I love that his biggest argument against closed leagues is that it helps prevent teams for losing money or going bankrupt. Because bankruptcy and bleeding cash are things to aspire to
Random definition of the day: Paranoia 1: mental illness characterized by systematized delusions of persecution or grandeur usually without hallucinations. Psychotic symptoms and paranoia persisted, and she continued to "find clues" of conspiracy against her. — Helen K. Delichatsios et al.
They are on an unbeaten streak since they started having 36 year old Ribery start. I could swear I heard people saying something bad about some league I've heard of before and teams signing and playing old players. Also: #NISANation? 👀— RayoOKC (@RayoOKC) September 30, 2019
Commisso: pro/rel is "sorely needed in this country" Also Commisso: asking for a court order that would make pro/rel impossible.
This interview is the first I've heard that NPSL was banning professional players. If it's true, BRAVO. Has that news been made public? Commisso doesn't exactly read like a reliable narrator.
Summer league players in the NPSL will also have to be amateur in 2020: https://www.npsl.com/2020-seasons/ NPSL 2020 SUMMER SEASON Sanctioned by USASA Players are amateurs / non-paid Not subject to Professional League Standards Regional seasons with national playoffs Season & playoffs run from May through August Defined internal minimum standards
The NPSL says that this new Spring and Fall extension is not a replacement for the Founders/Members Cup but have avoided talking about it. It seems like that venture is going away.
The Member's Cup is continuing. In surprised you haven't seen all the publicity. 91’ Goal by #9 Jack McInerney, assist by #7 Dembakwi "Boxi" Yomba. As it has for years as an amateur league it seems. But their pro experiment has ended. And best part is it may finally have killed the Cosmos.
I had two nephews playing in the NPSL and the PDL a few years ago. Both leagues aren’t in my opinion better than college ball. The PDL was a little better than the NPSL even though they are both listed as 4tier level. I doubt Rocco Commisso will bring back the Cosmos and will probably end up selling the name. Right now he is being lauded as a hero for signing 36 year old French superstar Franck Ribéry who has been playing above his head at Fiorentina...
It basically IS college ball -- a lot of college players getting in a few games over the summer. But with fewer opportunities to practice together, plus much hotter conditions. When it doesn't pretend it's something it's not, it's just fine and useful.
From Empire of Soccer: In his declaration, Commisso again restated his lack of interest in operating the Cosmos as a D3 team. So once again we see an advocate of pro-rel refusing to contemplate the consequence of rel.
Of course not. Soccer in America, no matter what form it takes, will always be inferior to the eyes of a portion of the US Soccer fanbase and they will find something that isn't like "Eurrope". I mean, we are still hearing about how MLS teams are crap and inferior to leagues like Portugal, Netherlands, and Belgium despite MLS bringing over starters from mid to just below the very top-table teams (and those players not exactly being anything but mid-level talent mostly). Institute pro/rel and it will be the playoffs. Fix that and it will be the schedule. Fix the schedule and we'll have the issue that there is a salary cap. Get rid of the cap and it will be that they don't live in NYC or LA so their team is crap and can't compete for a title so they'll watch one of the 8 teams in Europe that can win the UCL. Basically we won't hear about how inferior American soccer is until a team that gets relegated from MLS consistently could win the FIFA Club World Cup. Then we would hear that isn't a real competition anyway.
