I really feel he has done more for his Real Madrid legacy the past year and a half (post-Ronaldo), than he had in the years before as successful as they were. He was always a good player but the passion he displays now warms my old heart. I’m amazed this is what he is bringing this late in his RM tenure. Never a favorite of mine before but I’m seriously enjoying watching him play for the shirt every week now.

All the veterans who had a hand in the 4CL`s are proper legends of the club and the sport.
He did not need this extra year of servitude to be appreciated.
    10 years - he's a real madrid hero

Yeah, at the end of the day, people will go back to the team that won all those trophies and you can't erase history. Everybody had his moment. Even Lucas Vazquez. Il

Calling Benzema a 'good player' is understatement of 2010s decade lol.

Benzema carrying Real Madrid's offensive is why he has suddenly getting the recognition, not whenever how well he plays lol.

Benzema was always extremely passionate about Real Madrid. He never threatened to join Manchester United or a random club in China to get a salary raise unlike Sergio Ramos. Nor did he complained when fans & media dragged his name for years as a scapegoat whenever the club dropped points.

Benzema is marginalized whenever Real Madrid's 4 Champions League success is discussed. The likes of CR7, Modric, Ramos, Marcelo, Carvajal, Casemiro, Navas, Bale, Kroos etc. gets more credit for an individual stand point.

Winning CLs is a team accomplishment. Even Nacho has 4 CLs as a back-up lol.

I think he already had a couple of really good seasons before this year and the last, like in 11/12 when he displaced Pipita, and in Benitez's season when he started the season targeting 30 goals and I think got there. This season he has shown leadership and character which we have never seen before, absolutely elevated his game. Am glad he is getting the attention he deserves and its such a shame he probably wont get the individual awards he deserves because of his off-field issues (like Suarez, but unlike Suarez he actually seems to be a decent person).

Benzema always had really good seasons, with the exception of 09/10 & 17/18.

He wasn't an undisputed starter in 11/12. He shared playing time with Higuian.

Benitez said Benzema had to score 20+ goals in 15/16.

Which isn't exactly a difficult task as Benzema did that every year bar 09/10.

Other than goalscoring numbers, what part of his game did he actually elevate?

The likes of Luis Suárez, Diego Maradona, Frank Ribery, Eric Cantona, Steven Gerrard, Zinedine Zidane etc. had fair share controversies in their careers and they had absolutely no problem to win individual awards or getting recognition. You don't won accolades whenever you're a decent person or not. It's about what you do on the field that matters.

Benzema needs team accomplishments + great stats to be in serious discussion for winning Ballon d'Ors or other individual numbers. He's already Real Madrid's best player and it's not particularly even close. Only Messi has same level impact for his team as what Benzema does for Real Madrid.

Benzema is doing something a lot of us thought he couldn't do (when he was younger he had the potential, but he didn't fulfill it). He's carrying a team offensively. He always seemed to be more of a decoy than the top dog, but now he's our main guy, and I love it.

I would much rather have a guy like Benzema (unselfish) to be our top dog, then Crisitano ( egotistical and selfish). It's a personal preference and one that has made me fall in love with the team all over again.

That's because Benzema was one of the highest paid players from the start, he was watching Higuain lead the team in scoring from the bench but sitting on about double the wages.

While Ramos was collecting Euro's and World Cup medals Benzema was adding mug shots to his portfolio.

At Real Madrid Ramos fully cemented GOAT level status dragging the team to multiple CL trophies when Benz was dropping goose eggs; eventually on his 4th try Benz finally records a goal off GK mistake/deflection.

I literally say in the part you are quoting, his leadership and drive.
If you've followed him for a long while you would know he was always ostracized unfairly by the French media, even from the very beginning when he was just starting out. Zidane had nowhere near the level of controversy, Gerrard's court case didnt affect his popularity and Cantona and Maradona are constantly being underappreciated since their off the field persona probably overshadows their insane talents. The man had a phenomenal season last year and was only voted 15th best forward by Fifpro.

I'm going to drop a major hot take here, but Cantona isn't all that. Benzema is probably a much better player. The character completely influences the perception of the player.

    Not really close either IMO

Cantona just like another early EPL hero Bergkamp is more a case of what could have been. People are seriously putting those guys on par with Aguero, Henry, RVN, Ronaldo as the best attackers ever to play on the premier league. Like seriously silky touch and all. But someone like Matt Le Tissier is a comparable guy and probably the better player in vacuum than either of them.

I liked Le Tissier didn’t get the recognition he deserved, one of the more skilled players to come out of England, better than Bergkamp ?, I don’t know about that, Cantona had the Manure marketing machine behind him at the time, he was ok but not what they were trying to make him out to be IMO

I haven't seen him play, but his arrival took a good United side to the next level and the Ferguson successes started with him. IIRC he won them their very first PL and they haven't looked back since (until Moyesey at least).
