Although my hands will be full with the Sounders-v-Loons match, I will be rooting hard for the Rapids to make the #1 most historic run to the playoffs ever.
In 2009, when RSL won the MLS Cup, RSL made the playoffs due to KC winning to give us a space at the bottom of the playoff list. From then on, we've always said that we owe KC a fruit basket. I kinda hope you owe KC a fruit basket after DD this year.
Might want to throw some salt over his left shoulder while he's at it, right in the Toast devil's eye.
So with the current seeding we could have LA v. LA and NY v. NY in the Conference semis on Wednesday-Thursday, October 23-24.
If TOR wins hosting CLB and NYR don't win at Montreal, TOR passes NYR. If TOR wins, NYR draws, and DCU loses hosting CIN, TOR and NYR will pass DCU. If TOR and DCU play as well as expected, NYR must win to avoid falling to sixth. If DCU wins, NYR will open away. As has been pointed out, a 6 seed can host a Conference Semifinal if the 7 beats the 2, but a 5 cannot host a Conference Semifinal. LAG can't get worse than the 5. If SEA vs. MIN has a winner and LAG wins at HOU, LAG will pass the loser and move up to 3. If SEA vs. MIN is a draw and LAG wins, LAG will win the wins tiebreaker and move up to 2 with a much worse goal differential than MIN not mattering. MIN is +10, SEA is +2, and LAG is +1. If SEA vs. MIN is a draw, they have the same record and MIN remains ahead on goal differential. SEA and LAG both have a chance to get a 2 with a worse goal differential than CHI, who will be eighth or worse, is +5 and goes to ORL. CHI has 1 away win, which is the fewest, and if they win they will finish tied for the fewest with HOU, who has 2 away wins and ends at home. CHI has a home goal differential 1 better than NYC, and both of them end away.
The sanctity of toast is assured, but the very fact that the Rapids could make the playoffs at this point is...
Probably the kind of guy who'd happily switch allegiances if his favorite USL team gained admission to MLS.
... The Final Update ... Notes The regular season's over and the seeding doesn't matter. Quick Hits One season passes away, and another comes. But the Toast abides forever.
The 2019 Rapids season is the example to point to when people say "the regular season is meaningless" or "early season games don't matter". The Rapids played the last 2/3rds of the season at 1.73 pts/game, better than everyone other than LAFC and NYCFC's season pts/game number. But because of their first third of the season they still missed the playoffs by 6 points.
Regardless of the sport, I hate when people say that games late in the season matter more. Every MLS game of 34, every MLB game of 162, etc. has the same value other than if it matters more because of the opponent.
