I'd put Miazga in that other "x" spot if he wasn't injured

Eh idk how I feel about him and Brooks together. I’d be ok with trying it

Wes-Adams-Holmes should provide enough cover . I’d give it a try but ideally I’d still prefer a quicker more mobile CB paired next to Brooks.

Seeing as I’m going for all Euros:
    CCV, EPB, Richards, Otasowie

Issue is while their mobile, the first 2 are not playing consistently and the last 2 aren’t playing first team ball but are talented youngsters.

Ream could spare Brooks but I wouldn’t play them next to each other.

Actually, Palmer-Brown has gone 90 in 6 out of Wien's last 7 games. He's taken that spot. Austria has a weird 2 month break. And what kind of level it is, I don't know.

Good to know it was a two month break. I saw he was consistent then the games stopped.

Like all similar UEFA leagues, it is very good quality at the top (RB Salzburg is a top 20 team in Europe lately) and probably very poor at the bottom.

The more I watch our players in Europe, the more beneficial it seems to play at the top of a league, rather than the bottom of a top league, at least to start. Possibly, playing at the bottom of a top league is good for defenders for a short while.

IOW, playing for Ajax or RB Salzburg or Celtic is probably better for development than playing for Norwich or Mainz.

Of course, the best is playing for a top team in a top league, like Gio.

So, in both threads there's a lot of talk of other countries (maybe) going after Gio. What would be Gio's feelings? A boy raised in the US, of American parents, and who has played with the US U's all his life?

The inferiority complex nervous nellies sure do like to make everyone else aware of their acute anxieties. "BUT WHAT IF HE DOESN'T LIKE US!!???!!!!!??!!!!!??" Goodness. Grow a spine, people.

Perhaps you meant to quote the post after mine, because I certainly didn't express those sentiments.

Gio was born in England. They could try to poach him too. But it ain't happening.

As for the March friendlies, I'd like to see the young uns get most of the playing time against Wales.

Against Holland, I think we'll start with a more defensive more veteran lineup. And that's fine. But Wales would be a good game to give Gio a start. And I would also give Uly a start against Wales if he gets called up to the senior team in March.

No, not you (I should have clarified).

There will inevitably be a roving mob of chicken littles, but I wasn't referring to your post. My apologies.

I'd gauge to see if Giovanni is intimidated by the move up. If he is not, I start him in both games. If he shows some reticence, I'd give him 65 minutes against Wales and then sub him in at 75' against Holland.

There's an unspoken benefit to having Gio and Pulisic as BVB youth alumni...they get generally the same development training. They should have a natural understanding, positional awareness, and combination play.

I'd put Pulisic wide with Giovanni central. That seems to fit their abilities pretty naturally.

Ideally, Gio and Pulisic develop the kind of understanding where they will interchange constantly so it becomes hard for the other team to read who is doing what.

Actually, the sky really did fall in 2017.

They have not done a whole bunch to negate the skepticism that they are incapable of reinstalling it.

Being born in the UK doesn't make anyone a UK citizen if the parents are not UK citizens. It depends on the immigration status and if either parent has indefinite leave to remain.

Considering that he had to get a Portuguese passport via his grandmother to play for Dortmund I would say he isn't eligible for a UK passport.

Claudio has a Portuguese passport, which I believe would have entitled him to remain in the UK indefinitely. Not sure if that triggers the "indefinite leave to remain" clause.

Favre saying this morning that Reyna could start. I think the exact quote was along the lines of, "Why Not?" He suggested Reyna could start at multiple attacking positions.

It is laughable that people are still wondering whether Reyna should be called to the USMNT. The only valid question really is whether he will start one or both games.

I hear you. One caveat that I’d add though is if I’m Berhalter, I would have a discussion with Favre and Reyna; is March a good time for him to be away from the club?

It’s obvious that I want him to be part of the program. The only thing I caution against is calling in players who went from hardly playing at all to playing a lot very fast, very sudden; unless it’s necessary to do so. Sometimes we need to factor in the stress on the player’s development and gauge if that player could better benefit from a short break.

I think that Dortmund has plenty of good players to give Reyna a rest if they think he needs a break at some time. I don’t think it will be a question of him getting a call, it’s just what team MNT or U23.

Yeah, I'd be interested to see you provide updates on the chicken littles, if and when this does happen.

I'm highly skeptical it will, and not sure if this is in any way close to the Jon Gonzalez situation (or hell, even the Araujo "Egg hasn't called me" situation, either).

But you seem to be sure, so again, I'd be interested in future updates...

There's not much doubt he'll be called in. GB has been mentioning his name for months and he's getting minutes with the first team. He won't likely be released for the U20's or Olympics qualifiers. Whether he'll start for USMNT will depend on how he does.

He's still learning and developing. He may not quite be there (he might be all the way there). I don't know. But I have very little doubt he'll be called in to the sr team at the next opportunity.

The only way he isn't - is if they can get him into the oylympic qualifers

Berhalter has missed calling people in that many would like to see thus far so I guess I understand the doubts, but I would find it astonishing and shocking if he didn't bring in Gio at the first chance he can now that he is getting minutes. Remember, Dest got a couple starts for Ajax and went immediately into the starting lineup. I expect Gio to be called in at the net opportunity and a starting spot would not surprise me at all. He's not much younger than when Pulisic came aboard and was an instant upgrade and his pedigree is every bit as solid.

This also makes me wonder, and I've spoken to this in the past, why national team coaches aren't getting more information than we are? Surely Egg must have gotten legitimate reports from Ajax that they are very happy with Dest, he's looking great, he's in their imminent first team plans, etc...

    Same with Gio.

Goes all the way back to McKennie last Hex. He was on the verge of becoming a 1st team regular with Schalke, but it was like Brucie had the same info we had as fans.

Obviously some development and growth is unexpected, but surely Egg would have known months ago that he was in Dortmund's first team plans. And then, why aren't these guys getting called in faster? I'd rather have a bunch of speculative, Donovan-style callups where we can give these young guys an opportunity, than just deciding to wait until they are first team regulars on a top 10 team in the world.

I'm positive they are getting much more information than we are. We just don't know what that information is and they may well value it differently than we would if we were to get it.
