His defense was always iffy - but that is true of lots of modern fullbacks. He could have been a great attacking fullback, but he just never learned to cross the ball properly.
IMO he was done a great disservice when he was moved to FB. I never saw him as that and always thought his motor and energy was wasted outside of a midfield position.
I wonder how much Zambrotta transitioning to left and then right back influenced this with trainers? It was almost as if because he excelled in both midfield and as a defender, they were hoping the next speed demon with some technique could also make that transition. Or...just no one else to play there. Roma_NY is right though, so many fullbacks are just not defenders anymore. The whole defensive mind set has changed too. No one is making them like they used to. You have to be able to dribble and control the ball over and above smashing someone's legs these days . That's not necessarily a bad thing though, it's just I miss the old day defenders who, no matter what, even the Romario's couldn't get around. On another topic, I noted a few grey's coming in on the beard. Am I getting old? Might be time for it to go. Please don't start calling me Signore. @Falc @falvo
Zambrotta was one of those rare players who could do well on most places on the pitch. He started as a winger and then moved back. Maldini will always be knows as a left back but he filled in for Baresi during the 94 WC when the sweeper had to get knee surgery (then made it back for the final, amazing). What many are not aware is that Maldini is actually right footed. He could have played either side. Germany's Brehme was also a winger who converted to right back. He kept his no. 11. Florenzi plays with a lot of heart. He is a smart player too. Probably what hurts him in defense is his size. Short guys have succeeded at outside back but usually they were somewhat muscular with good speed. As you get pinched in towards the goal, physicality becomes crucial. That is not his forte. P.S. Signore Paolo, I usually trim the white whiskers away although I usually keep my beard closely cropped. Welcome to the vecchietti club. @Calcio Pauly @falvo
Zambrotta was a forward for a period of time in his youth days. So, yes, extraordinary player. Not one you can hope to create just because you have another with speed and some technique, that's for sure.
I started off as a forward. By senior year in high school, I was the sweeper. Kept moving back each season. One benefit for me playing deeper was that I had the whole field in front of me. Made me a better player. I think the same happened to Zambrotta. He never lost his offensive play but was more effective doing it from the back. But he also had a good soccer IQ.

Agreed, he was a Perrotta all rounder but we were so well stacked in midfield. Also in Rudi, we didnt have the manager that used the tactics to utilise him when he was coming through. Football careers can end up with having a lot of luck involved regards right timing. Florenzi just being happy to play for his home town club didnt help his situation either. Then throw in the injuries. Cagliari would be a good move for him.
I am going to respectfully disagree, with a caveat. Florenzi might have made a decent winger or attacking midfielder - but not at a club the standard of Roma. His only position at Roma would have been at rightback. Multiple coaches have thought this and played him there. If was able to cross, he would have been an excellent attacking fullback. But he never learned to cross properly and therefore all he was left with is his poor defense.
He had no space under Rudi to play midfield and given his versatility and attributes he was molded into a spot that had space. Coaches coming in after and continuing to play him there because they dont have the time to start remolding a player. Results need to be now and players already experienced to certain roles are easily available on the market. Zeman got some of the best displays out of him. Perrotta on paper didnt have the ability to be a good player for the size of Roma either but it comes back to having a manager and system to suit the player.
Actually we agree and I should have been more specific. Like @La Magica said, I viewed him as the new Perotta. Definitely not a legit wide player.
Perotta was the most physically gifted player I’ve seen at Roma other than Ninja. Florenzi had the skills of Perotta and the body of a 14 yrs old girl, it was never gonna work out for him more than it did.

Perotta also had game IQ, which Florenzi has very little of. Maybe he could have been worked into a good midfielder but whenever he’s played there he looks like a headless chicken. Florenzi has decent control, a great shot and is quick, everything else is subpar. If he was given a set position earlier it could have been different but with the skill set he’s developed I don’t see him doing too great as anything other than an outside midfielder in a 5/3 at the back formation.
Oooo now we want Nandez? Diawara was a great move provided he continues to show what he's capable of.
As for Florenzi, who cares. Any objective observer can see what's happening. Dude took some pics with a tree trophy, outside of that he's had 2-3 decent performances.
Smalling has been solid, but I'm not gunna lose sleep if he prices himself out our budget next summer. It ain't hard upgrading Fazio.
