High-ceiling MLS players include Toye, Servania, Busio, Pomykal, Ferreira, and Araujo. It's tough to compare across continents. Davies is the best young player out of North America, but few would've claimed that while he was in MLS.
No, it is part of the job. Your "Some this year, some next year, some never" approach is as egregious as what Berhalter did in 2019. Integrating young players should be an active process, especially given our current situation. Scouting is only part of the equation. It needs to be done to create a "profile" of each of the kids and rank them in terms probability of being ready. You need to call them into camp to see them first hand with the other players to confirm the views from scouting. If done well, they could be through a first pass by the third camp in June. Every young MLS player plus a couple others are in camp now. Another five in march and June should do it. This may seem weird to you as an MLS fan but it happens all the time all over the world with club teams. Young players get invited into preseason and midseason camps as well as train with the first team all the time. An alternative or complimentary approach could be to have concurrent u23 camps. Players could be shuffled back and forth in addition to scrimmages (either MNT vs u23 or mixed sides).
everyone agreed that at this point it’s abundantly clear that duane holmes should’ve been on autocall for the last year?
Except that he always seems to be hurt. This is the only goal he's scored in the 2019/2020 season, mostly because he's just in and out of the lineup with injuries.
really? I recall hearing a lot about how high Davies ceiling was very early on in his career and don’t hear similar chatter on any name in your list. The first name that comes to mind as potentially elite is Efrain but, again, I don’t follow. i will note that the vast preponderance of UCL knockout players get their first major league minutes as a teenager or very close.
You are so full of it. He had one injury from june though August. He was healthy for all games except the gold cup (with caveat that he was just back healthy and may not been at full fitness for september camp). Since back, he has played in all 26 games for almost 2000 mins. The actual reason he doesnt score is that he plays deeper. He is so much better of a player than Roldan. You probably shouldn't have an opinion on this topic because you have no idea what you are talking about. https://www.transfermarkt.us/duane-holmes/leistungsdaten/spieler/257095
Really. That's why I don't compare unless players have been in the same team or league. Not many were claiming Adams had a higher ceiling than McKennie did while the former was in MLS and not playing in the National Team. McKennie had the hype. Once both were in the National Team, Adams was clearly the better performer, imo. But McKennie still had the hype. Perceptions changed once Adams started balling in the B1.
Some of that is cause Adams cleaned up his touch and learned to play at a higher tempo (passing wise). Not all players can make that jump when going from lower levels to higher level. He still needs to get it done week in and week out but he grew a lot in a very important area.
pulisic had made his first team debut (had more than a handful of matches, cl included if im remembering correctly) before his first callup. i didnt make the argument but i assume the point was as a young player is on the cusp of getting first team minutes you dont want to take him away from the team, to risk losing that momentum theyre building.
You are correct about CP. If Reyna debuts with Dortmund and gets called in during the March camp they will be on the same path at a similateams. I dont think being a regular in USMNT camps impacted CP in a negative way. That is a consideration and should defer to the team, but most of the players have been called into u20/23 camps. Reyna was called into the u23s but it was in the off season. I'd think teams would prefer players with full national teams than youth teams. This is just another ridiculous excuse to not call in talented foreign based players to compete these weak MLS players.
Nobody is really arguing for players playing youth games to get called either. It is a strawman at best. The players you might be thinking of: Ledezma, Richards, Mendez, Soto, Gloster all play against adults. Ledezma has never been called to the senior team. Replacement level MLS players, at his position, have. Reyna has played U19 but also now has several friendlies with the first team. Nothing cab happen until March, we will see. If he is still with the U19, then he can wait or go to Olympic qualifying.
In fairness, reports are that Berhalter wanted to call Ledezma into this camp. Seems PSV declined to release him. He was also called into the last two U23 camps. He’s certainly not being ignored. The #USMNT January camp features several young prospects, but one who won't be there is Richie Ledezma. He'll be in Qatar, but with PSV's first team instead of the USMNT (which I'm told did want him for January camp): https://t.co/MeB8CtdZ2r— Ives Galarcep (@SoccerByIves) January 3, 2020
A @joshsargent brace sends us into the lead at the break 👊#werder #SVWH96 pic.twitter.com/VhNfmyf1wI— SV Werder Bremen EN (@werderbremen_en) January 12, 2020 Josh Sargent w/ the brace... guess he’s healthy
There current camp is also a U23 camp. But the point was more that these players are playing against adults. It is either ignorance or willful misinformation to discuss them as youth team players.
His hold up and playing the ball out with a man on his back before the head was also extremely pleasing to see. He starts by taking a turn to get a shot. Realizes he doesn’t have it and gets the ball out to the player to recirculate before pressure collapses around him. That kid has all the tools. The question will be can he harness them and continue to grow
Bofo Saucedo debut for Pumas = Golaaaazooo Bofo Saucedo with a superb goal in his Pumas debut. Glad he’s trying his luck in #LigaMXEng again. He always showed promise at RSL. pic.twitter.com/g1Xgs5L9LF— Joel Soria (@soriajoelfutbol) January 12, 2020
The dilemma for the USMNT is that we have maybe the most talented generation just arriving behild a mid-career generation that is the worst in recent times. So it's hard to tell when to call in the youngsters. And you end up with a lot of journeyman vs. talented teenager debates.
It is a rough situation, but dont see it as a dilemma at all. What do teams do all the time when they find themselves in this situation when they dont have to worry about relegation? They rebuild for the future. We have seen the results/performances of the journeymen. We bombed out of the world cup and looked awful this year. Sandwiched between these two years was look at the potential coming through. They werent always up to the challenge, but at least showed they were close. Instead of building off that, we wasted a good portion of the year on players that will be ultimately pushed aside. We will either go into qualifying with sub par players or a good portion of the roster will lack experience at this level. Meanwhile, better experienced players like Alvarado, Morales, Holmes, etc have been ignored for a good portion of the year. Instead of just selecting the most talented players that will move the program forward, they have been struggling with another false dilemma... how do we get 2/3 of our roster to be from MLS.
A nice summary of what turned out to be a pretty nice week for US Intl's: https://www.transfermarkt.us/giovanni-reyna/profil/spieler/504215 I have seen enough of Holmes over the last two months to think that he certainly deserves a legit look on the USMNT. I have been able to watch 4 full games and some all-touch videos in that time frame and have been impressed with his ability to dribble, pass and tackle. He may be small... but he is surprisingly tough in what is certainly a very rough league. He has been one of the best players on Derby in the limited action that I have witnessed. GB needs to recognize. Not sure he is a starter but you could do a lot worse off the bench. Gio and Sargent were the stars... Although they were playing in friendlies... they both showed fantastic skill. Bremen has been struggling since Osako returned and Sargent went back to the bench. Front 3 should be: Rashica - Sargent - Osako. Back to Gio.... just turned 17 and has been officially transferred to the senior team. I sense a debut within the next several weeks. Just outstanding. Saucedo scores a screamer in his 1st game for Pumas. Great start for this kid. Eager to see how he performs thru May for his new club. Literally can't wait for this weekend... the Bundesliga is back.
Reyna promoted to first team. Hard to believe he just turned 17. https://sbisoccer.com/2020/01/report-reyna-promoted-to-borussia-dortmund-first-team So @glutton4Bolts you have even more to look forward to in Bundesliga which is the league to watch in my opinion. I watched a little EPL with BL off on break and I miss the BL games.
