How do we expect to compete when L.A is willing to spend 18m on one player?

One of the things I love most about MLS is the fact that we have a lot more parity than other leagues. EPL, maybe 6 can win, La Liga 3, Seria A 1 team, you get the point. How can we, or most teams in the league be expected to compete consistently with teams like Galaxy and FC when they spend so big. The Galaxy already have Zlatan and love him or hate him, the dude can ball. Now they are spending again, 18 million for one player reportedly. Even if the deal falls through, they are still willing to shell out that kind of money.

I fear that we will soon be in an era where there are two or three super teams and everyone else. I know big money players don't always work out, but damn, with the money being thrown around it's a better bet that some of them will.

I hate both LA teams, but if they raise the bar for all the league, and that increases the quality of play, and that increases exposure and attendance, then I’m all for it.

What I can't figure out is LAFC and their massive fan base. Like, where were these people and why do they not support a club that has been successful and in the city since 96? If a new Houston team were to be announced, I certainly wouldn't run over and join them.

It's just weird to me. Although, having lived in L.A I suppose location could be a factor because if you live across town, buddy, you are going to drive for hours in that traffic.

That's it. It's why a city like LA can actually support two teams. Massive population spread out over a massive geographical area. May not be that many miles apart from one another, but having lived there you know what that means in terms of time in traffic.

Lol, you ain't lying! Traffic in L.A is beyond imagination. But still, you are talking 20+ years of soccer, good soccer. I just don't see why a soccer fan wouldn't be a Galaxy fan. Again, there is no way I would support a new Houston team, it would feel so fake. But I guess that is just me, loyal to a fault.

Wtf is it going to take for the Dynamo to raise the bar. Apparently competitiveness isn't a factor. Our roster value is still pre Beckman

I really think new owners is the only way.... I mean, Brener & Co. have been in control for what, 5 seasons now? And the only thing we have to show for it one playoff season and one meaningless Lamar Hunt trophy.

Well, clearly the Dynamo have no intent to compete.

But as long as DPs are limited to 3 then I don't see it as being that big a factor. TFC invests in big DPs as much as any team in the league and have only been really good two years. Some years they have missed the playoffs.

More important to ambition is whether your spending on coaching, infrastructure including academy, spending your GAM/TAM, and spending wisely.

I'm not worried about big name DPs. This is still a team game.

    Narrator: They don't.

Honest answer is you wait. You scour the market for two value buy DP's. Let's call them Manotas and Elis. Then when you have them you build around them with veteran outside backs in DMB and AJDLG, some quality players in Cabezas and Quito, you push your chips all-in with an elite attacking midfielder. You don't sign Tomas Martinez.

How long can you realistically keep players like Elis and Monatas? Or let's just go crazy here and pretend we find the next Pulisnic(spelling?) Europe has no problem with spending and big money here is chump change to them. 18 mil is astonishing for MLS, it doesn't even make the sports page over there.

You can keep Manotas for a longtime because he’s in the niche of really good for MLS, probably not so great elsewhere. He’s getting paid a big salary here and probably has a fee attached for him that no one wants to pay. He also seems to realize he has a good thing going here and is happy to stay.

Elis is a matter of time. More a question of whether we collect a fee or not. That’s fine as long as the team builds for it.

Dallas and RBNY are constantly selling and losing players, but they keep bringing more up. If you have a good academy and a good reputation the success can become self sustaining because players will seek you out as a stepping stone.

Dynamo problem is that the Academy hasn’t produced anyone of note, we have a terrible record of playing academy kid and we have a very short record of helping guys get to Europe (zero in recent history).

If Elis’ transfer gets scuppered that could further tarnish us. Young players and their agents notice teams that make it difficult to move-on.

We already see this with the Academy where we have local players self-selecting to Dallas/non-Dynamo academies because of our lackluster reputation.

You can't now. Windows likely near the end with Elis. So you sell to Europe. I'd sell Manotas too. In theory, Pena is the replacement for Manotas. If he works great, if not that is a huge negative financial hickey on a low budget team and that should probably cost Jordan his job. I assume Small is at RGVFC with the promise that he would be given a shot in MLS. Hopefully one of those two work. You sign the next two players you think fit the Elis profile for a million each and hope that in your two forwards and two MF'ers you hit the next Elis and Manotas. Then build around again and use your funds from the sale of Elis and Manotas to go all-in finally.
