Trump treats the military brass the same way that he does the rest of the "deep state" -- with contempt, as flunkies who should do what he wants, just because. I suspect that most of the brass will be quite delighted to see him gone, if they if are nominally Republican.

I have a sneaking suspicion that he's going to ask Dan Snyder to offer him a contract. But you ask "Mike, why would he as Dan to do that?!?!?!?!"

Here's why:

1. If Kaepernick doesn't accept the contract because of what the Team Name represents in racism, the NFL and the Anti-Kneeling crowd get to paint him as a professional victim using his Nike Status to get paid rather than play football, like real patriots do.
   
   
2. If he does accept it, then a certain portion of Natives will drag him and that will impact Nike's N7 lines and possibly get Nike to drop him and make him look like a hypocrite to indigenous communities, which the Anti-Kneeling crowd will drag him for. They will all get their 1/12 Native on and go after him, using Natives as a cudgel against his anti-Racism / anti-Police violence work.

Stephens has always detested Trump. I am surprised he was not in favor of his removal 2 months ago. But I guess his loyalty to Republicanishness overcame his Trump revulsion.

Stephens is the type of person I mean when I praise (relatively speaking) establishment Republicans. You can talk to him. You can't talk to his affinity-voting base, the ones that nod in agreement when Rick Perry says that Trump was sent by God. Say what you want about Bret and his ilk, they gag at such statements as much as we do.
