seems like Stewart's criteria for a coach were 1) committed to a possession-based style, 2) familiar with the American player pool, 3) fluent in English, and 4) willing to live in Chicago. We fans might disagree with those criteria, but once those criteria are in place, there are not many options other than Berhalter.

Yeah, you don't hire a manager to fire a CFO. I thiink this is much more likely Cordeiro's call.

While this might be true, I still don't buy his vision. What's to say his vision is nothing for than a pipe dream?

Yes, he might want an American coach, but is that the best decision for him or for US soccer? Was Greg the best available candidates at the time of hiring? Were there better candidates with better experiences and higher demonstrated level of successes?

His vision might make some sense, maybe 50 years from now, when every kids in America grows up with a soccer ball on their feet. It is not the case now.

The talents we have, and the athletes we have, is still best for a press and counter attack style of games. Our players pool can hardly execute two successful passes forward, yet you still force them to play out of the back.

This is what I am wondering too.

Was he forced out? Cordeiro straight up tell him you either resign or I'll fire you.

Or did he realized he's no longer the leading candidate for the CEO role and decided to take a gamble to force things. Basically telling Cordeiro, if you don't make me CEO I am leaving.

I guess we need some insiders to leak out behind closed doors details.

No. It is a 100% absolute fact that nepotism was the reason for the hire. Those ridiculously absurd criteria are the proof. That is just a random list of dumb caveats in order to justify the obvious nepotism after the fact.

How do we know? Because after missing out on the World Cup and hiring a GM finally we conducted ABSOLUTELY NO COACHING SEARCH WHATSOEVER.

Jay leaving does not magically erase all the damage that was done.

Gregg was hired by Jay before Earnie was hired. They just didn't want to announce it immediately. So they hired Earnie who was too lazy even to pretend that he is searching for the coach. Then he "hires" Greg, then he gets promoted for being a good figurehead. I really want to know Earnie's responsibilities and salary. Want him out even more of course.

This is like a secret organization. No one knows what these people do over there.

Every organization publishes their leadership team/org, and their roles and responsibilities. No such information is published at US Soccer.

it’s kinda the same thing - when the new person comes in, s/he’s going to hire his/her own team at each spot and it’s extremely unlikely that s/he would keep a contender for the top job in the system. Very bad and unlikely organizational dynamic.

It could be nepotism even if Earnie made the decision.

    True.

He might be familiar with the MLS players, can't say the same for Euro players.

I think the answer is fairly simple. He didn't get the CEO spot and decided to move on. This is fairly typical.

Not sure that it has any near term impact (this WC cycle) on the US Team. Seems to be a positive move.

I know you and I had some good discussion on another thread, but like you I'm positive that the new US Soccer CEO will come from a big sports business. I won't go into the Mark Tatum promotion I did on the other thread, but I do think the CEO will come from one of the following areas.
    • Big US sports organization (NBA and NFL being the two most obvious, but I could see a MLB person because of some of the regionalism we see in soccer.
    • CEO or GM of a major club (Exhibits A and B - Darren Eales and John Thorrington from MLS, but this could also be someone from a big European club).
    • Upper-level executive in a national FA or top-flight European league. Think one of the top lieutenants of the Premier League or Serie A for big European league. If the pick is from a national FA, I'd love to see the pick come from a FA of a smaller European country with great player development. Examples would be the Netherlands, Belgium, or Croatia.

I think an NBA guy would be really great. I don't know Tatum, but if he's as good as you or others talked about in the other thread, I would love it. NBA is a much more international game than NFL, and is one of the better, front foot leagues in the world. The NFL is just reactionary, and resting on their laurels because it's truly America's sport. I'd also prefer someone familiar with the US environment. Would someone from a small Euro country be able to scale up any vision? It seems we've dabbled a bit with bringing people or organizations over to the US that were in charge of the Belgium/Germany rebuild, but never heard anything else about it.

Maybe someone from a different sport would bring some new ideas.

Part of me wants to believe this was Carlos' call...but Idk...the other part of me thinks that - he was told he wasn't being considered for Flynn's position, and with all the crap going on at the Fed - and his dirty laundry coming out (glassdoor)...it was time.

Go on twitter and read those replies to him leaving on the US Soccer page. Unreal.

He has been horrible with the foreign based players outside of the absolutely obvious ones?

Some people are claiming that he is missing some guys from MLS as well.

We have to wait for the insiders to speak out to get the whole truth. It's still too early.

When you get to this level at any sort of organization (sports or not), if the top person tells you that you aren't under consideration for the senior-level position you want, it's generally code for "update your resume".

In this case, it was no secret that Jay wanted the CEO position. It was pretty clear that Dan Flynn handpicked Jay to groom him for succession. If Cordeiro let Jay know that he wasn't going to be the CEO, it was essentially telling him that he was ultimately going to leave. When the new CEO was coming in, he/she would definitely lean toward not retaining the inherited staff at the senior positions.

I'll also be curious to see exactly what the insiders say, but the tea leaves are pretty easy to read here. One way or another, Jay was not going to stay with USSF.

I don't necessarily think so when it comes to US Soccer. In this case, the org structure can support this.

    1) Sporting director reports to CEO and has ultimately responsibility for the results related to what happens on the field.
    2) Sporting director hires the respective NT general managers. That allows for the right relationships to develop. You wouldn't want a MLS veteran to have direct oversight over the USWNT, scouting players, etc.
    3) The CFO, legal counsel, Communications, director, and Business Development/Marketing Director can report directly to the CEO.

The org structure that US Soccer has is good, IMHO. The question still remains whether the right people (i.e. Earnie Stewart) are in those positions. Where Sunil got in big trouble was when he was directly hiring the national team coaches. Cordeiro has led the structure to have soccer people making the sporting/technical decisions.
