As somebody just coming back after some years absence, it seems that there is a pessimistic cloud hanging over the place. I think you may have missed a turnaround tonite.
I don’t know if Luiz knew, but that was clearly his protestation to the ref after. It’s not a huge deal, but I like the double jeopardy rule bc red cards generally ruin a game (not this one) and a penalty+yellow is fair reward/punishment I think. This match was a clear indication that the squad is suffering from performance anxiety. When there is nothing to lose, we play better. But as the first half Leeds, Sheffield, second half united and Chelsea at home show, when expectations shift in our favor we get nervous and cautious. Which is difficult to understand since no one really expects us to finish well in the league so pretty much every game should be a “nothing to lose” situation.
But that's not what dictates whether it was a red or not under the new rule. In fact, last man has never been the rule, it's just that usually "last man" does neatly coincide with DOGSO. Even with Mustafi speeding back to the line, Abraham still has the ball in an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Under the new(ish) double jeopardy rule, if Atwell yesterday had adjudged Luiz as actually trying to play the ball but fouling Abraham, he can issue just a yellow with the PK being awarded.
The problem is with the yellow/red system IMO In rugby, it would be 10 min sin bin plus penalty try IMO that has better incentives If you stop the goal by professional foul, then a goal is awarded against you, and you get 10 mins Red card is too much punishment. But also, why should you be allowed to stop a probable goal, and then get a chance to save it?
xG map for Chelsea - Arsenalsometimes you get to watch a compelling and well-played football match, and sometimes you get to watch something much, much better than that pic.twitter.com/mrU7AEw44G— Caley Graphics (@Caley_graphics) January 21, 2020 Also: Laugh out loud pic.twitter.com/FOvB7Jp2KW— Scott Willis (@scottjwillis) January 21, 2020 Not crazy to suggest that Chelsea could have won 4-0 yesterday.
Yes, it’s way to harsh. I would like to see sending off mean that the player is ejected and can be subbed if there is a remaining sub and reserve losing a man to violent conduct or reckless play. That is, I’d like to see an orange card which means the player can no longer participate in the game and must be subbed off like basketball.
Yeah, if kante doesn’t slip the narrative of this match would be a lot different. It was good to see the players working so hard and capitalizing on their fortune, but if emery was at the helm people would for sure have called us lucky to score those two goals.
Luiz made no attempt at the ball, which had to be the ref’s thinking. I also think he made no attempt at the ball, so I don’t think it was a harsh red. ——— I’d like to give props to Xhaka’s character and attitude since he was stripped. I do not like his game at all, as everyone here knows, but he is showing real steel and leadership lately.
In some ways, but we haven’t underperformed advanced metrics in any significant way. I’d say at best he is two points less than in a perfect world.
We had 6 matches under Arteta and were 1-4-1, 7 point earned out of 18. That is far from decent result wise. The results are indicative of the performances. The only game we played well was the Man U match and of course this Herculean performance at Chelsea. Not his fault he took over a team heading to relegation and who had quit. He has improved us defensively and in overall organization, Morale, effort and fundamentals. This is not his players, many are quite poor and cannot do the things the boss wants. He needs to clear off dead weight get transfers in before we can criticize or compare him to previous managers. 7th-10th is where this team level is so anything in that range would be a relative success.
