Well the winter thread is over. Not much action but we were told to expect as much. Hopefully this summer we are a bit more willing to spend so that we can get the roster in good enough shape to get back up into top 4. Only rumors so far... Ornstein claims that our top priority this summer will be a #6
I think it really depends on what the long term formation goals are for Arteta. While I think we need defensively disciplined midfielders I believe we have to at all costs find a strong attacking mid (that can score 5-10 goals a season)and that can create some as well. We need a force in our mid badly. It would change the dynamic of how clubs defend against us drastically.
I'd like to see us run a 4-3-3 with the 3 man MF consisting of a #6 and 2 offensive leaning #8s. Unfortunately I don't think that starting 3 currently exists on our roster. Could see a couple of the youngsters developing into those roles but they aren't there yet.
That said, if you wanna continue running a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 with the 2-1 MF triangle, adding a true 6 to the current MF group to pair with Xhaka/Torreira/Duezy and a #10 in front of them could be very effective.
So are you guys assuming we can offload Ozil this summer? China seems less and less the likely suitor (fiscal prudence, corona virus, etc). I keep thinking he might be a good fit for MLS... but that may all depend on wages, and how "greedy" he and his agent are.
4231 requires 2 elite cms, I would rather have a 433 with goal scoring wingers and a deeper lying striker I love the idea of an attacking 8 with a 6 and a deep passing dm same as Liverpool have done. The issue is finding players to fulfill the roles
I assume nothing. At this point I imagine he will stay, especially considering how much better he has looked under Arteta vs Emery. I have to wonder if he would look even better if he had a stronger MF base behind him and/or better scorers in front of him. Oh well, we will likely never know before his contract expires.
Yeah, if we're stuck with MO on our wage bill, it's hard to imagine bringing in strong AM(s). At least not those which have the pedigree that costs decent money. But maybe KSE will surprise us all! Dream on.
Not sure I believe it but I read a couple days ago that we had a legit offer from someone (don't recall who) to buy Ozil in Jan but Arteta opted to keep him. Same source claimed that we we interested in Dani Olmo (went to Leipzig for 17m) but he wasn't interested as long as Ozil was on the roster (blocking his spot).
That's probably a BS rumor. At least I can only hope it was, because if Arteta or anyone else at the club turned down an offer to take Ozil off our hands and actually pay us some money in the process, then I would be dumbfounded.
Isco is 27 and always struck me as a 12th man. He can put his stamp on a game but he can also be invisible.
Last I heard from folks in DC the only way they can afford Ozil is via a paycut or deferred wages. And that doesn't even take into account a transfer fee. What's the current high end salary in MLS? $9M per year, I think.
To continue this discussion, I feel like Josh's increasing control over Arsenal has resulted in more quizzical transfers. As good as PEA is, it was odd that we bought him. Pepe cost 80m and isn't even a lock to start games. Plus weird loans that cost a ton. It all smells to me that he's being swindled.
How about the 17 year old who is tearing it up at Rennes and Soumare. The pair would probably cost in excess of £100m, but would probably be well worth the money.
Was it koure or something the young lad? I remember hearing there were 3 talented midfielders in league 1 in France of a similar mould
Apparently Brentford tried to buy Folarin Balogun in January. Offered 5 million quid. Ted (who used to work for Brentford) said that was an enormous offer for them, and that it probably meant that Balogun is really good. Should have loaned him out, especially with Mbartinelli getting so much playing time.
I’m referring to Eduardo Camavinga, a quick, ball winning midfielder who has started 21 of Rennes’ 23 league games (they are currently third in the table). He has also shown a good passing range and won’t turn 18 until October. When you watch you tube videos of him, he’s clearly still a teenager and will certainly get stronger. Transfermarkt values him at £30m, but their values are often up to 50% below a players actual transfer fee.
Well the guy at Norwich, guendia is rated very highly and killing it statistically we should be looking as they are going down
I'm not saying a 17 year old kid in the French league couldn't be a magnificent investment. He's 17, so who knows. But your post made me wonder out loud who the last player was from the French league to come to the Premier League and make an immediate impact. As in first year game changer for a team. I can't think of one.
Off the top of my head in the last 18 months, Fabinho was a regular starter for Liverpool before he injured his ankle in November and Tielemans has slotted in seamlessly at Leicester. Guendouzi has flaws like most young players, but he was a regular starter for Arsenal at 19. Before we start debating whether they are game changers, I’d note that defenders and midfielders rarely get labeled as game changers. Kante may have deserved that label when he arrived at Leicester from Ligue 1, but I can’t think of many other defenders or midfielders from any league.that would be labeled game changers in their first season in the Premier League. They may have an immediate impact on their new teams, but the label game changers is generally reserved.for attacking players. That said, It does seem much harder for attacking players to make the transition.
I actually think Kante is a great example. He was absolutely an huge part of why Leicester won the league in his first season in the Premier League.
