That was more implied for the Spain game but the Italy officiating was suspect AF also. South Korea was awarded a bullshit PK against Italy which Buffon was able to save... Not calling anything on the South Korean duses who intentionally elbowed Del Piero and the other duse who kicked Maldini in the head... Totti got a bullshit yellow for far less and then another for a dive when a PK should have been given... And I don't even like Italy. I like South Korea way more but they were helped by the refs in two games...
Totti absolutely deserved a booking for his elbow. Probably should have been a red. Same for Vieri's elbow before that. Kim, the player whose nose was bleeding profusely because of Vieri's elbow, is the same one who later elbowed Del Piero. How can you call the penalty call bullshit when there was never good footage of the foul? It looked like there was some contact but it was unclear. There weren't conclusive replays. That game was a clear example of a ref losing control of a match, but there were major bad calls both ways. It's hard to say that Italy got jobbed when they should have been playing shorthanded first.
The Vieri elbow didn't look intentional to me and the South Korean players were surprised when they were awarded the PK. Most of them seemed to think it wasn't a PK...
...and that ref 1) was from Ecuador - who lost to Italy in the group stage, not a disqualifying reason in and of itself, but not a good look - and 2) later got busted for being a drug mule.
It doesn't have to be intentional. If it is reckless, then it is a yellow. If it was with excessive force, then it is a red. Considering he busted up the guy's nose, you can make a clear case for excessive force. The Korean players being surprised is only circumstantial evidence that it was wrong, but by no means conclusive. There could have easily been a shirt tug that the players didn't see because they were tracking the ball, but the ref caught it. That happens all the time. Not saying it did, but we don't know because there wasn't a good replay.
I thought ya'll's were referring to Vieri's blatant elbow on Rafa that should have disqualified him on the spot for the rest of the competition. Dude straight up went for Marquez's trachea.
lol, it's not a court case, breh. Prior to VAR, nothing was conclusive... Circumstantial as it may be, it speaks volumes that people who have played competitive soccer their whole lives and were near the play were surprised it was given because it was the wrong call...
I like a lot of their retired players but not enough to like the NT... Maldini, Pirlo, Totti, Del Piero, De Rossi... Fvck Paolo Di Canio
You're the one acting as if it was conclusive by calling it a bullshit pk. That's a mighty strong claim based on such paltry evidence.
a little late but I second celito as top five foreigners I've seen in Liga mx. obviously tainted a bit because he didnt win a title but in terms of raw talent, he was a spectacle to behold

He was so good that he was a Argie national team regular back when they didn’t really call up players playing in Mexico.
