If NYCFC and New England ends in a tie: NYCFC does clinch the east, but doesn't decide all the eastern playoffs spots.
Think LAX will likely just lax now and not break the points record, with the SS already in the bag, nothing much left to play for the rest of the season.
It would be a Decision Day resurrection, helped along by an almost epic collapse by SJE. Praise Be to Toast Jesus.
Actually, technically COL has not been eliminated. So I guess there's still a chance that Toast meets its doom in 2019.
Colorado is in if they beat LAFC and Portland and KC win. Or if they beat LAFC by 2, KC wins, and Portland and San Jose draw. Its not going to happen (the least likely is KC winning) but if you had told me in May the Rapids had a long shot but realistic road to the playoffs on Decision Day I would have said you had spent too much time with Denver's decriminalized mushrooms.
FCD has scored a grand total of one goal in the last four matches, while giving up eight. SKC has a great shot of doing a solid to the Rapids next weekend. And honestly, Colorado probably deserves a playoff spot more than either FCD, San Jose, or Portland, all of whom are determined to see how unconvincingly they can back into the playoffs.
The "Rapidly Toasted" Update Notes The only toasted team that's technically playoff viable is COL. To make the playoffs, COL (away to LAX) needs to win. (Ahahaha!) ... and ... FCD (hosting SKC) needs to lose. ... and ... SJE (away to POR) cannot win. If SJE draws while COL wins (LOL) that would send it to tie-breakers ... which is an outcome I don't really want to contemplate. It would appear that things are looking good for Toast. Quick Hits The WS is decided. The SS is decided. And it remains the Toast Thread's official position that seeding doesn't matter. So the only thing that matters for "Decision Day" is the contest between POR, FCD and SJE (and technically COL) for the final two playoff spots in the WC.
They'll score a goal early, and then give up 2 PKs in stoppage time. I'd add RSL to the list of teams backing into the playoffs, but I guess we clinched. We seem to have been remarkably lucky this year.
The collective garbageness of Portland, Dallas, and San Jose has been significant. Colorado has been better than those three during the last two months.
Having tracked these mid-table contests for years, the "collective garbageness" of the mid-table teams in general is pretty much always the real story of the MLS playoff race. Consequently, MLS regular seasons don't typically build to a triumphant conclusion. They drone on before trailing off in a monotone muddle. That's part of what makes "Decision Day" such a farce. The MLS playoff race is typically nothing more than a bunch of garbage mid-table teams tripping over each other while stumbling back-asswards into the playoffs. This year is no exception.
