Brummie, we have spoken in the past about my daughter's college choice and now that she is starting her junior year, I can attest to her decision being the right one. Maybe not for what she is learning but rather the connections she is making with alumni and the opportunities she has had for internships and small jobs within the English and Business departments.

I absolutely think college, for those that want a white collar position, is an absolute necessity. I also know that the ones that enter college looking for the keggers would have been better off going to trade school, learning to be a plumber/electrician/tradesmen and drank themselves silly with their savings on the weekends.

I am sorry if this is a little off topic, I was behind about 10 pages when I saw this post and missed what preceded it.

This is 100% true, but exactly what my dad complained about.

The university is basically expected to function as a vocational training ground for corporate land - but that is not the role of Universities which are supposed to focus on research and teaching students how to think.

I know I've argued this here before but the value of college/university isn't just the education. It's also the environment where people are encouraged to debate, a living arrangement that's not quite real life, and most importantly the lifelong personal networks that get made. For a lot of kids, it's the place where they discover who they are.

Until thirty years ago, that's what high schools did. All we've done is moved that experience forward four years.

For those who get away to school, meeting kids from different areas and different backgrounds is a meaningful. When I think back to my undergrad years, perhaps my most memorable lesson was learning about the American Jewish experience -- Ellis Island, the immigrant parents and grandparents who owned candy stores and pharmacies, their kids who went to college and became middle class, their grandkids who made it bigger yet, the ethnic rivalries and diversities of city neighborhoods, and so forth. All new to me, every bit of it, except for snippets that I had picked up in history classes.

Plus, I met a Holocaust survivor, who showed me his tattoo. So Holocaust deniers, go ******** yourself.

The thing is though, getting a college education was always seen as a way to a better life. My great-grandmother kept telling me to go to school because she didn't want me or others in her family wasting their lives in factories. She saw what happened to people who had years of physical labor. Especially before regulations and unions.

And of course, there's this from The Wire.

You know it, I know it, everyone knows it.
But this woman takes one step further.

A former “Apprentice” contestant-turned-Iowa campaign official compared President Donald Trump to Mother Teresa.

Tana Goertz, the key primary state’s Trump Team coordinator, claimed the president had done more for women than possibly anyone else in history than the sainted Calcutta nun, reported CBS News.

He is definitely a mother. Cannonise him, or just shoot him from a cannon.

For a year in college I had holocaust survivors as landlords as we rented the upstairs of the duplex they lived in.
Two main memories, one where I went down to pay the rent when the young grandson said 'put that in your Easter basket' and got a smack from grandma. The second is her asking why our bookshelf had books with Nazi's on the cover. My other two roomies were history majors and they were assigned textbooks for a class. Answering that question while looking at her tattoo will always stay with me.

Not quite. It is way, way worse than either of these things.

It was "get rid of bureaucrats" which Trump is doing very effectively.

Christians and Muslims think they have the greatest words of god and it is their duty to bring those words to other people.

Sure historically that some times means killing off people that initially refuse to hear the word, but hey it was "for their own good".

Christianity mostly went west to the Americas, Islam went East to central Asia and South East Asia.

In Africa, Islam took the north, Christianity took the south, the local religions got fvcked over.

    This. All of it.

That experience you can't get in high school. You should know this.

High schools haven't ever done that. I'd argue that they were never encouraged to debate in any sort of meaningful way, on any meaningful topic, and that situations like Tinker and Kuhlmeier were very much the exception. The living arrangement for high schoolers is very much real life- they're at home, waiting to finish HS and then either complete their education or go into the workforce.

Unless you're talking about private boarding schools... their standard issue keg drainers/rapists have to get on the Supreme Court some kinda way- college and law school is the only realistic path.

Bosh! Donald J. Trump has the best words!

Of course, he is also a great christian (and he is).

    "went west"?
    "went East"?

You have an amazingly rosy picture of the spread of "religion" throughout the world.

"...killing off people" is a bit more realistic.

My career is based on the university system surviving and thriving, so I don't want to take away from these valuable experiences, or @ElJefe 's insight either.

I just think there is a better way to get these experiences and well-rounded education than by foisting $30,000 in debt on them for an education experience that is strained by the pressures of declining government revenue, stagnant faculty sizes, and exploding class sizes.

Trump awarded a Medal of Honor to a former NBA player. Trump? The NBA? All those black guys?

Well, yeah, you know how this one worked. The guy is white (Bob Cousy) and he will "definitely vote for the President in 2020." Of course he is, and of course he will.

Where kids "discovered" their identities and developed their friend networks? Absolutely they did. Yes, they didn't get to meet people from Botswana, Lithuania, Malaysia, and and Uruguay in high school, and that's a fair point. Is that experience worth $30,000? I don't honestly know. For a lot of people currently in universities, much of that isn't accessible to them either.

Not to break away from higher education, but Trump ordering companies around is precisely why conservatives who voted for him can go f*ck themselves.
