Alan shearer should be in the top 10

I'm not an expert of the game (and some things might be hard to model; as well as that some players are more than the sum of their parts and vice versa) but something has gone horribly wrong when the FIFA game rates Maldini his peak at the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and Cruijff... IIRC you made a comment about an 'internet list' too for that recently ("opinions and all, but Maldini his peak isn't better than Cristiano and others" - something like that).

    https://www.futhead.com/icons/

Veron his peak below the one of Scholes is also a hot take. Baresi his prime 3 points higher than Rijkaard? (who played very well as center back at the highest levels too: euro 1988 and 1992, CL 1995)

When factoring in the things you can't (fully) model - or the player should do himself - it perhaps isn't too rubbish. Higher ratings for pace and/or physique can make a difference of a few points. And some players have lower ratings but are more versatile and polyvalent to use.

(saw the game in the weekend at someone else)

I think you can ignore that number.
From what I remember the overall rating is not that important, it's the individual ones.

Top 10 for centre forwards (since 94)
    Most probably

    Ronaldo nazario de lima
    Andriy Shevchenco
    Zlatan Ibrahimovic
    Luis suarez
    Gabriel Batistuta
    Alan shearer
    Samuel etoo
    Ruud Van nistelrooy
    Robert Lewandowski
    Sergio aguero

    Top 10 players (overall)
    No chance

Shearer had practically 0 impact in European club competitions (even when Blackburn and Newcastle qualified)
The difference between him and those below him is effectively 1 great international performance (96 on home soil)

Technically (skill set) he is the weakest but his 260 league goals in England stood the test of time (last 25 years at least)
And not playing for powerhouses goes in his favour no doubt

Before Lionel Messi emerged this guy was the best left footed player of at least the last 25 years
Only one I can think of who can be mentioned in the same breadth is perhaps gheorge Hagi
Nobody else is even remotely comparable
    What an incredibly underrated legend

I'm one of those who feel he was the best player in both 98 and 02 world cups. Still get goosebumps watching him vs Valencia or even vs Real Madrid where he was denied a hat trick for some weird reason.

And boy, could he could create. According to data from Opta between 2006-07 and 2010-11 no one in Europe’s five biggest leagues managed more assists than Fàbregas’s 60 – or created more than his 466 chances. Not Lionel Messi. Not Xavi or Mesut Özil, Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard, although they all made the top 10. Fàbregas also averaged 3.5 chances created for every 90 minutes he played – again better than anyone else in Europe. link

Throw in the intangibles of leadership since a young age, and his overall involvement (both dropping deep to pick up the ball and making the final pass), Fabregas was really wasted at the austerity-era Arsenal.

“When Cesc has the ball, in one second he is the most special player in the world for that ball in behind.” - Pep Guardiola

I’m a Barca fan and to be honest it’s too biased to our players .

Personally I’d have Zidane first then Messi and the genuine Ronaldo in third place ..

Don’t see Xavi being in the top ten or even twenty .. he was great for us but ..

But how can Zidane be above Messi in the past 25 years list, when he isn't above Messi in the all-time list?

I'm pretty happy with Xavi in the top 10, personally. Easily the most dominant CM of this time period.

Is zidane better than Messi because he scored 3 goals in world cup finals?
    Geoff Hurst also scored 3

    Has he more league titles?
    More league MVP awards?
    More champions league titles?
    More CL MVP awards?
    More goals ?
    More assists?
    Was he a better dribbler?
    Better playmaker?
    Free-kick specialist?
    A better disciplinary record?

I'm curious to know what exactly made zidane equal to Messi(Or better?)

I think this is just another one of his redundant claims

Messi scored more goals in 2012 then zidane did in total for real Madrid and juventus

Messi assisted almost as many goals in 2012 as zidane did in his entire real madrid career

Messi 2012 is arguably more statistically and visually impressive then the entire club career of zidane

"Ronaldinho is at the level of the best, perhaps what he lacked was consistency," the Al Sadd manager told Globo Esporte.

"Perhaps he lacked consistency in being at his peak. For me, only Messi is above Ronaldinho because of the consistency of the last few years.

"Messi is the best in history, but Ronaldinho is with the best. The rest follow.

"He [Ronaldinho] is with the best - with Ronaldo, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, that group."

Ronaldinho never gave importance to fame or anything. I saw some recent pictures of him and even in prison he looks happy.

Didier drogba has always been undersold by football purists as a strong sturdy player with great hold up play
Fact is no one talks about how great technically he was (not a speed merchant like etoo but more influential outside of goals)

Or about his high assist totals
This isnt even drogba at his absolute best
That in fact came a season before this when he recorded one of the highest gpg in premier history

This alone puts in the top 15 central defenders of all time IMO

Sergio Ramos has 96 non penalty goals in 891 appearances:
    0.11

Andres iniesta has 78 non penalty goals in 903 appearances
    0.08

Luca modric 84 non pen goals in 791 appearences
    0.10

    Luis figo
127 non penalty goals in 922 appearences
    0.13

    Important to note
Modric scored 32 goals for dynamo Zagreb
Iniesta scored 10 for a japanese team
Figo scored 20 for sporting lisbon
All of sergio ramos goals came in top tier leagues against top tier opponents

We could break this down even further:

Ramos has 8(0 pen) champions league KO goals

Ronaldinho has 6 KO goals in champions league+Copa libertadores

Ramos was doing his job in defence nearly as good as all the top central defenders of his era whilst(simultaneously) scoring more career non penalty goals as iniesta, modric and as much as Luis Figo(in top leagues)
More continental cup KO goals as Ronaldinho(the big game player)

But lets scrap that and compare him to van dijk(2 season wonder previously playing for non champions league teams with no pressure or competition for first team inclusions)

Its laughable when people play it down like its something easy or normal to be a first team player on real Madrid for 15 years
If Ramos was such a detriment and a tactical liability real Madrid would've got rid
Like they did with plenty of players
Raul, Figo and cassilas were Kicked out
There was no gentle push or easing out of the door when it became clear they were past their best

Ramos held it down for 15 years as a first team player for Madrid (and even longer for the NT)

Good 'whoscored ratings' for Southampton by van dijk and koulibaly for Napoli can override it this!!!!!

No one in their right mind would equate these names with Ramos
Even if he is technically deficient as a maldini or scirea there is no doubt in my mind he is as great
    4 champions league/2 EUROs/1 world cup
That trophy cabinet is almost fictional

Ramos will remain in the history of football like all the great central defenders of past eras
