Fitting, considering the urban legend that the DCU FO brain trust learned everything it knows by taking sports management classes . . . very zen-like, really.
I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. When I heard the news last night my first thought was something like damn, can't wait to read the Flo thread in the morning, should be buzzing. But it's been tame .... so far anyway It's interesting that it died right before a Flo team plays another Flo team. I'd already selected the game to record on DirectKick, we'll see if anything actually shows up in that slot. Even if they weren't paying the team, I hope they were paying their talent ... Devon's got a new(ish) baby to feed.
FloSports Unveils a Complete Rebrand Across All Sports and Expands Distribution to Android https://t.co/Vyrk9FyeAT— Jason Byrne (@jasonbyrne) October 3, 2019 Thx, Jay!
interesting timing - I'm not giving them clicks, does the story say anything about dumping soccer or no longer showing any teams that plays in a Capitol city But hey, good to hear they have fixed that Android thing they said they'd roll out any day now at the start of the season.
Would love to know the backstory behind the timing. DCU pulled the plug on Flo with one game remaining in the season. Someone was angry.
It wasn't advertised, but the FloSports app has been available via the Amazon app store for a little while.
A couple STM's not renewing would be a drop in the bucket compared to the money FLO was paying DC United ($13M/4). It also wouldn't surprise me if Flo wanted to(or did) change terms since they bought in off the strength of broadcasting Wayne Rooney and the FO told them "you can't fire us because we quit".
I bet that so called $13 M was based on benchmarks that can never be made. It's like when an NFL team announces a 70 M contract over 15 years. You know it's bullshit.
Um, we're all mostly savvy enough to figure this one out without an inside story because we know the players and have experienced, well, the experience. It's about the Benjamins. That is, the Ben Franklins and not the one and only Benny Olsen. Somehow, Flo was stiffing United and the owner pulled out without fear of repercussion. My Sherlock Holmesian best guess is that the root cause of Flo getting blown off is Breach of Contract; to wit, not paying the required dough on time and as specified in the contract. Our team's controlling owner looked over the money situation and, after consultation and due deliberation with his legal counsel of choice, decided to cut United's financial losses without any serious fear of a legal counterclaim.
On second thought, both parties could have just agreed to walk away from what looks like, in hindsight, a failed experiment to build a paywall around D.C. United cablecast games. The income projections probably were way off as relatively few fans wanted to pay for this content and the content provided by Flo was disappointing, if not disastrous, aside from the play-by-play call of Dave Johnson.
I was very happy to have cancelled Flo within 4 minutes of Goff's story being published. Let's hope tomorrow's stream is OK.
The stream was actually really good. I was surprised they could produce at lease SOMETHING worth while. TS.
The quality of the stream was fine, but for some reason, I couldn't get it to cast to my AppleTV except by mirroring my iPad's screen -- it wouldn't just kick the whole thing to the TV. So the picture size was off, as a result, and things were a little small. On the other hand, did I really need to see that result at my TV's full size?
I almost wish FloFc got to stream that last game... It was painful to watch. Had it been on FloFc I wouldn't have put myself through that.
