Something convinced Levy that he'd rather give Jose the money rather than Poch. Poch was revered by fans and even moreso by the media, who could never contain themselves around him. They'd always blow loads about how he's "rebuilt" Spurs. A bold move. Meanwhile, in the five years he rebuilt Spurs, Chelsea have: -won PL twice -FA Cup -League Cup -Europa
Jose is a winner who has won a trophy with a club he's managed over the last 15 years. He is also the reason why Madrid are where they are now. Poch is Dell Harris, Mourinho is Phil Jackson. That success however, comes with a hazard that anyone who has been paying attention since his time at Madrid can see.
Looking at the Spurs team and I just don't see them as a Jose team. Poch had them made to win 3-2 or 4-2, even 4-3. Jose loves his 1-0, built on counter attacking football and solid at the back, big lads in the middle of the pitch. First prediction...Kane to Madrid next Summer.
Madrid have won the CL three times after he left and are currently tied for first in La Liga. Chelsea did OK without him. The script is that he comes in with bluster, maybe wins something, exaggerates it for his own gain, falls out with the club, leaves them with much fanfare, TV pundit.
But look at where Madrid were before him. Their record in the mid to late 00s Their previous managers before him were Pellegrini, Ramos, and Schuster. It's not exactly a dream team They're not making improvements under Ancelotti or Zidane. Chelsea before his 2nd stint we were kind of in the wilderness. I mean, we had to give RDM the job because he won the CL! Mourinho is good at setting teams up, getting them over the line. And I'm not disagreeing. He has a pedigree, but he'll end up fighting everyone because he's a textbook narcissist.

i think i may have to disagree. i certainly don't see his tenure as a long one, but he has what spurs have lacked with Poch, the winning mentality and the ability to give that mentality to his players. Poch, for all his good qualities, lacked in some of the most important, i think Jose makes up some of those deficiencies. the question will be how he gets this team to play and how the players respond to it. there was a lot of talk that the game had tactically passed Jose by, and honestly i think you could see that against the best opposition. but top 4 is certainly in their reach and there were rumors that Jose took some time to really self asses and look at the game and adapt to the last few years of tactical changes. if he figured it out, it could be dangerous. at the end of the day we just don't know, but looking at the last few years of Jose only, compared to his entire career, could be a mistake.

A while back, I saw an article in the Guardian how Mourinho had been using the same assistants while Fergie for instance changed his assistants every now and then. It's telling that Jose hasn't brought back Rui Faria for instance.
He brought a few analysts and scouts; it's hard to find a first rate staff mid-season, but he was able to pry talent away from Lille, who are a point outside a CL spot. I think Jose will bring this team together and start winning some matches. I think, talent-wise, the personnel are better than what he had at United. They should beat West Ham and Olympiacos this coming week.
Rui has managerial commitments in Qatar. If he was free, he might probably have joined him back. But good sign that he might want to change.
