What is the biggest standing end that exists in England in any division at this point in time? I miss standing and i want to go see a game no matter how crappy the football, but I want to stand.
Well you can certainly rule out any Premiership club, plus many of the championships side. You'd have to luck to Division 1 and 2 if you want to get the old terrace feel.
the biggest standing end in England is Wrexham, in ..err.. Wales, but they play in the English league. http://www.bluebirdsonline.com/bluebirdsonline/wrexham2.asp (third picture down has a decent view of it, at the far end) Biggest actually in England is either Chesterfield http://web.ukonline.co.uk/stephen.w2/the ground.html or maybe Peterborough, both ends. http://www.stadionwelt.de/Stadionwe...listen/England/Peterborough/Peterborough.html
not that many. 3000-4000 tops. It actually worked out that it was a lot cheaper to convert terraces to seats than keep them as terracing, so few survive today. They'd have held more like 6000-8000 15 years ago though, before terrace capacities (worked out by a formula of x people per sq metre) were slashed. Also, any club which spends more than 3 seasons in the top 2 divisions has its terraces permanently shut, even if they get relegated. The upshot of that is that every single club that ever had a decent sized terrace was compelled to convert it to seats. Terracing only exists at smaller clubs, few, if any, of whom ever had big terraces anyway. Indeed, of the 184 ends in league football, only 33 are still terraced, and most of those are at small grounds where both ends are terraced. In the past the biggest terraces were at Aston Villa and Wolves, both having ends holding over 30,000. The biggest terrace of all was a side terrace at Charlton, which held something like 45,000.
Can you give me the names of the 33 grounds that are still terraced? I'm doing a paper for school about terracing in football today. If you have any more information it would be greatly appreciated.
The good thing about doing papers on English football in America, is that the teacher then thinks that you know wverything about the topic since it is so obscure in America that they never second guess your paper. My.... erm... friend...... told me this....
If you want to go there, you'd better be quick -- their scumbag chairman's given the club notice to quit the ground next summer.
Terracing in the English leagues Boston, 3 sides Brentford, 2 ends Bristol Rovers, 3 sides Cambridge, 1 end, 1 side Cardiff, 1 side, 1 end partially converted to seats Cheltenham, 3 sides Chester, 3 sides Chesterfield, 3 sides Colchester, 1 side partially terraced Doncaster, standing on all 4 sides (+ some seats) Hartlepool, 1 end, 1 side Kidderminster, 2 ends Macclesfield, 1 end, 1 side Peterborough, 2 ends Rochdale, 1 end Rushden, 1 end Scunthorpe, 1 end Shrewsbury, 3 sides Swansea, 3 sides Torquay, 2 1/2 sides Wrexham, 1 end Wycombe, 1 end Yeovil, 1 end So that's only 23 of the 92 with terracing. pictures of nearly all can found here http://www.stadionwelt.de/Stadionwelt-Stadien-Arenen/Stadionlisten/England/England.html it's in German, but if you only want pictures it doesn't matter
Cardiff at around 22,000, of which about 8000 (possibly less now) is standing. Peterborough & Wrexham hold around 15,000. Swansea a bit less. All the rest are in the 6000-10,0000 bracket.
