On this day in 1993, MLS was formed 🇺🇸They've seen some legends of the game 🙌 pic.twitter.com/Mx9WmkQKwY— B/R Football (@brfootball) December 17, 2019 One of these does not belong. (And where is Gerrard?)
Hey look at our awesome pro soccer league in America … proceeds to fill include only foreign MLS players. I get America hasn’t produced a star necessarily on the level of most of these guys, but no Landon? Come on, he’s easily as big a name as Vela.
I took this to mean soccer legends, not necessarily MLS legends. MLS legends would be a very different list, I think. Vela definitely doesn't belong on this one; I'm not sure he should be on the list of MLS legends, either.
So Columbus pays $7mil transfer to pick up a 27yo DP midfielder who averages a goal every 6.6 games and 1 assist every 10 games (not clear what % of these games are starts). The # of goals wouldn’t worry me (he’s a mid, not a forward) but the anemic assist rate suggests they are way overpaying both in $ and in using up a DP slot. “Zelarayan, 27, will join Crew SC as a Designated Player coming off a four-season run with Tigres that saw him score 23 goals and bag 14 assists across all competitions [wiki says 140 appearances] and establish himself as a key contributor for one of North America's most successful clubs. Prior to joining Tigres, Zelarayan played for Argentine side Belgrano where he tallied 10 goals and dished out six assists in 77 appearances.” https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2019...acking-midfielder-lucas-zelarayan-club-record But the real reason COL should be worried: https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2019...ning-columbus-crew-sc-extratime?autoplay=true If Doyle likes him... Edit: Did a bit more research and found that he almost never plays 90 mins these days so that makes his “per game” stats more reasonable. Not lasting 90 min doesn’t make a strong argument for being a DP though.
These guys know how to thread it perfectly. 🎯 pic.twitter.com/1RmUPjFx76— Major League Soccer (@MLS) December 21, 2019 Landon #3 despite being retired half the decade.
Inter Miami to hire Diego Alonso as head coach, announcement expected Monday DECEMBER 28, 2019 12:26 AM https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/...gvlQEcwVcyhdzyMKGHbMfaa_1L_9xFLn5ncPZ9b4FUlp4
I think he's a bog standard La Liga forward that looks awesome against inferior competition. Given how MLS has been pushing LAFC, I think it's clear that they're trying to give Vela a "global legend" rub by including him here. I wonder if that narrative fades with the new expansion teams, or if they see LAFC as finally being the revered glamour club they always wanted the Galaxy to be.
Possible tweaking of DP rule. My head hurts thinking about the arcane MLS rules: https://www.yahoo.com/sports/report-mls-discussing-significant-change-015647675.html
San Carlos’ (NYCFC’s CCL opponent) Sporting Director, Gustavo Pérez, says #NYCFC will play their home CCL match at Red Bull ArenaPérez: “They wanted to avoid playing there because of the rivalry they have with Red Bull, but in the end they had no choice.”https://t.co/gJjdl9sLAc— MLS Buzz (@MLS_Buzz) February 5, 2020 Hahahahahahahahaha.
Mike Magee reveals Chicago's new jersey. Chicago through and through. pic.twitter.com/usQcIHNWV9— Chicago Fire FC (@ChicagoFire) February 6, 2020 I...really wanna pull for Chicago. But...now they're New England with a RSL crest that doesn't match. I dunno. It will take a long time for me to associate that with Chicago. (also, as someone pointed out Magee is in his Galaxy kit in his profile pic. "Chicago through and through" )
I don't feel too bad knowing that Manchester United played their first three European Cup fixtures at Man City's stadium as there were no floodlights at Old Trafford.
The league ought to insist that NYCFC move into Ref Bull Arena until they actually have a stadium of their own. Yankee Stadium is a horrible venue for the game and being a tenant of their rival might actually motivate them to getting something done.
There are examples all over Europe of teams using rivals' stadiums for short periods. And it has nothing to do with the war. United played at Maine Road from 1941 to 1949 after Old Trafford was bombed. That was war related.
So wtf is going on with Nashville? The stadium deal looks like it won't happen due to a mayor preferring nascar to soccer? Is that allowed? Can a mayor decide to just change the venue from a MLS stadium to nascar?

An opinion piece about MLS' expansion and what it means. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/26-teams-counting-mls-become-133509973.html
Congrats to Nashville for creating an exciting opening day experience, with great pregame music and activities, tifos and a very impressive 60k in attendance. You only get one chance at creating a first impression so the opening game day experience is crucial to generating buzz about the team and growing your new fan base. These kind of launches are good news for MLS and it's future growth. https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020/03/01/nashville-sc-put-show-inaugural-mls-match-nissan-stadium
