he'd be an actual target forward and ever since Sabo left it seems we are forbidden to having one of those
You would think that if a strike was imminent that there would have been reports or discussions in the media somewhere. Even with MLS not being up there with the NBA, NFL, and MLB just yet some kind of mention in the media should have been floating around.
Reports say there's progress being made, and no appetite for a strike. I'd characterize it as cautious optimism that could flip on its head still.
there are articles back in late 2019 about it, but nothing of late. However, the last CBA didn't really heat up on possible strike problems until the week or two leading up to the season. The CBA was eventually signed just 2 days from season start, if I remember right.
True. Still I think there would be reports "leaking" out if both sides were far apart and an agreement was in jeopardy. It could still go that route but I share in the cautious optimism of Mr. Smith.
The team meet up with Beltran for STH has been postponed due to some exciting developments - rescheduled for Feb 5th ? Anybody in the know if this implies a major signing?
No such luck @ravi - at least I don't think so. The big reveal of all the new jerseys in the league is 5 February. My guess is we're linking those two events up.
So I got around to actually reading the Athletic's report on Savarino and there's some interesting info there. Apparently we offered him an multi year deal for about $1.5M per season and he turned it down. It went on to mention that Sava's family was unable to get visas to the US so they were unable to visit him and his new child, speculating that this was his motive to go back to South America. Also, we purchased Sava for $2M so I guess we are just breaking even with him until his new club sells him on. Correct me if I'm wrong on that one.
It was recently posted here that MLS gets 1/3 of the $2 Million. So, if we paid $2 Million and MLS didn’t pay 1/3 or more, then we lost. However, what we did is better than Sava leaving as a free-agent at the end of this season.
Unless the rules have changed, when you sell a DP, MLS only takes their 1/3rd cut after the club recoups the entire out of pocket investment. Since we sold for the same amount we paid, we should keep the full $2 million. The MLS cut won't start until it's the 40% sell-on portion. Also, does 40% seem high to anyone else? I can't remember ever seeing a sell-on that high. Maybe I just can't think of any.
That’s good to know. Thank you. So, the google eyes at that 40% clause assume future transactions of high money. We can hope that happens.
I believe I've heard of some arrangements higher, but that's usually when a promising prospect doesn't do well at a club and wants out, so they leave for cheap but then the team gets a cut if they perform very well at the new club and are sold on. If the Savarino family rumor is true, then this sounds like RSL really did him a favor here. Him moving to Europe, or even Argentina, would have been even more difficult for his family.
That Mineiro is coached by the man who gave Sava all of his caps with Venezuela has to be a big plus for him too. It means we essentially didn't shop him but moved him where it would be easiest for his family - which to me suggests we could have done better on the open market.
I truly believe that was the main motivation behind it. Getting the transfer fee helps, a lot, but I believe DLH and company wanted to better his family situation. As much as I criticize him and the FO I have to give them kudos for making this happen.
If that turns out to be the true story, then kudos. But I am still sagging. The team isnt better today than it was a week ago. He won us a lot of games last year and without him I dont think we make the playoffs tbh.
I absolutely agree. As currently constituted, this roster doesn’t make the playoffs. Yet, I value values. I have a great respect for entities, be they individuals, families, corporations, nations, etc...who live up to their stated or implied values and act accordingly...even if I do not support their values. In this case I will gladly accept RSL’s actions in support of Sava and his family. It was the RIGHT thing to do. I acknowledge that from a purely business POV it might not be. BUT, what’s done is done. It’s now up to the FO to make even more lemonade. And, if I may may paraphrase Gandalf without incurring too much wrath, : ‘May they be blessed’.
yeah there are certainly two sides to this that make the move look incredibly valiant and then incredibly dumb. What is not being said here, is that RSL bypassed supposed offers last year from EPL level teams. I'm not saying it would have been right to move Sava then, but it would have certainly been more profitable. However, the family visa issue is obviously not just a recent turn of events, so maybe that is why the club was hesitant to pull the trigger before. At the end of the day, RSL now has a massive hole in it's creative attack. Sava was the go to guy, for better or worse, and demands a starter level replacement. I don't see how Baird can be counted on to be the guy to pick up that role and the club not suffer significantly. Fall has a lot of money at his disposal and the ability to really put his stamp on the team from the go. I'll hold off judgment until the summer window closes, but I am really nervous the club thinks we're just fine with what we have now and we'll be so far behind come July the summer window won't much matter for 2020.
Well OK. Source: Giuseppi Rossi is with RSL at their camp in Phoenix. Sides are discussing a contract. Plan is for him to train with the team when they resume practice tomorrow.Rossi, who turns 33 this weekend, has been without a club since he left Genoa at end of the 2017-18 season.— Sam Stejskal (@samstejskal) January 29, 2020 Rossi turns 33 this weekend, hasn't played competitively in almost 2 years, and has had several serious injuries. I don't totally mind the idea of taking a flyer on him but it would have to be at a pretty low contract.
