Ugh that montage where they showed previous cheap-o owners now spending money, like NE, VAN and SKC. Not us though! Almeyda will keep us in it, but the West will be so much more competitive for us than last year if we really just stand pat.

So with this draft, do the players know ahead of time? Or do they just have a stack of scarves sitting in their room, ready to grab the right now?

Edit: Just saw the stack of scarves. Broadcasting this draft must require a huge staff. Isn't there a draft where all the prospective picks are in the same room, or am I imagining that?

I watched briefly and decided it would be more exciting to watch paint dry...

I've got in on background, but we're up. The Youtube comments are pretty funny. "San Jose is irrelevant."

Tanner Beason from Stanford -- left back/center back

Well, that certainly fills a hole. Hope he's ready.

He's a good player, the best we could get at #12. Hopefully he's used to his full potential and encouraged to flourish.

He was the player I was hoping for at #12 in the draft

His bio lists him as a left back!

Does this mean Nick Lima is trade-bait?

Tanner is taller than Lima but not faster, great left foot though.

First round draft picks don't play much in MLS usually but maybe he's and exception. I believe he can play centerback and left back. He's versatile and actually played 4 years of college soccer. Seems like a good fit but who knows. This is a lottery.

Taylor (I believe?) said he started off left and then moved center his last two years.

He's listed as 6'1" and 175, so he's about the same size as Kashia.

Yes! There will always be a few guy who perform well above expectations. I’m hoping that we grab a couple of those, but it’s hard to predict who those players are.

    Go Quakes!!

Thanks. Good to know, and both positions need reinforcements.

I hope Beason can develop and play for us, but who was the last defender that the Quakes drafted that played much? Opera? JJ Koval barely got on the field.

Jeff, I'm not overly worried about that. One of the signal characteristics of the Dom/John era was the utter disinclination to give drafted/young players any sort of meaningful minutes. A lot of potentially useful players withered on the vine during those days. So far, given Almeyda's record, I am less concerned about this. If the player has potential, I think we'll see him get some quality time.

Paul Marie is still in the pipeline. We don’t know yet he’s a bust. He got some sub minutes last season.

Defenders have the highest success rate of college players. Hopefully both of these guys can stick. We were a tad short at defense depth going in to this
