I keep seeing posts about former Revs players going on to success with other clubs. So, here is the challenge: Make your best XI lineup of players who fit this category: Former Revs players who have won hardware (MLS Cup, Open Cup, or SS) with other MLS teams. I tried to do it just with players who won hardware after leaving the Revs, but couldn't quite do it. I have my best XI already, but I'll let you work on yours for awhile before I share mine.
This team is weak defensively, but I think I did it? Coufal (Man, that's a stretch) Sinovic - Okaroh - Parkhurst - Riley Nguyen - Larentowicz - Andy Wiilliams - Dempsey Noonan - Cristman
Overall, I don't think there have been many. Burns gets (and deserves) criticism for a lot of things - and there are his predecessors as well - but the vast majority of players the Revs let go didn't really accomplish a great deal (ex., Noonan, Wellsey, ...). The Larentowicz's and Parkhursts have mostly been the exceptions. Way back in the day, when the Revs and Metrostars made their big blockbuster trade (IIRC, ~ 6 players involved?), there were some immediate benefits for the Revs, but in the longer run, none of them ended up accounting for a whole lot. Going off pure memory, I'm thinking we got Calichman, Kamler and Diego Serna (although I could be mixing up a few deals). Calichman was someone I liked a lot, but he only had a year or so left; Serna never did as much as hoped; and Kamler played for a while and ended up being the real key acquisition of the group. Feel free to correct, I'm sure I got a few players wrong!
No the big blockbuster trade at the start of the Nicol era was where we gave up Ted Chronopolous, Andy Williams, and Mamadou Diallo and got Brian Kamler, Daniel Hernandez and Diego Serna. At the time of the dispersal draft, I remember thinking I would have taken Serna instead of Diallo because he was always a Rev-killer in Miami Dang, I'm drawing a blank on how we got Calichman... But I remember we traded him and Burns for Mauricio Wright. Callie was a good player for us, but he was past his prime. Good thing we were able to hoodwink San Jose! Speaking of Wright, I remember asking Sunil about possible conflicts of interests when the Krafts took over San Jose. We had just made a trade with them where we sent them Jair for Jeff Baicher. That trade was fairly balanced, even though I didn't like it at the time. He said that the teams were run by totally independent entities, but you'd know something was fishy if we gave up a 3rd round draft pick for Mauricio Wright!
There is no Best XI of any kind for the Revs that should ever feature Scott "SoAwful" Coufal. You'd be better off leaving the GK spot empty in your list - which is OK, because that is pretty much what it was like when Coufal was on the field.
Wow, I bolixed that one. Thanks for the correction. But, yeah, Kamler ended up being the best get IMO (although I always like Dan-YELL). OTOH, it broke my heart to lose Andy Williams - he had an incredible touch on the long pass. Was he even around long enough to know?
Here's the one I came up with yesterday. I'm sure it can be improved upon. GK- Matt Reis (MLS Cup 2002, LAG) D- Seth Sinovic (MLS Cup 2013, SKC) D- Michael Parkhurst (MLS Cup 2018, ATL) D- Francis Okaroh (MLS Cup 1998, CHI) D- Carlos Llamosa (Supporters Shield 2001, MIA) M- Jeff Larentowicz (MLS Cup 2010, COL) M- Lee Nguyen (Supporters Shield 2019, LAFC) M- Benny Feilhaber (MLS Cup 2013, SKC) F- Krisztián Németh (US Open Cup 2015, SKC) F- Clint Dempsey (MLS Cup 2016, SEA) F- Kei Kamara (US Open Cup 2012, SKC)
Ralston won the supports shield with Tampa in 1996, I'd put him in for Nemeth, but that's a solid lineup.
That's why I said it's a stretch. I don't believe any other Revs GK has gone on to win a trophy in MLS as a player though.
The difference in that '97 team between when Zenga was in net vs. Coufal was night and day. I don't think they won a single match while Zenga was out injured.
I guess I misread your post, I thought the point was to find players that won trophies with other clubs after playing for the Revs.
