The white streaks are, to me at least, essentially a doubling-down by the team on the "can't get enough ink on the brush" design thing already going on in the red flag stripes in the existing logo.

Ok. So we have the football side down, finally, with Arena. Guess the marketing/design part is next. :( Baby steps, right?

It looks like they wanna party like it's 1996. It could be that it was an intentional nod to the 25th anniversary, but nowhere near as drastic. At least they aren't wearing jerseys that are so big, even us fat bastard types can fit into the actual player jerseys.

It could have been worse. A lot worse.

Just looking at the other teams, they all have the 3 stripes on the shoulder. Nothing like having even a tiny bit of imagination, huh?

Don't like the blue with red. At least not that red.

The blue is understated, while the red is loud. They should have gone subtle/subtle or wow/wow, not mix and match.

just curious as to everyone's thoughts on whether they feel Arena did enough this off season? I think this may be the best team we has seen in years but I still think we are week at DM and CB

I tend to agree. There were a lot of positives about this offseason:

    - Getting the roster sorted early. It seems like we were always starting the seasons under Burns with an incomplete roster (empty roster spaces) and an expectation that we'd be adding key players later on in the season.
    - Adding a third DP (something we've never done before).
    - Making the most of free agency. I was really happy to see MLS veterans in Sinovic and Rowe want to come to New England.
    - I feel like we got a steal in Kessler in the draft. Bruce scouted him heavily and has tended to have a good idea for college prospects.

That said, the positions you've highlighted are still an area of weakness. They're particularly concerning given that they form the spine of the team. Maybe we move Diego and other pieces for an MLS veteran DM or CB during the season?

Well, everything is relative, and while we have a few holes to fill, the difference is that there are probably only a couple of pieces needed. Unlike past years when we started the season needing 5-6 starters and by mid-season we had 2.

Maybe an unexpected player will surprise us, maybe a decent player will be surplus and could fetch a hole-plugger in a trade, maybe we'll make a mid-season signing to add someone, as opposed to the New Guy being expected to save the season.

Bottom line, we haven't been in this good shape at the start of the season since the peak of the Nicol era.

But this reminds me of the time I bumped into Sunil Gulati going in to the posh seats at a Revs game in 1997, when he was still the #2 man in the league and in charge of doling out allocated players.

"Hey Sunil, how about giving us another allocation?"
"Another allocation?! You guys are in second place! Why do you need another allocation?"
"Because we want to be in first place!"

I think Arena has more confidence in those positions than we do. I'm guessing he knows he can't upgrade everywhere, and that coaching and tactics will solve a lot of problems.
I also think that a big part of his defensive strategy is to score more goals.

while this may be true it doesn't always work out the way the coach wants. Mancienne is like glass and that is worrisome. the good thing is they have until May 5th to add another player if needed and then there is always the Summer window

I think our defenders are good enough - and we're probably only a 5th CB from having full depth. I think defense is more about building a cohesive unit that reads and plays as one mind - than it is about super-talented bodies. I do believe skilled players are critical, but I think the guys we have (Farrell, Delemea, Mancienne, Kessler, Jones/Sinovic/Buttner, Bye) are good enough - if they play as a unit.

I'm having some faith that Arena, with a full preseason, can get them playing on a significantly higher level than they have been. I also think there is tremendous competition at CB, with 4 competing for 2 spots.
