The big thing about FBs is whether the wing player on that side tracks back to help out. Remember, van Bronckhorst was not the greatest defender but always had a bit of help. The big problem with FBs who are too offensively minded is when the ball is turned over and the other team has the ability to counter quickly. Estonia were not the type of team that would create such chances. The holding MF becomes very important here as well as a good one will drop back as the FBs push up to help create a back three (this is what Ajax are doing these days when Tagliafico and Mazraoui/Dest push up hard). the Koeman brothers have some months now to continue to review the possible Euro team sheet and figure out what tactics will work (it will help once the draw is made later this month). It's good that they will have a lot of options.
I know you have a limitless liking for Ake, but there are only three spots to be occupied in that line with superior players in comparison to him, Wijnaldum/Ihattaren/de Jong/vd Beek/Koopmeiners/etc. for that line. So what's the use to bring him up?
Well, that was because of two imbecil coaches, not the players. One of them, Hiddink, so fvcking lazy he thought he could ride on van Gaal's work to qualify, while van Gaal had to put in alot of work to keep that crew in line, and then an inept coach Blind who got caught in the spotlights like a frightened bunny. Dick Advokaat took over just one match too late.
Wijnaldum has turned into a World Class player in my opinion. His work rate is tremendous and his ability to play different roles shows high tactical acumen. Very impressed by his development and quality play
Klopp said a few months ago, when he placed Gino into an unfamiliar spot and was asked about that by the press, that Gini was formed in the Dutch league, so his tactical knowledge is at top level to be able to do well.
We have exhausted commenting on the last two qualifiers so I am locking this thread. There are other threads to comment on the upcoming Euros and players on the NT.
