87,552 minutes from final whistle in Jacksonville.
27,561 minutes to Kick in Houston.

Not that I'm counting or anything.

That thud you heard this week was Mal Pugh falling from her pedestal.

"Full credit to the players for competing hard during our January camp and for making our final roster decisions difficult,” said Andonovski. “We have a balanced roster with versatile players and of course they have a lot of experience in important games. This is a team that understands that you have to be aggressive and unpredictable in how you create scoring chances but also knows how to be smart on defense at the same time. They are mature and savvy players who can adjust on the fly if needed and of course are highly motivated to earn that berth to the Olympics.”

Eighteen of the 20 players chosen by Andonovski were on the USA’s 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup championship team and 13 players were on the USA’s roster for 2016 Olympic qualifying. Defenders Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O’Hara and Ali Krieger and forwards Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe and Tobin Heath were a part of the team that qualified for the 2012 Olympics. Heath and Lloyd are the only players on the roster who also participated in qualifying for the 2008 Olympics."

"The two players on the roster who were not a part of the 2019 Women’s World Cup Team are forward Lynn Williams, who scored 12 goals in the NWSL last season (second in the NWSL) for the North Carolina Courage and has been playing in on loan in Australia for the Western Sydney Wanderers this off-season, and midfielder Andi Sullivan, who was the first pick in the 2018 NWSL Draft and had an excellent second pro season for the Washington Spirit in 2019."

Why is Casey Short not on the roster? It cannot have anything to do with her actual play on the field, which is light years better than Krieger or Sonnet.

I'm not a great fan of Sonnett's defending but, I suppose, she does play either fullback or center back.

Small roster, just 17 field players, so you need versatility, but pretty conservative choices here. We're not drawing cards but standing pat on a winning hard, planning (I hope) to shuffle and re-deal after the Olympics.

@Crazyhorse may be crazy, but likely not illiterate. The question is not who made the team, but who should have made the team. Andonoski went with safe, experienced choices, but it's nice to see Williams and Sullivan included.

Great question, I'll have to give that some thought. I would like to see, but don't expect to see, a complete reset - a fresh evaluation of the entire pool, with credit given to older players for prior service, but with ample opportunity for new, younger players to break through.

The 2020 Olympic team currently looks a lot like the 2019 World Cup team. But I believe it's certain that the 2023 World Cup team will look quite different from either of the above. This will be the last time in the worldwide spotlight for many U.S. players.

Hard to argue with these choices except for Kreiger from the list of 28. A largely continuity roster except for enforced changes (ie Morgan). I think Sullivan can potentially add a lot, particularly as a late game defensive substitute, and Williams make sense particularly given Morgan's (likely) absence. The question is of course if this amount of continuity is the best choice. But I would pick a win now roster in Vlatko's shoes, too. He didn't win the World Cup, and if the US has a bad Oly I'm not sure his job is safe.

I also have to think that better backup options on the flank (Short, Hinkle) would also provide the flexibility to give Dunn a more attacking role, which I would want as an option in a knockout tournament.

If Vlatko continues with his continuity roster and the U.S. has a bad Olympics, then he will surely be vulnerable to criticism and perhaps his job won't be safe. But imagine if Vlatko made lots of controversial roster changes, dropping big names or greatly reducing their playing time, and the U.S. had a bad Olympics. Then the second-guessing would be off the chart and I believe he'd be gone for sure. So both you and I would basically do what Vlatko appears to be doing: stay with the continuity roster this year and then (I believe) begin making major changes in 2021.

Remember folks that this is the Olympic qualifying roster. It is not necessarily the roster that will actually go to the Olympics once we qualify. The Olympics are a good way off and many things may change and what we see now could be somewhat different come Olympic time.

I would not be surprised if Pugh and/or Short both replaced someone due to ether performance or injury. It also would not surprise me if neither did.

Time can make all the difference.

I suspect most people here realize this is an Olympic qualifying roster and not a set roster for the entire Olympic tournament. But it's still an important statement by the new coach. Yes, there may be changes for the reasons you've said (and if Morgan is ready to play at some point.) But for now Vlatko has publicly said: these are my 20 players. With the implication that they may be his roster right through the Olympics. Surely Mallory Pugh, Morgan Brian, and others are feeling that. They know that at this key moment they aren't viewed as good enough even to be subs on the Olympic team.
