In all honesty, its not really going to matter much as long as Gregg is the coach. Gregg looks for more long passing and defending, his outside backs do get forward but are used more as an outlet to keep possession. Dest's best attributes is the ability to come into the attack and add to that. His defending will get better but I don't see the instincts on defense I see in his offensive game. Gregg will call him in but he won't be full strength in the system the US is running. So it only makes sense that he goes to a team that will maximize his international exposure. Less flight time, more history, a chance at EUROs, chance of going deeper in the WC. In all honesty, it would be a surprise for him to pick the US, whose only real draw is playing time, but he didn't go a full 90 in either of his appearances.
Dest could be a player for us for a decade, General Egg will be ruining us [surely?] for at most 2 more years. Isn't it more than a mite idiotic of our leadership to prioritize keeping the man who ruins us over genuinely talented young players?........ Yes, this is almost a rhetorical question. Almost all of us, excepting the Berhalter Haupt Kommand, knows just how idiotic this farce of a USMNT has become.
Likely when the team rosters are announced. However, if I was him I’d likely take a little longer. He’s 18. This is a big decision and once it’s made there’s no changing it.
Sergino Dest will announce on Monday whether he will represent the Netherlands or the USA.— Dutch Football 🇳🇱 (@FootballOranje_) October 27, 2019
Why? This is great for us. Him making a decision before it's clear whether or not he's good enough to become a Holland regular is perfect. Sure maybe he still flips tomorrow but him announcing earlier now instead of waiting another 6 months is a good thing for our odds, not sure how anyone would see it otherwise. I'm around 75% sure he stays with us.
Is Dest destined for the USA or Holland? Perhaps if he choose the US it's a slight destain of the program... But it's not like it destroys the program if he stays in Holland... And all this back and forth is a bit destabilizing... It's not like we're destitute, we have Lovitz.
Definitely get the feeling it's the Netherlands. Hope I'm wrong, but everything in me says that. Would've been nice for him to have his run out w/a competent coach instead of the worst USMNT coach in my lifetime, but that's our fed, dumb as ---- till the bitter end, completely incapable of engaging in a legit coaching search in perpetuity.
If his heart was with the USMNT....................he'd have been on our League of Nations squad. His heart is with Holland. And that's not a surprise. He was born and raised there. He was involved with USYNTs because Holland wasn't interested. His head was telling him that he had more of a chance with the USMNT than the Dutch team. But if the Dutch have now convinced him that he has a future with their program.....................then this is over. What I do know is that we gave it what we could. This won't be a Jonathan Gonzalez or Neven Subotic type of situation. We made him an important part of the U17s and U20s. We called him up to the full USMNT as quickly as we could. Very shortly after the U20 World Cup. Before he'd really done much of anything in first team soccer. A couple of appearances. We were aggressive. So if he chooses Holland, c'est la vie. We did what we could.
My only quibble as previously mentioned was/is that the USSF is a total shambles, the coaching situation is dire, and obviously dire, combined w/Couva, the USMNT situation is the worst it's been since 1998, and that didn't show Dest our squad in the best light AT ALL. However, he knows from the U20's how good it can be, and w/the relationships he's built, it's up to him, crappy coaches in the international game don't last more than a couple of years, so I almost agree w/your final sentiment, I just think that when getting his caps with the senior team, literally anytime at all between 1999-2016 would've been better than now. He just happened to get his opportunity during literally the worst period for the USMNT since I started watching in 1990 (and in fairness, I didnt start consistently watching until 1999, I only watched major tournaments, and a couple of qualifiers in '97, it being college days-but I don't think anyone would quibble w/my argument). For him I imagine it comes down to playing for the greatness that has been the Dutch team over the past 45 years or so, and for a team that's culturally his own, or playing with the team that chose him when he was just a little known prospect, and need him a great deal more.
It's being announced on his site behind a paywall and only after 200K have logged in and payed the curtain you look at will be dopped
